Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia want to jointly deal with red tape related to the use of EU subsidies, gas deliveries from Russia and sanctions against Russia over the crisis in Ukraine this year, the prime ministers of the three countries said today.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann and Czech and Slovak PMs, Bohuslav Sobotka and Robert Fico want to achieve an improvement in the relations between their neighboring countries.

The prime ministers, who are all leaders of socialist parties, plan to meet once a year. The next meeting will be held in Slovakia.

Sobotka said the prime ministers would every year agree on main issues with which they would be dealing together.

He said other issues on which the Austrian, Czech and Slovak politicians decided to jointly focus are the transport infrastructure, protection of employees in EU countries, education of young people and their position on the labor market.

Commentator Daniel Anýž writes in daily Hospodářské noviny (HN) today that the Czech center-left government that formed one year ago seems to prefer Austria to Poland.

The Poles, who form the Visegrad Group (V4) along with the Czechs, Hungarians and Slovaks, are pro-American and active in NATO, while Austria is neutral and open to Russia, Anýž says.
