Anti-gay marriage Christian councilor has expulsion upheld
Christina Summers, who wished to vote against government plans for same-sex marriage, was kicked out of Brighton’s liberal Green Party
    20 November 2012 | By Joe Morgan
Christian councilor Christina Summers lost her appeal after she was kicked out of Brighton’s Green Party for voting against same-sex marriage.

An anti-gay marriage Christian councilor has had her expulsion upheld from the far-left Green Party in Brighton.

Christina Summers was kicked out by party officials in the seaside city after voting against the UK government plans to allow gay couples to marry.

The Green Party has now upheld the expulsion after the councilor, now an Independent, appealed against the decision.

In a council debate in July, she said: ‘When you touch marriage, you’re touching family and you’re hitting at the very heart of God and I have an enormous problem with that.’

By disciplining her, Summers said the Green Party is discriminating against Christians – an allegation the party denies.

An inquiry panel recommended her expulsion after concluding she would be in breach of party policy.

This stated if she was selected as a candidate and elected to public office, she would not uphold and advance the values of ‘equality for all people, regardless of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, social origin or any other prejudice.’

Following the decision, Summers said the Green Party was discriminating against Christians, but the party said it defended free speech and freedom of beliefs.

‘It’s a typical symptom of prejudice, blatant prejudice,’ she told the BBC.

‘It raises the big question – can Christians serve in the public realm? They are saying don’t bring your faith into politics.’

A Green Party spokesman said: ‘This appeal panel has upheld none of her points of appeal and has therefore dismissed the appeal itself.’

Despite the party saying the decision represented the end of the appeals process; Summers said the fight was not over.

In a statement through the Christian Legal Centre, she said: ‘I am terribly disappointed at the appeal panel’s decision, not just for myself but for others who share my views on marriage and on free speech.’

  • Uganda to officially pass ‘Kill The Gays’ bill
Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has said 2009’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill will become law by the end of 2012
    12 November 2012 | By Joe Morgan
Uganda parliamentary speaker Rebecca Kadaga has said the country’s Kill The Gays bill will officially be passed by the end of 2012.

Uganda will officially pass the ‘Kill The Gays’ bill at the end of this year despite international criticism.

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga said the anti-gay bill will become law by December since most Ugandans ‘are demanding it’.

Referring to the law as a ‘Christmas gift’ to the population, she spoke of ‘the serious threat’ posed by homosexuals.

The law will broaden the criminalization of same-sex relationships by dividing homosexuality into two categories; aggravated homosexuality and the offense of homosexuality.

‘Aggravated homosexuality’ is defined as gay acts committed by parents or authority figures, HIV-positive people, pedophiles and repeat offenders. If convicted, they will face the death penalty.

The ‘offense of homosexuality’ includes same-sex sexual acts or being in a gay relationship, and will be prosecuted by life imprisonment.

Originally put to government in 2009, the Anti-Homosexuality Bill had been temporarily shelved because of international criticism.

Several European countries have threatened to cut aid to Uganda if it passes, with the UK government warning Uganda it would face severe reductions in financial help.

US President Barack Obama has described it as ‘odious’, and Canadian politician John Baird has said it is ‘vile, abhorrent, and offends decency’.

Uganda lawmaker Atim Ogwal Cecilia Barbara has even suggested there should be a continent-wide ban on homosexuality, saying all African gay people should be jailed for life.

Gay rights activist David Kato was murdered in Uganda in January 2011 shortly after a local newspaper published images of him and other gay people under a headline urging readers to ‘hang them.’

Despite this, Uganda’s LGBT community held a weekend of gay pride events this summer.

According to a 2010 survey by The Pew Research Center, homosexuality is morally unacceptable to 89% of Ugandans.

One in four young gay people have been assaulted in England, and more than half have self-harmed.

The new research, which also found nearly half (47%) have received threats or intimidation as a result of being gay.

As reported by The Independent On Sunday, the figures come from Youth Chances, the biggest social research project into young LGBT people in England.

Dan Baker, Youth Chances project manager, said despite it being 2012, it is still a hard environment to grow up gay.

‘Self-harm jumped out as a really alarming statistic,’ he said. ‘Self-harm is a way of people expressing an internal issue that they might not be able to express. Maybe Britain is not as tolerant as we thought.’

The statistics for self-arm among gay people are significantly higher than the national average of one in 12 young people. Two thirds of women said they had hurt themselves on purpose, compared to 37% of men.

Transgender young adults were the most vulnerable, with four out of five saying they had deliberately harmed themselves.

Youth Chances believes its research shows public attitudes have yet to catch up with the legal system.

Baker said: ‘There’s a lot of great equality now, such as allowing gay couples to adopt and have civil partnerships.

‘But, despite the progress, there seems to be lots of cases of harassment and even assault.

‘If people are being taunted or attacked because of who they are, it shows public opinion behavior hasn’t caught up with legislation.’

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell told the British paper: ‘These statistics are really shocking; they ought to be a wake-up call to every parent, teacher and community leader. As a society, we are still failing LGBT kids on a massive scale.

‘Even today, around half of schools have no anti-bullying program specifically addressing homophobia. Kids are not born bigoted, they become bigoted.

‘All the evidence suggests that education can help combat bigotry and promote understanding and acceptance.’

The three-year project will eventually survey 15,000 young adults. The initial findings are based on the responses of the first 3,500.

Christian preacher blames gays for Hurricane Sandy
Chaplain John McTernan has said God’s judgment of gays caused the hurricane nearing the east coast of the United States
    29 October 2012 | By Joe Morgan
Chaplain John McTernan is blaming Hurricane Sandy on gay people, as well as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney’s ’support’ of gay issues.

An anti-gay Christian preacher is already blaming Hurricane Sandy on gays.

As the east coast of the United States prepares for the storm, which has already killed 60 people in the Caribbean, author and chaplain John McTernan has decided who is at fault.

On his website Defend Proclaim The Faith, the preacher says the gathering storm must be God’s judgment on gays, and punishing the president Barack Obama for coming out in support of marriage equality.

He believes ever since George Bush Sr signed the Madrid Peace Process to divide the land of Israel in 1991, ‘America has been under God’s judgment since this event.’

McTernan said: ‘Obama is 100% behind the Muslim Brotherhood which has vowed to destroy Israel and take Jerusalem.

‘Both candidates are pro-homosexual and are behind the homosexual agenda. America is under political judgment and the church does not know it!’

His reasoning for this is that it has been 21 years since the ‘perfect storm’ of October 1991.

’21 years breaks down to 7 x 3, which is a significant number with God. Three is perfection as the Godhead is three in one while seven is perfection,’ he said.

McTernan had planned to host a prayer meeting tonight (29 October), which would be streamed online on his website.

However as the storm is scheduled to go right over his house, the preacher has warned the sermons may be stopped if the power goes out.

The online minister also blamed Hurricane Isaac, which later became a tropical storm, on homosexuals. He said gay festival Southern Decadence was to blame, as God was ‘putting an end to this city and its wickedness.’

Thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people enjoyed Southern Decadence, and nine preachers were arrested for an aggressive anti-gay demonstration.

Tris Reid-Smith, director and editor of Gay Star News, who is in Baltimore, Maryland for LGBT workplace conference Out and Equal, said: ’So far it looks like any cancellations to events over the next few days are just going to give us more time for partying.

’If God is trying to punish the gays, he sure doesn’t know how to do it.’

Sandy, dubbed a ‘Frankenstorm’, could affect up to 60 million people as several states have declared emergencies, schools have closed and transport services suspended.

Obama will not push for gay marriage in second term
The first sitting US president to back marriage equality has said he hopes Defense of Marriage Act will be overturned
    27 October 2012 | By Joe Morgan
US President Barack Obama has said while he hopes DOMA will be overturned, he will not push for a federal gay marriage law.

President Barack Obama has said he will not push for a federal law allowing gay couples to marry in his second term.

Answering questions sent in by youth voters on MTV yesterday (26 October), he said it is important for individual states to decide the law on marriage equality.

He said: ‘Historically, marriages have been defined at the state level. And there’s a conversation going on.

‘There’s some states that are still having the debate, and I think for us to try to legislate federally into this is probably the wrong way to go.’

He continued: ‘The courts are going to be examining these issues. I’ve stood up and said I’m opposed to the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.

‘There are a couple of cases that are working their way through the courts, and my expectation is that DOMA will be overturned.

‘But ultimately, I believe that if we have that conversation at the state level, the evolution that’s taking place in this country will get us to a place where we are going to be recognizing everybody fairly.’

In the run-up to the upcoming November presidential vote, Obama has been drumming up enthusiasm with young voters.

Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine last week, he said: ‘You know, kids have good instincts. They look at [Romney] and say, “Well, that’s a bullshitter, I can tell”.’

In 2008, Obama won the 18-29 demographic by more than 30 points and is likely to do well there again.

As the first sitting president in United States history to back marriage equality, campaigners have described Obama as doing more for gay rights than any other American leader in history.

In contrast, his Republican opponent Mitt Romney believes in a federal ban on same-sex marriage, and also plans to bring in legislation to stop gay couples from adopting children.

Obama’s comments shortly after it was revealed by polling organization Gallup that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender voters could sway the election.

French minister says kids must learn gay history
Women’s minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said learning about gay historical figures would help stop bullying
    25 October 2012 | By Joe Morgan
Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, France’s women’s rights minister, has say students should learn about gay history, slammed gay cure groups, and supports the universal decriminalization of homosexuality.

France’s women’s rights minister has called for schools to teach about gay historical figures in an attempt to stop bullying.

Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, who is also the Socialist government’s spokesman, said it would help French children who are struggling with their sexuality or gender identity.

As reported by The Telegraph, she said: ‘Today school manuals persist in remaining silent about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual orientation of certain historical figures or authors, even when it explains a large part of their work.’

Citing 19th century poet Arthur Rimbaud, she said while studying his famous love sonnet La Domeur du Val (The Sleeper In The Valley), it would be ridiculous for students to not know it was dedicated to a man.

Bruno Beschizza, the opposition right-wing Union for a Popular Movement party’s national secretary, criticized the suggestion. He said: ‘The government spokeswoman today gives herself the right to censure out children’s schoolbooks to impose her vision of the family.’

Writing on Nouvel Observateur’s website, Yves Delahaie, a secondary schoolteacher, said any self-respecting biography of Rimbaud would not ‘dream of hiding the poet’s homosexuality’, which he called a ‘cliché of French literature.’

However, he added: ‘It is not our place to posthumously “out” historical figures, if anything because they did not choose to talk about it in a public way themselves.’

As translated by The Connexion, Vallaud-Belkacem also said in the interview she supported President Francois Hollande’s attempt to universally decriminalize homosexuality by seeking a resolution in the United Nations.

She said the European Union must adopt anti-homophobia policies, and added the government would be supporting LGBT campaigners to become French ambassadors.

The minister also said she is working to stop the activities of extremist right-wing religious groups seeking to ‘cure’ gay people.

The comments come after the government announced they would be debating same-sex marriage laws on 7 November.

14 celebrity coming out stories which shocked the world
Gay Star News takes a look at 14 men and women who have inspired thousands to be honest about their sexuality
    11 October 2012 | By Joe Morgan
When Frank Ocean came out, it inspired thousands of others to do the same. We celebrate him and others for Coming Out Day.

There is real power when a celebrity is honest about their sexuality or gender identity, as it lets thousands of young gay people know they are not alone.

So to celebrate Coming Out Day (11 October), GSN has gathered together the stories of 14 celebrities who shocked the world when they were revealed who they really are.
    Ellen DeGeneres

When Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian in 1997 on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and later on her sitcom, she didn’t work for three whole years.

But soon after that, she was given a daytime talk show in 2003. With The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she has become one of the most loved personalities on our screens today.

Check out a video of the comic talking with her Oscar-nominated actress and co-star of her coming out episode Laura Dern here:

    Ricky Martin

Before Ricky Martin came out in 2010, he spent 11 years of his life besieged by gay rumors.

The Puerto Rican singer was linked with TV host Rebecca de Alba as well as his ‘Nobody Wants To Be Lonely’ duet partner Christina Aguilera.

In a 2000 interview with British tabloid The Mirror, he said: ‘I don’t think I should have to tell anyone if I am gay or not, or who I’ve slept with or not.’

But in 2010, he finally admitted who he is. In a post on his official website, he said: ‘I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.’
    Jessie J

British bisexual Jessie J became open about her sexuality when she broke the USA.

In a radio interview last year, she said: ‘I’ve never denied it. Whoopie doo guys, yes, I’ve dated girls and I’ve dated boys – get over it.’

Despite that, The Sun ‘outed’ her as a lesbian in April 2012. However, she called it a ‘boring, untrue story’.
    Chaz Bono

Chaz Bono, the only child of Sonny and Cher, is one of the most high-profile transgender advocates in the USA.

Outed by the tabloid press in 1995 as a lesbian, Bono spent years writing about gay rights.

Between 2008-2010, he began his transition and saw his celebrity rise and rise which culminated in appearing as a contestant on one of the highest rated American TV shows Dancing On The Stars.

Check out Bono discussing his transition here:

    Sally Ride

As the first American woman to fly in space, little was known about Sally Ride’s sexuality and personal life for years.

But it was only when she died of pancreatic cancer, in July this year, her obituary revealed she had been in a 27 year relationship with a woman.

On the day of her death, President Barack Obama described her as a ‘national hero and a powerful role model.’
    Orlando Cruz

The first openly gay man to come out and continue competing in professional boxing, Orlando Cruz has made sport history.

In October 2012, the Puerto Rican made an announcement he wanted to be true to himself.

He said: ‘I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career.

‘I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man.’
    Cynthia Nixon

When you try to think of the one television show most straight women would most identify with, it would likely be Sex and the City.

The comic drama set in New York featured four heterosexual women finding love in the big city, and it starred Cynthia Nixon as tough businesswoman Miranda.

While Miranda met marital difficulties with partner Steve, Cynthia Nixon had found true love with a woman. Nixon and her partner activist Christine Marinoni married in May 2012.
    Gareth Thomas

Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas isn’t exactly the stereotype of a gay guy, considering he is a star of one of the most macho, tough sports in the world.

But when he came out in 2010, he was the first openly gay athlete on any major sports team in the world.

Thomas says: ‘If sportspeople come out and share such a powerful story, and such a positive message, it changes the world. If someone is openly gay in sport, and being able to continue that sport, it is such a positive message for the world.’
    Chely Wright

You may not have heard of Chely Wright, but she is one of the USA’s biggest country stars.

For an industry that is renowned to be Republican, and by default, homophobic, Wright has been able to forge out a successful career.

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, she said when the TV host came out it inspired her but also terrified her.

‘I was watching it with my sister and my father who did not know I was gay.The minute you came out, my father reached for the remote control and flipped the TV off and said it was disgusting.

‘It sent me into a spiral. I made that promise again to never tell anyone in my family, or the record-buying public, that I was gay.’

But as years past, and they grew further apart, she had no choice to tell her father.

He got up on stage the next night at one of Wright’s gigs and said: ‘I’m so glad you guys came out to see my daughter, I’m really proud of her. Now kid, get back to singing.’

    Check out the interview here:

    Matt Bomer

Matt Bomer has played a male stripper, a detective, and is now being lined up to play female fantasy Christian in the film adaption of Fifty Shades of Grey.

And he is gay. After he came out in February 2012, he said: ‘I never really endeavored to hide anything.

‘But there were times I chose not to relegate my history to the back page of a magazine, which to me is sort of akin to putting your biography on a bathroom wall.’
    Lady Gaga

One of the most successful pop stars today, openly bisexual Lady Gaga is one of the most famous gay rights advocates.

While she is openly Christian, she has risked backlash by slamming the Pope for his anti-gay views.

She said: ‘What the Pope thinks of being gay does not matter. It doesn’t matter to the world. It matters to the people who like the Pope and follow the Pope.’

Check out Gaga performing John Lennon’s Imagine at a Human Rights benefit here:

    Jim Parsons

When The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons came out, it wasn’t by announcing it on the cover of a magazine.

He came out publicly in a New York Times profile interview when he was starring in Broadway in the play Harvey.

The article simply said: ‘Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship.’
    KD Lang

Canadian born KD Lang is one of the most successful artists of all time.

Winning multiple Grammy awards, Lang came out in an interview with The Advocate in 1992.

In an interview with Canadian LGBT news website Xtra!, she said: ‘To celebrate your own uniqueness is the biggest celebration of confidence.

‘It’s a testimony to your parents and to yourself to live your life as who you are.’

‘Coming out as a lesbian was important,’ she said. ‘When you’re holding in things or not being honest, all these things affect your voice. My voice is definitely designated to who I am as a person.’
    Frank Ocean

Ever since R&B star Fran Ocean came out, he has seen his career skyrocket to success.

In July, the Odd Future member published what was meant to be the notes for his album Channel Orange.

He describes meeting a man when he was 19 years old and falling in love, for real, for the first time.

Ocean says when he looked back on his previous girlfriends and the love songs he used to play for them, the lyrics were ‘written in a language’ he did not yet speak.

When it was released, Channel Orange reached the top of the US Billboard R&B Chart. It just shows that honesty really is the best policy.

Stephen Fry slams Church of England for spreading lies about gay marriage
Gay British broadcaster accuses religious leaders of trying to appease the ’extreme end’ of their membership
    05 October 2012 | By Joe Morgan
Gay TV presenter Stephen Fry has slammed the Church of England for spreading lies about marriage equality.

Gay broadcaster, actor, author, presenter and wit Stephen Fry has slammed the Church of England of caving to extremists who have spread lies about marriage equality.

The atheist QI presenter said religious leaders who oppose same-sex weddings are trying to appease the ‘extreme end’ of their membership.

Fry reiterated the UK government’s continued declarations which say no one will be forced to carry out gay weddings if it is against their religious beliefs.

In a video for the Out4Marriage campaign, he says: ‘Those who are against gay marriage are somehow spreading this disinformation that we are going to say “You, you Reverend so-and-so, are forced to hold this gay marriage in your church”.

‘It’s not true! People who run churches, synagogues or mosques are not forced to marry previously divorced people, for example.’

Fry then turned on the Church of England, which is currently deeply divided over the issue.

‘It’s wrong, in a country like ours, which has an established Church, just because their more extreme end is screeching with outrage at the idea of this, that we are not allowed to be married,’ he said.

‘It’s unfair on plenty of other religious people and it is misrepresenting what we require, which is only the same as anybody else, and that’s to express our love in the fullest possible way of commitment.’

Fry, who is currently starring as puritan comic villain Malvolio in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, said while gay people used to be known as ‘bohemian and outrageous’, they are really just human beings who want to be loved just like everybody else.

The Out4Marriage video ends with a final argument, where Fry finishes: ‘At least 270 species of animal have been noted exhibiting homosexual behavior but only one species of animal ever, so far as we know, has exhibited homophobic behavior – and that’s the human being.

’Ask yourself what is really natural.’

The UK government is expected to release the findings of their consultation on marriage equality soon.

Gay actor Rupert Everett has called same-sex marriages ’beyond tragic’.

In another instance of foot-in-mouth disease, gay actor Rupert Everett has called marriages between same-sex couples ‘beyond tragic’.

In an interview with The Guardian, he said: ‘Why do queens want to go and get married in churches?

‘Obviously this crusty old pathetic Anglican church – the most joke-ish church of all jokey churches – of course they don’t want to have queens getting married.

‘It’s kind of understandable that they don’t; they’re crusty old calcified freaks. But why do we want to get married in churches? I don’t understand that, myself, personally.’
