The West sees Tehran as a regional player. Iranians see themselves as a global power.

On the campaign trail in 2007, Senator John McCain sang a parody to the tune of the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann”: “Bomb, bomb, bomb … bomb, bomb Iran.” That sentiment resonates in the Donald Trump administration, and it’s understandable. The Iranians continue to push their influence throughout the Middle East: using proxies to threaten U.S. allies; supporting Bashar al-Assad in Syria; fueling the war in Yemen through support for Houthi rebels; and seeking to destabilize Iraq and gain further influence in Lebanon.

Now we face a new twist to Iranian expansionism that demonstrates both Tehran’s ambition and its growing ties to Russia: the Iranian navy announced it will undertake a five-month deployment to the western Atlantic. While it’s unclear how many ships will be involved, Tehran says the flotilla will include a newly built destroyer, the Sahand. Some vessels are expected dock in Venezuela, one of the few countries in the Western Hemisphere that would welcome them.

The Iranian navy will send warships to deploy in the Atlantic from March, a top commander said on Friday, as the Islamic Republic seeks to increase the operating range of its naval forces to the backyard of the United States, its arch foe.

Iran sees the presence of U.S. aircraft carriers in the Gulf as a security concern and its navy has sought to counter that by showing the flag near American waters.

A flotilla will leave for the Atlantic early in the Iranian new year, starting from March, Iran’s naval deputy commander said.

The Atlantic Ocean is far and the operation of the Iranian naval flotilla might take five months,” Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA.

He said Sahand, a newly-built destroyer, would be one of the warships. Sahand has a flight deck for helicopters and Iran says it is equipped with anti-aircraft and anti-ship guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and has electronic warfare capabilities.

Hassani said in December that Iran would soon send two to three vessels on a mission to #Venezuela.

A senior Iranian military official said last month that the navy could sail in the Atlantic near U.S. waters since U.S. aircraft carriers were allowed to move around in international waters near Iran.

Iran’s navy has extended its reach in recent years, launching vessels in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian ships from Somali pirates.

Iran’s navy on Saturday launched a domestically made destroyer, which state media said has radar-evading stealth properties, as tensions rise with arch-enemy, the United States.

In a ceremony carried live on state television, the Sahand destroyer—which can sustain voyages lasting five months without resupply—joined Iran’s regular navy at a base in Bandar Abbas on the Gulf.

“Among our plans in the near future is to send two or three vessels with special helicopters to Venezuela in South America on a mission that could last five months,” Iran’s deputy navy commander, Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani Moqaddam, told the semi-official news agency Mehr.

  • Iranian navy endangering international navigation in Gulf: U.S. commanders | Reuters
    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-security-carrier-idUSKBN16T2CZ

U.S. Navy commanders accused Iran of jeopardizing international navigation by “harassing” warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and said future incidents could result in miscalculation and lead to an armed clash.

They spoke after the U.S. aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush confronted what one of the commanding officers described as two sets of Iranian Navy fast-attack boats that had approached a U.S.-led, five-vessel flotilla as it entered the Strait on Tuesday on a journey from the Indian Ocean into the Gulf.

It was the first time a U.S. carrier entered the narrow waterway, where up to 30 percent of global oil exports pass annually, since President Donald Trump took office in January pledging a tougher U.S. stance toward Iran.

U.S. commanders said Tuesday’s incident, in which the George H.W. Bush sent helicopter gunships to hover over the Iranian speedboats as some came as close as 950 yards (870 meters) away from the aircraft carrier, ended without a shot being fired.

Iranian warships in the Atlantic Ocean are to sail close to US maritime borders for the first time, a senior naval commander has said.

Iranian media quoted Adm Afshin Rezayee Haddad as saying the deployment was a response to US vessels in the Gulf.

The fleet consists of a destroyer and a helicopter-carrying supply ship.

It began its voyage last month and entered the Atlantic though South African waters, the IRNA news agency quoted the admiral as saying.

Persian patrol : Iran sends warships to Atlantics — RT News
      http://rt.com/news/iran-navy-atlantic-patrol-025

The Iranian Navy is sending a fleet of warships to the Atlantic Ocean. Tehran says the ships will be defending sea routes while providing training for their crews.

Iran’s 29th fleet includes the destroyer, Sabalan, and helicopter-carrying support ship, Kharg, the state news agency FARS reported. It is to sail 25,000 nautical miles over its three-month long trip.

On Tuesday, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari was attending a ceremony in the port city of Bandar Abba in Southern Iran to wish the fleet bon voyage.

His deputy, Rear Admiral Seyed Mahmoud Moussavi, who was also present, said Iran is sending a message of peace and friendship to other nations by sending its fleet to international waters in the Atlantic.

BBC News - Iran warships sail via Suez Canal amid Israeli concern
      http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12533803

Last week, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said: "To my regret, the international community is not showing readiness to deal with the recurring Iranian provocations.

“The international community must understand that Israel cannot forever ignore these provocations.”

Et le commentaire du correspondant de la BBC, Jonathan Marcus, pourrait être resservi, un peu adapté pour tenir compte de l’évolution de la situation syrienne et du passage à l’arrière-cour états-unienne.

The passage of two Iranian naval vessels through the Suez Canal represents yet another clear sign of Tehran’s widening strategic horizons. And for Israel and its main ally - the US - it sends multiple signals.

It underscores that if a significant number of Western warships can operate in the Gulf - what Iran sees as its maritime backyard, then Iran too can deploy vessels to the Mediterranean - what Nato countries would regard as their maritime backyard.

The Iranian ships are to be based at a Syrian port, thus solidifying and symbolising the close ties between Damascus and Tehran.

And coming at a time of significant turmoil in the region, the deployment illustrates that Iran is eager to secure its widening strategic interests. If this annoys the Israelis or the Americans, then so much the better.

  • Iranian warships ’dock at Syrian port’
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/iranian-warships-dock-syrian-port

Two Iranian navy ships docked at the Syrian port of Tartus on Friday, Iranian state media said.

The flotilla, consisting of a destroyer and a supply ship, arrived at Tartus port, 220 kms northwest of the Syrian capital Damascus, Mehr News Agency reported on Saturday.

They arrived a day after receiving permission from the Egyptian armed forces to sail through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea on their way to the Syrian coast, the agency said.

Iranian navy commander Admiral Habibollah Sayari said the warships in the Mediterranean Sea would convey Tehran’s message of “peace and friendship.”

Oui oui, et avec les messages de paix et d’amitié que les Américains, les Turques, les Israéliens et les Russes stationnent dans le coin, ça commence même à faire beaucoup de paix et d’amitié pour une si petite région.
