Jewish author here, and for years I’ve used my social media to teach folks about the history of “antisemitism,” but I will not be using that term anymore. And to fully explain why, we need to get clear on the history of the word. 1/🧵
Jews facing hate and violence in Europe is as old as the Roman adoption of Christianity, but the term “antisemitism is far more recent. It was first popularized in the 1860’s by #Wilhelm_Marr, the original redpilled, alt-right racistbro. 2/🧵
In his youth, he fought for minority rights. But after life kicked him in the teeth a bit—a failed revolution, a failed business in Costa Rica, two divorces, one from a Jewish woman, and another Jewish wife who died on him, he decides his WHOLE THING is going to be hating J’s. 3/
At the time, regular-ol’ J Hate was called just that—“#Judenhass.” Wilhelm Marr turned this hate into politics. In 1871, German Jews were legally emancipated. And In 1879 Wilhelm Marr establishes the “League of #Antisemites,” whose main goal was reversing Jewish emancipation. 4/
Always has to be a backlash to anti-racist progress, doesn’t there? Same shit as Neo-NZ’s rebranding themselves as “alt right” following the Obama presidency. Marr coined a new term to legitimize an old hate, establishing the political framework that would become the N-Z party.5/
The “Semite” in anti-semitism came from 18th c. linguistics, which divided languages with so-called “Aryan” roots from those with “Semitic” roots such as Hebrew. Proof, according to galaxy-brained racial scientists, that Jews and Christian Germans were different races. 6/
–Pause to remember that #race science is not real, & race is always a social construct-
Now, traditionally us J’s had been hated since the middle ages because Christians thought we were 🧙♂️’s who worshipped the 👿and drank 🩸, and if we’d just convert to Christianity, fine! 7/
But self-proclaimed Antisemites were modern, secular men, who hated us because of “science.” This meant no matter what Jews did, how much we assimilated, secularized, or even converted, we would always be a threat to Germany. Because our “badness” was racial, was in our blood. 8/
In the early twentieth century, Jewish writers such as #Lucien_Wolf, were careful to distinguish between this new antisemitism thing happening in German versus “traditional” J-Hate in Russia, which was that old superstition that was sure to die out in the modern world. 9/
In the 1880’s Zionism starts gaining popularity alongside “antisemitism.” Wolf was fiercely antizionist, because he saw Z’a enacting all the antisemites’ worst fantasies. Antisemites claimed Jews could never be truly German and…Zionist Jews were saying the same thing. 10/
Wolf fought for minority rights at the Paris Peace Conference after World War I and secured the “minority treaties” from the League of Nations, which were SUPPOSED to protect Jews and other ethnic and religious minorities across Europe. But that…obviously did not work out. 11/
Because following WWI, half of Europe is desperately impoverished, and desperately impoverished people are easy to manipulate into hateful mobs, and self-proclaimed “antisemitic” politicians took full advantage of that to get elected. 12/
So there’s this explosion of anti-Jewish hate, violence, and discriminatory laws, and by the 1930’s, Wolf and other Jewish writers have dropped this distinction between “Judenhass,” and “antisemitism," and the terms are used synonymously. 13/
But the word transforms again with the violent, colonial creation of the state of Israel in 1948. Because Zionists, at this point, start claiming that any criticism of their Jewish state, is antisemitism. (A conflation that’s always been contested by antizionist Jews). 14/
In “In the article “Towards a History of the Term Antisemitism,” (free to read!) David Feldman sums up the absurdity of this conflation. “the creation of the state of Israel transformed the relationship of Jews to state power” and to minorities. 15/
Jews in 1930s Germany had far more in common with Palestinians today than w/Israeli Jews, in terms of oppression.
Because antisemitism in Germany THEN was white supremacy. And anti-Palestinian hate NOW is white supremacy. All that’s changed is who gets to define whiteness. 16/
So when the US Congress says, “anti-zionism is antisemitism,” that’s like saying a thing is its opposite. It’s as absurd as saying, “anti-racism is racism.” Now I don’t think we should let Congress decide…much of anything, including the meanings of words... 17/
But the term is also confusing. Every time I use it lately, I get a flood of comments saying, “Arabs are semites too, so being anti-Palestinian IS anti-semitic.” And I used to respond, well, words don’t always mean exactly the sum of their parts... 18/
Antisemitism was coined to mean J-hate, and has always been used to mean J-hate. And besides the whole category of “semite” is this relic of bogus race science. But regardless, Palestinians and Arabs more broadly feel erased by the term, and we should take that seriously. 19/
More and more, I don’t see the point in “fighting” for this term that was coined by H*tler’s idol, is based on 18th-century race science, and that Zionists use so often, in such fatuous, bad-faith, obfuscating ways that I’m starting to flinch at the sound of it. 20/
So I’m going back to the OG term “Judenhass,” specifically, I’m gonna say “anti-Jewish hate.” That’s actually one syllable fewer than antisemitism. And it’s clearer, and doesn’t carry all this racist baggage. 21/
And I’m also fundraising this week for a family in Gaza. If you appreciated/ learned something from this thread, please donate what you can spare to Alaa, who’s 8 months pregnant. She needs to evacuate so she can deliver her baby in a hospital. 22/

Why did Russia vote against Gaza ceasefire resolution at UN ?

The UN Security Council failed to pass a US-proposed motion for a six week truce in Gaza, after China and Russia vetoed.
Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, called on members not to vote in favour of the resolution.
He said it was “exceedingly politicised” and contained an effective green light for Israel to mount a military operation in the southern city of Rafah. The city is currently home to over 1 million displaced Palestinians, living in tents and makeshift homes.
“This would free the hands of Israel and it would result in all of Gaza and its entire population, having to face destruction, devastation, or expulsion,” Nebenzia said.
He added that a number of non-permanent members of the Security Council had drafted an alternate resolution, which he called a balanced document.
Nebenzia said there was no reason for members not to support the alternative resolution.
US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “The vast majority of this council voted in favor of this resolution, but unfortunately Russia and China decided to exercise its veto.”
Before the vote, she said it would be a “historic mistake” for the resolution not to be adopted.

If a Saudi, Egyptian or Lebanese newspaper ran an article saying there are no innocent Jews in Israel, all hell would break loose. Every Muslim interviewee anywhere, forever, would be required to condemn these remark and distance themselves for it.
They would be asked to understand the distress of Jews and Israel; they would be asked if they understand why it needs to defend itself like it doe, namely killing tens or hundreds of thousands of Arabs.
Netanyahu would dig up from their graves a thousand imaginary Arab-Jewish personal ancestors lynched by mufti this and imam that (and everybody in western media would uphold this farce as fact).
If a Palestinian, in any diaspora, or anyone of a Muslim background, suggested anything like it - there are no innocent Jews - they would be sacked, denounced and arrested the same day.
But Jewish people have been given a license to openly call for the extermination of Palestinians, and some are happy to use it, to the horror of many other Jews (myself included) and much of humanity.
Much can and should be said about why this license is given, and the fundamentally sick and rotten sense of morality among colonizing powers.
But I will just say this, as clearly as I can: people who call for the annihilation and extermination of collectives don’t do it because they excel at being Jewish. They do it because they are an utter, complete and abysmal failure as human beings.
–
And the fact that the next time a holocaust was promoted in German was done by Jews, in the name of Judaism - that’s enough of a lesson in how ironic history can be, and how morally bankrupt people get when showered with excessive privilege.

I’m not bothered that Biden reiterated that he is a Zionist & is committed to Israel’s security. The problem is that he allies with right-wing Zionists and that he defines Israel’s security as the right to bomb civilian targets and invade, occupy, & colonize their Arab neighbors.

For Oren Yiftachel, the notion of ethnocracy suggests a political regime that facilitates expansion and control by a dominant ethnicity in contested lands. It is neither democratic nor authoritarian, with rights and capabilities depending primarily on ethnic origin and geographic location. In Ethnocracy: Land and Identity Politics in Israel/Palestine, he presents a new critical theory and comparative framework to account for the political geography of ethnocratic societies.
According to Yiftachel, the primary manifestation of ethnocracy in Israel/Palestine has been a concerted strategy by the state of “Judaization.” Yiftachel’s book argues that ethnic relations—both between Jews and Palestinians, and among ethno-classes within each nation—have been shaped by the diverse aspects of the Judaization project and by resistance to that dynamic. Special place is devoted to the analysis of ethnically mixed cities and to the impact of Jewish immigration and settlement on collective identities.
Tracing the dynamics of territorial and ethnic conflicts between Jews and Palestinians, Yiftachel examines the consequences of settlement, land, development, and planning policies. He assesses Israel’s recent partial liberalization and the emergence of what he deems a “creeping apartheid” whereby increasingly impregnable ethnic, geographic, and economic barriers develop between groups vying for recognition, power, and resources. The book ends with an exploration of future scenarios, including the introduction of new agendas, such as binationalism and multiculturalism.
Oren Yiftachel is Professor of Geography and Urban Studies at Ben-Gurion University in Israel.
▻http://www.laviedesidees.fr/Aux-origines-du-roman-national.html

Avoid saying “Zionist” or “Zionism” when discussing contemporary Israel/Palestine. The terms are too loaded now, too coarse and broad in their application, and too often used by hardcore antisemites to mean simply Jews.
Benjamin Netanyahu is a Zionist, but so are Israeli lawyers and peace activists fighting to achieve justice for Palestinians. You cannot lump them all together. Fair enough when talking historically, as long as you’re informed and precise, but for the present day, I recommend using specific terms instead, such as “the Israeli government” or “Netanyahu”.
Misled again by the arbiters of anti-semitism
▻https://www.jonathan-cook.net/blog/2019-05-11/misled-again-by-the-arbiters-of-anti-semitism
Schneider has lost no time in revealing the nub of the problem with his guide. He is a liberal Zionist, and understandably he feels uncomfortable being lumped in with Netanyahu. But the primary goal of Palestinians and their supporters isn’t to make Schneider or other liberal Zionists feel comfortable with their political views or to comply with their demand that “legitimate” criticism of Israel be restricted to Netanyahu.
Yes, some anti-semites may use “Zionist” as code for “Jew”. But Schneider is demanding his cake and eating it in insisting that the core ideology driving Israeli policy towards the Palestinians for more than seven decades be declared largely unmentionable.
Zionism wasn’t just a historical prelude to Israel’s creation, some anachronism to be deposited in a museum. All the major political parties in Israel still firmly define themselves as Zionist. It is at the core of their political programmes, meaning that they share much common ground. The parties are often divided chiefly about how to achieve their political goals, not what those goals are.
[...]
So, in other words, there is no way to understand or critique Israel’s political system, or the nature of its abuses of Palestinians, or the ideology espoused by its supporters abroad, without analysing Zionism and its aims.
Schneider’s formula makes as much sense as demanding back in the 1980s that “legitimate criticism” of South Africa not address the country’s overarching apartheid ideology but be reserved specifically for P W Botha and his government. Following Schneider’s advice would make useful, reasoned criticism of Israel impossible.

“Thus says the Lord, ’I will return to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth,’” Netanyahu said in conclusion, quoting a verse from the Book of Zekhariah, which some Christian denominations interpret as a reference to Jesus. Netanyahu spiced up his speech with own Shehecheyanu, a Jewish prayer to celebrate special occasions.
Right after Netanyahu, evangelical pastor John Hagee urged the audience: "Can we all shout Hallelujah?" The songs “God Will Grant Strength to His People,” ("with the help of God," added singer Hagit Yaso) and “Peace Will Come to Us” were the artistic segment that followed.
In complete contrast to those sentiments, demonstrations and arrests outside the compound could be learned of with the help of push notifications on smartphones. At the ceremony, only the speakers, the music, the applause and, on occasion, the chirping of birds was heard.

"ZOA’s own experience and analysis of Breitbart articles confirms Mr. Bannon’s and Breitbart’s friendship and fair-mindedness towards Israel and the Jewish people,” the organization said in a statement. "To accuse Mr. Bannon and Breitbart of anti-Semitism is Orwellian. In fact, Breitbart bravely fights against anti-Semitism.” The organization added that it “welcomes” Bannon’s appointment and wishes him success.
Bannon also received strong backing from Caroline Glick, a Jerusalem Post columnist whom Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to persuade to join the Likud’s list for the Knesset in Israel’s 2015 election. Glick wrote on her Facebook account that “Steve Bannon is not anti-Semitic. Period. He is anti-leftist.” She added that “despite the ravings of the ADL, which is now a leftist outfit staffed by Jews rather than a Jewish organization staffed by leftists, ’Jewish’ and ’leftist’ are not synonymous.”
The Republican Jewish Coalition also released a statement, attributed to board member Bernie Marcus, offering support for Bannon. “I have known Bannon for many years,” Marcus wrote. “The person that is being demonized in the media is not the person I know. He is a passionate Zionist and supporter of Israel.” Marcus mentioned that during his tenure as the editor-in-chief of Breitbart, Bannon opened an office for the website in Jerusalem, because “he felt so strongly about this and wanted to ensure that the true pro-Israel story would get out.”
