More than five million people were arrested between 2000 and 2013 while trying to cross the border from Mexico into Arizona. A further 6.4 million were apprehended in Texas, California, and New Mexico. Thousands more perished in the furnace-like heat of the Sonoran Desert, their bodies rarely recovered. Yet despite the arduousness of the crossing and the high-tech surveillance systems arrayed against them, most of the survivors will attempt to cross again.
Jason De León, an anthropologist and National Geographic Emerging Explorer, grew up in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. His father is Mexican, his mother is from the Philippines, and he spent his childhood speaking Spanish. For his book, The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail, he travelled up and down the border, interviewing would-be migrants and the relatives of those who died making the crossing. Their often harrowing stories give a human face to these desperate journeys—and overturn many of the negative stereotypes used to discredit them.

L’état d’urgence (1955-2005). De l’#Algérie coloniale à la #France contemporaine : destin d’une loi
Cet article étudie la création et les usages de la loi d’état d’urgence entre 1955 et 2005. Cette loi porte la marque de la guerre d’Algérie, pendant laquelle elle fut élaborée et modifiée. Au final, elle se présente comme l’équivalent d’un état de siège contournant l’armée. L’état d’urgence fut déclaré cinq fois : en Algérie en 1955, en France en 1958 puis de 1961 à 1963, en Nouvelle-Calédonie en 1985, puis de nouveau en France en 2005. Alors que les débats contemporains la dénoncent comme une loi coloniale, c’est pendant la période gaulliste qu’elle connut sa durée d’application la plus longue et la moins contrôlée. Ainsi, elle s’enracine doublement dans l’histoire de France : comme une loi conçue pour répondre aux insurrections indépendantistes, mais aussi comme une loi de répression politique, lorsque la République doit faire face à ses « ennemis », depuis les « hors la loi » de la période révolutionnaire jusqu’aux communistes au XXe siècle.

The fastest growing city in the world is Batam in Indonesia … or Niamey in Niger … or maybe Xiamen in China. It all depends on who you ask.
Batam is the fastest-growing city in the world by population, according to US-based consultancy Demographia, which bases its annual Demographia World Urban Areas ranking largely on the United Nations’ 2010-20 world population forecasts – but only includes cities with a population of 1 million or more. Batam is close to Singapore and operates as a transport hub and industrial area, while a free-trade zone boosts trade with the island city-state. Batam had a population of 1.1 million in the latest estimate, with an annual growth of 7.4%.
Second on Demographia’s ranking is Mogadishu in Somalia, with a population of 2.1 million, growing at 6.9%. Mogadishu’s growth is driven by its improving security situation and economic prospects after decades of civil war – many Somalis have returned from abroad.

U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were 5,406 million metric tons (MMmt) in 2014, 1% (51 MMmt) above their 2013 level. Energy-related emissions also increased in 2013, but because of declines in earlier years, the 2014 emissions were still roughly 10% below their 2005 level.

In 1950, the fishing village of Shenzhen in south-east China had 3,148 inhabitants. By 2025, the UN predicts, that number will exceed 12 million. Congo’s capital Kinshasa will have gone from 200,000 to more than 16 million, growing over the next decade at the vertiginous rate of 4% a year (about 40 people an hour). Meanwhile Brazil’s economic engine São Paulo will have slowed to less than 1% per annum, nonetheless experiencing a 10-fold expansion over the 75-year period.

À partir des années 1970, la sociologie comme la philosophie morale et politique se mettent à parler le langage de l’économie. Partout triomphe le ’modèle économique’. Mais pour que ce dernier puisse se généraliser ainsi, il lui aura fallu se transformer. Dans ce chapitre, nous nous efforcerons de caractériser ces deux états du modèle économique, standard et standard élargi.
Quant au cœur du modèle économique en général, Saint Augustin (354-430) n’en avait-il pas dit l’essentiel en racontant l’histoire suivante ? : Un jour, un inconnu parcourt la cité en proclamant : « Ce soir, je vous dirai ce que vous désirez tous. » Le soir venu, la foule est immense. Et notre homme lui dit : « Oui, je sais ce que vous pensez tous. Vous voulez tous acheter au meilleur marché possible, et vendre le plus cher, possible. » Une société est-elle possible, fondée sur de telles prémisses ? Comment, et à quelles conditions ? Avec quels résultats ? Telle est la question centrale posée par la science économique standard jusque dans les années 1960.
