Walk round an art gallery and you might get, not exactly a forecast of atmospheric conditions to come, but an instructive picture of what the climate had been like when the artist laid brush to canvas.
LONDON, 26 March – Greek scientists have identified a new way to measure air pollution during the last 500 years. They matched paintings of sunsets with a calendar of 50 famous volcanic eruptions recorded between 1500 and 2000.
And they found that successive artists had faithfully if unconsciously recorded the changing colours of the sky as volcanic dust and aerosols scattered light and made the sunsets even more red.
