In #Lebanon, there are citizens who cannot access their basic right of having healthcare and are being left to die in front of hospital doors. Though this problem has existed for years, the government and hospitals’ administrations are now attempting to attribute it to the influx of Syrian refugees to justify not receiving patients in emergency departments.

PSFK #Future Of #Health Report
In collaboration with Boehringer Ingleheim, PSFK Labs has published their latest Future of Health report. This report examines 13 #trends that fit within four larger themes - Behavioral Nudge, Empowered Patient, Orchestrated Care and Enhanced Treatments - with the goal of highlighting how consumer technologies, data analytics and information systems are changing the way healthcare is delivered both from a patient and physician perspective. To support this vision, PSFK has enclosed best-in-class examples and videos in this Slideshare to show how these ideas are manifesting within the marketplace. We hope that this presentation can elevate your organization’s point of view on the evolving healthcare landscape and inspire you to imagine a future focused on delivering superior care and patient experiences.

"I found people assumed [my dad] was getting VIP treatment or had a fancy private plan. Not at all. He had the plain vanilla French government healthcare.
I had read many articles about the French healthcare system during the long public debate over Obamacare. But I still I hadn’t understood fully, until I read this interview in the New York Times, that the French system is basically like an expanded Medicaid. Pretty much everyone has insurance and the French get better primary care and more choice of doctors than we do. It also turns out, as has been much commented on, that despite all this great treatment, the French spend far less on healthcare than Americans.
In 2011, France’s expenditure on health per capita was $4,086, compared to $8,608 in the United States, according to the World Health Organization. Spending as a percentage of gross domestic product was 11.6 percent in France while in the United States it was a far higher 17.9 percent"

Out of the following countries; Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Sweden, UK, and the USA, the US has the highest per capita expenditure on healthcare, the highest percent of GDP spent on healthcare, and the highest percent of of government revenue spent on health care whilst having the lowest percent of costs paid by the government, the lowest life expectancy, the highest infant mortality rate, and the highest mortality amenable to healthcare.

The concept of ’silver surfers’ is a little outdated these days. Ten years ago, the idea of elderly people surfing the web was vaguely comical, whereas recent data from the Office of National Statistics shows that internet use more than tripled for those 65 and older between 2006 to 2013.
With a growing number of tech-savvy senior citizens, the demand for digital health services is also growing. According to new research by Accenture, 27 per cent of senior citizens in England are self-tracking some aspect of their health, such as health indicators (18 per cent), weight and blood pressure, or information pertaining to their health history (11 per cent).

Concussions may lead to Alzheimer’s plaque buildup for some - CBS News
▻http://www.cbsnews.com/news/concussions-may-lead-to-alzheimers-plaque-buildup-for-some
Concussions have already been linked to the Alzheimer’s-like degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in athletes and military members who have experienced repeated head blows and traumatic brain injuries.
Now, a new study links concussions to Alzheimer’s disease itself.
Mayo Clinic researchers gave brain scans to 141 Minnesotans who had been experiencing memory problems, and found those who had suffered a brain injury that caused them to black-out had more amyloid plaques in their brain than those who hadn’t.
Amyloid plaque is the telltale sign of Alzheimer’s disease, formed by pieces of a sticky protein that break off in the brain and clump together. Some clumps may form in brain regions involved in learning, memory and thinking, the Alzheimer’s Association explains. More plaques form as the disease progresses.
Researchers gave brain scans to 448 people without any memory or cognitive problems, and 141 people who had mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition characterized by declines in memory and thinking skills that aren’t caused by aging. They were also asked whether they had ever experienced a brain injury that caused them to lose consciousness. People with MCI are at a heightened risk of developing Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia, but not everyone with the condition will get worse.......

Scientists discover chemical modification in human malaria parasite DNA
▻http://phys.org/news/2013-12-scientists-chemical-modification-human-malaria.html
Say “malaria” and most people think “mosquito,” but the buzzing, biting insect is merely the messenger, delivering the Plasmodium parasites that sickened more than 200 million people globally in 2010 and killed about 660,000. Worse, the parasite is showing resistance to artemisinin, the most effective drug for treating infected people.
Now University of California, Riverside researchers who are trying to understand the biology of the parasite have discovered a potential weakness—low levels of DNA methylation in Plasmodium’s genome “that may be critical to the survival of the parasite,” said Karine Le Roch, an associate professor of cell biology, who led the research.
DNA methylation is a biochemical process involving the modification of DNA that plays an important role in development and disease.
A paper about the findings of Le Roch and her team, titled “Genome-wide Mapping of the DNA Methylation in the Human Malaria Parasite,” appears in the December issue of the journal Cell Host & Microbe.
DNA methylation is a big deal in humans; it is so essential for normal development that abnormal DNA methylation patterns have been linked with many diseases, including cancers and neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Until now, the existence of DNA methylation in the Plasmodium parasite was disputable, Le Roch said. There were published contradicting studies that used old technology to search for methylation, but Le Roch’s team was able to confirm low levels of methylation using classical molecular approaches as well as new sequencing technology.

Let me be clear, because some responses suggest I was not in my recent column for the International New York Times: from just about every assessment, the City of Cape Town and the #Western_Cape are consistently rated among the top performing South African metros and provinces respectively in terms of governance and levels of service delivery. That said, if the Democratic Alliance [which governs the city] had its way, this should be the only basis by which the metro and province it governs are to be assessed: relative to other metros and provinces. If the African National Congress had its way, Cape Town and the Western Cape are to be assessed independently, with no reference to the other metros and provinces the ANC itself (...)

Low fat diet under two years old leads to greater degrees of adiposity in adulthood:
▻http://www.nature.com/ijo/journal/v37/n8/full/ijo2012185a.html #health #food
“This paper describes a negative correlation of fat intake in children at 10 months and two years of age with body weight, body fat, and serum leptin at age 20. The practice of giving children a low fat diet, particularly those under the age of two, is postulated by the authors to produce epigenetic changes leading to greater degrees of adiposity in adulthood. Many governmental dietary guidelines recommend full fat milk under age two, but this is ignored by up to two-thirds of parents”
And by the way, the worst nutritional poison for children remains refined sugars.
Photographic series show what 200 calories looks like as different foods
▻http://www.artfido.com/blog/photographic-series-showing-what-200-calories-looks-like-in-different-foods
This article deals with Calories only. Don’t forget that there are other considerations when choosing which foods to eat, such as nutritive value and diversity of your food choices.
The main death reason in Latvia are heart and blood vessels’ diseases
In 55% of cases the cause of death in Latvia are heart and blood vessel’s diseases. Today, July 15, in cabinet committee government will discuss plan for 2013-2015 about health improvement regarding these diseases.
Level of cases when this has been cause of death is two times higher than average in EU. Average in EU is 222, while in Latvia it is 478, but in Lithuania - 495. Government will discuss also issues regarding smoking as this is one of the reasons for heart diseases.

Télémédecine : l’avenir de la santé ?
Lien vers l’article : ►http://france.euroclinix.net/blog/euroClinix-actu/telemedecine.avenirsante.html
