Ten Years Ago Portugal Legalized All Drugs — What Happened Next? | | AlterNet
►http://www.alternet.org/story/151635/ten_years_ago_portugal_legalized_all_drugs_--_what_happened_next/?page=1
Following decriminalization, Portugal eventually found itself with the lowest rates of marijuana usage in people over 15 in the EU: about 10%. Compare this to the 40% of people over 12 who regularly smoke pot in the U.S., a country with some of the most punitive drugs laws in the developed world. Drug use of all kinds has declined in Portugal: Lifetime use among seventh to ninth graders fell from 14.01% to 10.6%. Lifetime heroin use among 16-18 year olds fell from 2.5% to 1.8%. And what about those horrific HIV infection rates that prompted the move in the first place? HIV infection rates among drug users fell by an incredible 17%, while drug related deaths were reduced by more than half.

"Here’s the thing about G+, for me. Understand that I am not upset in the slightest. The system just doesn’t work so well for me. Because:
1) even with all notifications switched off, that little red light in Gmail is baked in and I can’t turn it off. Which means that, even with all notifications switched off, that red light goes off for me every sixty seconds, with the number 1 in it, and then it starts incrementing. For someone who does half his work in Gmail, that is really a bit irritating.
2) Relevancy captures work better on Twitter. In fact, discovery works better, too, as you can see who your twitter friends talk to (in a couple of ways).
3) Also, have you noticed that when your friends arrive on Twitter, they tweet at you? But when they arrive on G+ they assume the notification that they put you in a circle will work? But you get at least ten notifications every minute on your Gmail button, and the notifications sort of vanish into a memory hole if you don’t have email notifications on, so if you are say asleep or eating or taking a piss or hey maybe even not online for a day... SO, when you come back, your friend who added you to a circle is one of a thousand little faces. If you’re me. And the relevancy/find capture doesn’t work so well, as noted.
4) Which also means you miss people whom you might just be interested in following. I can pull up the last few days’ of “people who have followed me on Twitter” pretty easily. That’s how I found that, to give just two recent examples, Al Murray and Mark Romanek were following me."

The earliest webcomics predate the World Wide Web and are almost as old as public online file transfer. Eric Monster Millikin, best known for the alt-strip FetusX, lays claim to the first online comic, a Wizard of Oz parody called “Witches in Stitches” that he distributed through CompuServe.

►http://www.businessinsider.com/google-will-not-allow-google-profiles-with-fake-names-2011-7
If you create a Google+ account under a fake name, it might be suspended.
A Second Life user tried to create an account with the name of his avatar from the game, Opensource Obscure. According to Wagner James Au, Google canceled his account, then contacted him to get him to create a profile with his real name in the main spot. He was allowed to use his Second Life name in a secondary spot.

Back in the late ’90s, when McNeil was still self-publishing one issue at a time, most of us discovered Finder by accident. You’d come upon an issue or two — almost never a full set — containing what seemed to be a fragment of a much larger story, like tuning in to a telenovela from Tlön. You couldn’t quite tell what was going on, but the glimpse was tantalizing.

“Thomas Woodwind. A man of six feet or so, quite lean, with a good Patrick Stewart-ish skull fuzzed with very short pale hair. Paranoid eyes. Tending to very long black coats, with poacher’s pockets sewn on the inside. A bluetooth earpiece cupping each ear. Black gloves – no fingerprints, reduction of epithelials.”
SVK is a collaboration between writer Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Crooked Little Vein, RED), artist Matt “D’Israeli” Brooker (Stickleback, Lazarus Churchyard, 2000AD) and London-based design studio BERG.
An experimental publication, SVK comprises the SVK object and a comic book.
Comics break the rules of storytelling, invent new ones, and break them again – more often than almost any other medium. This graphic novella is about looking – an investigation into perception, storytelling and optical experimentation that inherits some of the curiosities behind the previous work of BERG.
Put it in the Cloud? Are You Nuts?

As of Sat, July 2 2011, Dropbox has joined Facebook and who-knows-how-many-other ass-backward companies in declaring eminent domain on their user’s data. That’s right, boys and girls, if you’re using Dropbox for storing your manuscripts, photographs, creative works, etc., you shouuld know that their revised TOS says that:
“you grant us (and those we work with to provide the Services) worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable rights to use, copy, distribute, prepare derivative works (such as translations or format conversions) of, perform, or publicly display that stuff to the extent we think it necessary for the Service.”
In other words, they own your stuff.
Not that this would stand up for a minute in court–but do you want to be a test case?

I had this idea for a book that starts as a Scott McCloud how to draw comics or how to do perspective or draw manga book– hosted by a guy and his beautiful assistant. 3 chapters in to a standard how book to the assistant is found dead and then the learning comics part gets dropped and it switches to a murder mystery.
Or like, I’ve never seen a serious comic showing the life cycle of a fungus
Even if stories come from the old roots I think doing them in new ways creates something bigger than just the root idea. plus as a reader or an artist I feel like you have to have hope for undiscovered country. You can’t be an explorer that already expects every mountain to have a flag planted on it– there are still mountains on mars.

The Nisoor Square Shootings (Interactive Comic) :
Interactive timeline comic about the Blackwater shootings in Nisoor Square, Baghdad in 2007, where 17 Iraqi civilians were killed. The comic takes our slogan ’there is more than one truth’ to the next level, by showing several different perspectives on the incident pieced together from news reports and eyewitness testimony.

SPACE GIRL !
Contexte :
Space Girl [Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger]
[Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger]
Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger wrote Space Girl in 1952 for a short ballad-opera with the title You’re Only Young Once to be performed by the Theatre Workshop. It is a parody on The Ghost Soldier Song which was popular with American soldiers during the First World War and mocks most of the major themes of 1940s science fiction. A version of the song was recorded on The World of Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, Volume 2: Songs from the Radio Ballads, released in 1971 on Argo Records.
Shirley Collins sang a much shorter version of Space Girl on the 1960 LP Rocket Along: New Ballads on Old Lines. She was accompanied by Robin Hall, guitar, Jimmy McGregor, mandolin, and Vic Pitt, double bass.
Eliza Carthy sang Space Girl on the Imagined Village’s second CD, Empire & Love (2010).

reMIND - Email Answers : Are there Financial Advantages to Self-Publishing ?
If you sell it yourself, you can make more of the profits on each book and in turn you can sell fewer books to break even. Publishers take on lots of new authors every year and only a fraction of those artist make any money at all. Sure there are the few that become very successful and make a good living but they are a special case. Plus you never see the years of work that these artists put into building their craft before getting picked up in the first place.
(...)
I can’t tell you how many amazing artists I’ve talked to that have been published through big comic publishers who have never seen a penny for their books. One person I know said he sold over 10,000 copies and never saw a dime. I’m not saying that these comic publishers are bad but I AM saying that it’s someone else’s business. The publisher makes money first and then the creator makes money second. If you become the publisher then you make the money first.

[Nixon] would probably also feel vindicated (and envious) that ALL the crimes he committed against me–which forced his resignation facing impeachment–are now legal.
That includes burglarizing my former psychoanalyst’s office (for material to blackmail me into silence), warrantless wiretapping, using the CIA against an American citizen in the US, and authorizing a White House hit squad to “incapacitate me totally” (on the steps of the Capitol on May 3, 1971). All the above were to prevent me from exposing guilty secrets of his own administration that went beyond the Pentagon Papers. But under George W. Bush and Barack Obama, with the PATRIOT Act, the FISA Amendment Act, and (for the hit squad) President Obama’s executive orders. they have all become legal.

You’ve probably heard of Kickstarter, the website where people post pitches for creative projects and invite the public to contribute money to fund those projects. You’ve probably heard that comics material is a popular category on Kickstarter. If someone told you that Kickstarter funded roughly the same amount of comics material as DC Comics’ Vertigo Imprint, you’d look at them like they were crazy.
And you’d be wrong to do so.
