C’est une évidence : moins il y aura de pays détenant la bombe nucléaire, mieux le #Monde se portera. Si l’accord entre l’Iran et le reste du monde sur son développement nucléaire peut enrayer son accès à la bombe, tant mieux. Iran and six world powers held more “useful” talks on Tehran’s nuclear program, the European Union announced on Wednesday, as a Western diplomat said they are still struggling to overcome deep disagreements on the future of Iranian atomic capabilities. The remarks came after two days of expert-level talks in New York between Iran and the United States, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia on a long-term accord that would end a decade-old dispute over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions by a self-imposed July 20 deadline. read more

A team of IAEA experts is expected to visit two of Iran’s nuclear sites within the next week, as part of a monitoring process agreed with the UN agency. Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported Tuesday that inspectors would travel to the Ardakan yellow-cake production plant and the Saghand uranium mine, located close together around 450 kilometers from Tehran. Visiting the two sites “is the main purpose of this trip,” Behrouz Kamalvandi, a spokesman for Iran’s atomic energy organisation, told IRNA. read more

Iran’s promise to clarify its use of detonators marks only an initial step by Tehran to address long-standing allegations of past #nuclear weapons research, the UN atomic watchdog said Monday. However, Iran’s deputy foreign minister said in a statement that the country’s ballistic missile program will not be discussed in nuclear negotiations with world powers. “This is the first step that is taking place now,” (...)

The UN atomic agency hopes to persuade Iran to finally start addressing long-held suspicions that it may have researched how to build atomic bombs. Tehran has rejected the accusations of weaponization-related work as baseless and said it will cooperate with the IAEA to clear up any “ambiguities.” read more

World powers and Iran are due to start implementing a landmark deal on Monday curbing Tehran’s nuclear program, amid hopes that it will pave the way for a broad settlement of a decade-old standoff and ease fears of a new Middle East war. If, as expected, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog confirms in the morning that Iran is meeting its end of the agreement, the European Union and the United States will later in the day suspend some economic sanctions in return. read more

The recent high-drama #nuclear negotiations in #Geneva were riveting, to be sure. Old foes shuttled between conference rooms, chatted amiably in corridors, colluded to guard the sensitive details of their discussions from an eager global media. Every utterance from officials, every smile, grimace and gesture made its way onto the twitter feeds of foreign policy wonks and commentators, mostly frustrated by the lack of substance to report.
