    Confessed Killer of Rafik Hariri Released From Prison

    Akbar confessed his involvement in the assassination of Hariri to investigators, disclosing information that would later turn out to be accurate. However, on the next day, Akbar retracted his statement, after a six-hour meeting with Samir Shehadeh and Wissam al-Hassan.
    When the rest of the cell appeared before the head of the military tribunal, Nizar Khalil, they all retracted their previous statements, which they claimed had been extracted under torture. The suspects accused the Information Branch of fabricating their statements, while Akbar denied any involvement in Hariri’s assassination.

    The issue of whether Nabaa and Akbar had anything to do with Hariri’s murder became the focus of much controversy. What is certain is that the cell actively supported fighters in Iraq.

    The scene in Lebanon this past week was part of the legacy of Wissam al-Hassan. When the Hariri militia fled the scene on 7 May 2008, the Intelligence Branch of al-Hassan relied on an alternative scenario. They increased their sponsorship of Salafi and Bin Ladenite groups in Lebanon. A friend of al-Hassan, Wiam Wahhab (a pro-Syrian regime politician with little popular support), appeared on TV and said that al-Hassan told him that his visit with Petraeus last month dealt exclusively with the Tripoli-based armed Salafi groups. These are now the orphans of Mr. al-Hassan.

    It was just before sunset. The area was extremely tense following news of the assassination in Beirut of Wissam al-Hassan, head of the Internal Security Forces’ information branch. Around 80 gunmen, supporters of the Future Movement or allied Islamist groups, gathered about 500 meters away from the headquarters of the Islamic Tawheed Movement. The gunmen prepared to attack the headquarters, as is common when the security and political situation in Lebanon and Tripoli reaches boiling point.

    Sheikh Asmar approached the scene unaccompanied. He spoke to the men calmly, maintaining a demeanor familiar to anyone who had attended his Friday sermons or religious classes. “What you are doing is wrong,” he was heard telling them. “Who do you want to kill? Don’t you know that it is impermissible for a Muslim to shed another Muslim’s blood?”

    The men did not reply, instead, they encircled him. It’s likely that Sheikh Asmar didn’t expect a response, given that the highly-charged political and sectarian climate deafens people to all voices of reason. He repeated his appeal, but was cut short by one of the gunmen who fired a bullet into his head, killing him instantly.

    Mort d’un drone de général au Liban | Bakchich

    La mort du général Wissam al-Hassan, chef du renseignement libanais a été longuement commenté par la presse internationale. Peur d’une contamination de la guerre syrienne, crainte d’un embrasement généralisé etc… Les habituels spectres qui hante l’histoire du pays du Cèdre. Aucun média ne s’est en revanche penché sur une brève paru dans un média libanais quelques jours avant l’assassinat du général. Selon cet écho, paru dans le journal Ad-Diar, Hassan a récemment remis toutes les informations dont il disposait sur le drône du Hezbollah qui a surveillé Israël à la CIA. Et le quotidien de préciser qu’ « une coordination est en train de se mettre en place entre la section de service de renseignements des FSI (Forces de sécurité intérieures) et le Mossad israélien (…) sous l’égide des renseignement américains ». Al Hassan a même rencontré ses homologues israéliens à Paris. Une coopération qui n’a pas eu l’heur de plaire à tout le monde...

    Hassan was clearly coordinating help and assistance for the armed Syrian groups and he bragged to journalists about his support for the “Syrian revolution.” There is plenty of cash these days for those who support the "Syrian revolution” and who can provide logistical help. And Hassan and Rifi worked closely (on a daily basis) with Saudi intelligence. It is possible that the Syrian regime wanted to get rid of him. Others think that Israel may have wanted to punish him for his arrest of various Israeli spies (a senior Israeli military intelligence commander committed suicide after the arrest of Israeli spies in Lebanon).

    Yet, what is left unsaid is that Saad Hariri — as incompetent and foolish as he is — has been playing with fire. He foolishly decided to play the game of “regime change” which brought about the humiliation of the US in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sitting on his yacht in exile in the Mediterranean, Hariri may have been responsible for instigating a game that ultimately resulted in the death of his key aide.

    Mise à jour : il est mort. Il est confirmé que le chef de la sécurité de Hariri (et coordinateur du renseignement séoudien au Liban), Wissam al-Hassan, a été visé par l’explosion de Beyrouth. Un reporter présent sur place témoigne que Hassan a été sérieusement blessé. Al-Hassan a été chargé par le renseignement séoudien de faciliter l’armement et le financement de l’Armée syrienne libre au Liban. Son nom est lié à un bateau, le Lutfallah II, qui a été intercepté alors qu’il transportait des armes pour les rebelles syriens au Liban. Cet ancien garde du corps de Rafic Hariri est rapidement monté en grade et est devenu le chef d’un appareil sécuritaire principalement sunnite (Shu‘bat Al-Ma‘lumat, ou Services de renseignement) qui a reçu des dizaines de millions de financement américain occulte. Hassan a été initialement suspecté dans l’assassinat de Hariri parce qu’il était absent ce jour-là et parce qu’il avait une longue histoire de liens avec les services de renseignement syriens. Il avait déclaré aux enquêteurs qu’il étudiait pour un examen ce jour-là.

    PS. Les médias occidentaux ne rapporteront PAS sous un autre angle que celui-là : que le service de renseignement de Hassan était responsable de l’arrestation de nombreux espions et terroristes au service d’Israël au Liban.

    PPS. C’est le troisième assassinat (ou tentative) visant des chefs du Service de renseignement.

      Voir aussi ce qu’en dit Malbrunot, qui ne fait pas mystère des ombres et des mystères qui entourent le personnage aux yeux des services français, ce qui ne semble pourtant empêcher que son rôle dans l’aide à l’ASL soit apprécié :

      Wissam el-Hassan ne se trouvait pas dans le convoi qui accompagnait Hariri le jour du drame. Cette absence avait immédiatement soulevé de vives interrogations sur sa loyauté au chef du gouvernement libanais, pas de la part de Saad Hariri, qui hérita ensuite du pouvoir à Beyrouth, mais surtout de la veuve Nazeq et de Jacques Chirac proche ami de la victime, qui était alors président de la République. Malgré les démentis, ces derniers ne furent jamais vraiment convaincus de son innocence. Il faut dire que Wissam el-Hassan s’en expliqua fort mal lorsqu’une enquête de la télévision canadienne relança l’affaire il y a trois ans.

      Au Liban, ses adversaires se comptent essentiellement parmi le camp pro-syrien, notamment au sein du Hezbollah, le parti chiite allié de Damas et de l’Iran. Son service permit en août dernier d’arrêter l’ancien ministre libanais pro-syrien Michel Samaha, accusé d’avoir fomenté un complot terroriste visant à déclencher une guerre confessionnelle dans le pays. Une accusation que certains jugeaient peu credible, notamment en France parmi la communaute du renseignement qui connaissait bien Michel Samaha. Quoi qu’il en soit, Wissam el-Hassam et son service etaient egalement critiques pour faciliter l’acheminement des armes aux rebelles syriens, via le Liban.

      Les évocations de l’affaire Samaha dans les portraits de Hassan sont très intéressantes, parce qu’elles révèlent une contradiction dans les récits actuels. Il n’apparaît pas que Samaha ait voulu « déclencher une guerre confessionnelle », ça c’est ce que racontent les 14 Mars depuis les premières minutes suivant l’arrestation ; la lecture des fuites de ses confessions dans le quotidien de Murr indiquent au contraire que la motivation centrale, c’est de perturber l’arrivée d’armes vers les rebelles syriens depuis le Liban, et de zigouiller les responsables les responsables du trafic et les opposants libanais directement impliqués dans l’insurrection. Il y a quelques phrases très cyniques sur des dommages collatéraux, et dans l’ensemble c’est affreux, mais ça n’est pas du tout la même chose que vouloir ouvertement déclencher une guerre confessionnelle.

      De fait, la mort de Hassan entre dans cette même logique : apparemment, zigouiller quelqu’un qui a la haute main sur les livraisons d’armes au rebelles syriens.

      Or, ce que justement révèle l’affaire Samaha, c’est que le régime syrien ne peut pas du tout compter sur le Hezbollah pour effectuer ce genre de basses œuvres. Alors qu’évidemment le parti dispose de moyens et de compétences infiniment plus adaptées à une exécution politico-militaire, l’appareil sécuritaire syrien occulte au Liban se réduirait désormais à un politicien comme Samaha.

      Donc, évoquer l’affaire Samaha, qui démontre que les syriens ne bénéficient pas des services du Hezbollah pour exécuter pour ce type d’exécution, et en même temps évoquer le Hezbollah comme possible responsable de l’assassinat de Hassan, c’est une grosse contradiction. D’autant que les réactions officielles du Hezbollah à l’arrestation de Samaha sont pour le moins timide.

      intéressante remarque.
      Le Monde ne fait pas dans la dentelle sur Hassan et est bcp moins loquace que G. Malbrunot sur les ombres du personnage de Hassan. Quant à Issa Goraieb dans l’OJ, qui voit en lui un « superflic » n’en parlons pas.

    Le général Wissam Al-Hassan, chef des renseignements de la police libanaise aurait été tué dans l’attentat, selon la chaîne de télévision Al-Jadeed. Une information confirmée par l’AFP qui cite une source gouvernementale. Le général Hassan était un proche de Saad Hariri, chef de l’opposition libanaise hostile au régime de Damas. Il était pressenti pour prendre la tête des FSI à la fin de l’année.

    Note : Wissam al-Hassan n’était pas chef des renseignements de la police, mais des Forces de sécurité intérieure.

    New TV in Beirut just aired an audio tape with mini-Hariri and his chief of intelligence, Wisam Hasan, and German Hariri investigator, Gerhard Lehmann, and... the FAMOUS FALSE WITNESS, MUHAMMAD ZUHAYR AS-SIDDIQ (the most famous of the false witness who has woven so many fabrications about who was responsible for the Hariri investigation and who has been aided by French intelligence and Dubai intelligence). The significance of the audio tape can’t be overstated: this will officially put the last nail in the coffin of the Hariri tribunal. Hariri has officially denied any knowledge of the “false witnesses” and in this meeting he seems to be receiving orders from Siddiq himself. Now we know why the Hariri camp has been fiercely opposing the demand by the opposition to refer the “false witness” matter to the Justice Council in Lebanon. Of course, the testimony of Saddiq was the only reason why the “four generals” were incarcerated. Now you see why I never bothered to take the Hariri tribunal seriously. It was a joke before it was formed by an Israeli/US decision. This is the biggest gift to Hizbullah for the new year. Expect a press conference by Nasrallah this week.

      Al-Jadid TV [New TV] in Lebanon just aired this taped recording of a meeting that took place between Saad al-Hariri, Information Branch chief Colonel Wissam al-Hassan, STL deputy chief investigator Gerhard Lehmann, and Muhammad Zuhair al-Siddiq, one of the false witnesses whose testimony was used by Mehlis to accuse Syria for plotting the murder of Rafiq al-Hariri. It records the four men laying out a plan for how to convince the international community of Syria’s culpability. They all believe Syria to be the instigator of the killing. They agree that they must present the world with an air-tight case and lots of proof. Saddiq explains to Hariri that he tried to warn him of May Shidiyyaq’s attempted assassination two days ahead of time, but claims Hariri refused to answer it. Hariri asks Saddiq why he didn’t text him. Hariri calls Saddiq a “diarrhea mouth” to Mehlis’s lieutenant, but goes on to explain that he should be believed and is trustworthy. This is damaging to the Tribunal and Hariri because it shows how tainted Mehlis’ reports were and how eager the European investigators were to take at face value trumped up evidence. For Hariri, it is damaging because he swore that he had not met with Saddiq or any of the false witnesses.

      The TV station said the broadcast was intended to show a link between Hariri and Siddiq, whom March 8 forces describe as a false witness and the international tribunal does not recognize.

      Al-Jadid accused the caretaker premier of “hiding the truth and playing with the bloods of February 14 martyrs” in reference to the bombing that killed the former PM and 22 others.

      The meeting was also attended by former chief investigator Detlev Mehlis’ assistant Gerhard Lehmann and police intelligence chief Col. Wissam al-Hassan, according to the tape.

      In the audiotape, Siddiq told Hariri that the report of U.N. investigators probing his father’s assassination should name six Syrians and four Lebanese.

      BEYROUTH - Concernant le rapport relatif à l’enregistrement de conversations ayant eu lieu dans le cadre de l’enquête sur l’attentat de Rafik Hariri et diffusé samedi soir par la chaîne de télévision Al-Jadid, le bureau d’information du Premier ministre sortant Saad Hariri a diffusé un communiqué indiquant ce qui suit :

      "La dernière conversation attribuée au président Saad Hariri et au colonel Wissam Hassan avec Mohammad Zouhair Siddiq en présence de l’adjoint du procureur général Gerhard Lehman a eu lieu à la demande de la commission d’enquête internationale qui a organisé cet entretien et chargé Lehman d’y assister. « La conversation a eu lieu mais la chaîne Al-Jadid a émis des paragraphes empreints de provocation médiatique afin de l’extraire de son contexte d’origine. Cette chaîne n’ajoute d’ailleurs aucun élément susceptible d’accélérer ou de retarder le cours de l’enquête », selon le bureau de Hariri.

      La contre-attaque est assez minable :

      « Cet enregistrement attribué à des témoins devant la commission d’enquête internationale est une affaire de renseignement par excellence qui nous pousse à nous poser des questions sur les visées de sa diffusion médiatique. »
