I got into the industry ten years ago, after a friend saw a small production of a play I’d written. He was a producer on a Microsoft Games project that had burned through three writers on a project, and still didn’t have a story. It was hell - they had all the characters, all the level designs were finalized, and all the fights, but there was no story - they had no idea why the characters were doing any of this.
I did a complete rewrite, jamming a monomyth in there, and was allowed to introduce one character to make it all fit and make sense. After we were all signed off, the designers went and rewrote everything, and it turned into a mess again. I was hired to to go back in and fix it a second time - only now, I couldn’t use all the characters, as some of the voice actors were no longer available for a pickup session. This was the first time I learned an important lesson: all videogame designers are writers. Given half a chance, they will mess with your script.
