Compas : #Cartographie et #Outils_Multisensoriels Pour l’#Accessibilité_Spatiale

Le projet de recherche Compas, porté par le Laboratoire d’Informatique, de Modélisation et d’Optimisation des Systèmes (Unité Mixte de Recherche CNRS/UCA en informatique) se propose d’explorer les possibilités offertes par les sciences et techniques informatique, afin d’améliorer les outils pour l’accessibilité spatiale des personnes en situation de #déficience_visuelle.

La #perception et la compréhension de l’#espace par les personnes déficientes visuelles est en effet souvent un défi. Les professionnels tels que les instructeurs de locomotion ou les adaptateurs-transcripteurs jouent un rôle essentiel dans la construction de cette compréhension. De plus en plus d’outils viennent compléter ces pratiques de transmission. On peut par exemple penser aux #GPS_piétons, qui s’améliorent au gré des avancées techniques et des propositions commerciales des grands acteurs du domaine.

En se plaçant en amont des solutions commerciales émergentes, Compas se propose d’explorer les différents champs des possibles. Depuis 2017, le projet s’est principalement focalisé sur la problématique de l’aide à la conception de #cartes_en_relief. Les prochaines années verront ces premières propositions se consolider, et le champs des techniques s’élargir, avec notamment l’intégration de génération de texte de synthèse pour la description de #carrefours_urbains.

A modern incarnation of the pushpin dental chair is the sleek BrainPort, which sits on a blind person’s tongue and translates information from a wearable digital camera (similar in looks to Cyclops’ visor) into electrical vibrations on the tongue.

With time, users are able to interpret the “bubble-like” patterns as the shape, size, location and motion of objects around them. They get so good that they can navigate through an obstacle course.

“I do not see images as if I were sighted, but if I look at a soccer ball I feel a round solid disk on my tongue,” says one user, “the stimulation…works very much like pixels on a visual screen.”

Samuel Gridley Howe (1801–1876) was the founder and president of the New England Institute (later known as the Perkins Institute) and produced the atlas with the assistance of John C. Cray and Samuel P. Ruggles. Howe was the husband of Julia Ward Howe, the American abolitionist and author of the US Civil War song “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” He was a champion of people with disabilities and believed that blind youth could be taught geography through maps created with his special paper embossing process. In his introduction to the atlas, Howe notes that crude attempts had been made to create maps for the blind, but they used primitive methods of creating relief and required the assistance of a sighted person. He claimed that his new embossing method was superior in all respects. Today, it is difficult to know how successful the atlas was, although there can be little doubt that these maps helped Howe’s blind students visualize geography. We do know that 50 copies were made and five survive today, including one available in the David Rumsey online map collection. The atlas includes 24 state maps with a page of text describing each state and the symbols used on the maps. In our scans, we have lit the maps and text pages from one side to create shadows that reveal the embossing.

Selon des chercheurs de l’Université de Copenhague cités par Science Nordic, 25% des rêves que font les aveugles sont des cauchemars, alors que la moyenne n’est que de 6% de cauchemars pour les personnes qui voient.

Les aveugles de naissance faisaient quatre fois plus de cauchemars que les autres, et leurs mauvais rêves étaient souvent liés aux menaces qu’ils devaient gérer au quotidien, comme avoir peur de se faire écraser par une voiture, de se perdre dans la rue, ou de renverser des objets, relève la BBC.

Les rêves des aveugles de naissance n’avaient aucun contenu visuel, et se définissaient plutôt par des goûts, des sons, des odeurs et des expériences de toucher.

En ce qui concerne les personnes devenues aveugles au cours de leur vie, leur taux de cauchemar était de 7%, très proche de celui des voyants (6%). Selon les chercheurs, cette différence avec les aveugles de naissance pourrait être liée au fait que ces personnes ont déjà vu l’espace dans lequel ils circulent, et qu’ils se sentent donc moins menacés par leur environnement. « Pour cette raison, ils n’ont peut-être pas autant besoin de gérer ces impressions quotidiennes en faisant des cauchemars », explique Amani Meaidi.

L’idée sous-jacente est que les cauchemars permettent de se préparer à affronter des moments difficiles (comme une sorte de répétition générale), notamment en aidant à développer des mécanismes de gestion du stress.

This summer, Bryan Bashin experienced Terminal 2 of the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), a hub he travels through with a fair bit of regularity, in an entirely new way. As he walked, he knew the location of every gate, newsstand, wine bar and iPhone charging station throughout the 640,000-square-foot terminal. “I noticed all these things that I didn’t even know were there,” he explains.

Bashin is blind. As Executive Director and CEO of LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, an organization that aims to make San Francisco more accessible, he had early access to a prototype indoor mapping system developed and deployed in collaboration with the mayor’s office and the Austrian company Indoo.rs.

Shubham Banerjee, a seventh-grade student from Santa Clara, Calif., developed the Braille printer using toy construction Lego pieces. The low-cost invention could be an accessible solution for blind and disadvantaged people across the globe, Banerjee said.
 
The printer, dubbed Braigo (short for Braille with Lego), was created from the Lego Mindstorms EV3 set, which retails for $349. Banerjee also added $5-worth of additional materials, which means the finished product costs about $350. This makes Braigo much more affordable than other Braille printers, which can retail for more than $2,000, according to Banerjee.

Based on Microsoft’s Kinect sensor, the device detects the hand signal and reads the pixels surrounding the user’s outstretched hand to provide an answer. It answers the queries out loud.

(...) In a video, Khambadkar and Folmer demonstrate a few use cases. In one, a woman uses the “color” command to locate a water bottle. She then uses the object distance command to find it with her hand and pick it up.
