Kuwait City — Kuwait on Thursday closed the privately-run Al Watan satellite television channel, which has been critical of the government, citing financial reasons.

The commerce and industry ministry said it has revoked the commercial licence of the company that owns the channel after it lost most of its capital.

The information ministry followed the measure by withdrawing Al Watan’s media licence.

The station went off the air after police ordered staff out of the building.

The move comes almost five months after authorities revoked the commercial and media licences of Al Watan newspaper for the same reasons.

The decision to close the daily has since been upheld by the lower and appeals courts. The case is currently before the supreme court.

Al Watan TV and newspaper are owned by former oil minister Sheikh Ali Khalifa Al Sabah, a member of the ruling family, and it is managed by his son Sheikh Khalifa.

The two media outlets had traditionally supported the government, except over the past two years when they adopted a tougher line.

The former speaker of Kuwait’s parliament Jasem Al Khorafi has not been charged with toppling the regime, contrary to regional media reports, his lawyers told Gulf News yesterday.
Kuwait’s Al Watan newspaper, one of the country’s most popular, reported on October 1 that Al Khorafi had been charged with attempting to topple the regime, laundering money and of contact with an enemy state following a two-week investigation. The report was cited by a number of regional newspapers, including Gulf News.
Al Khorafi has been caught in the middle of a high-profile controversy about an alleged plot to “topple the regime” that has pitted him against a former minister who is also a senior member of the ruling Al Sabah family.
The highly controversial case came out in the open in December, 2013 when a Twitter user reported that Shaikh Ahmad Al Fahd Al Sabah, the former deputy premier for economic affairs and energy minister and a nephew of the Emir, Shaikh Sabah Al Ahamd, had received an audio tape that allegedly claimed that Jasem Al Khorafi and former Prime Minister Shaikh Nasser Al Mohammad, another nephew of the Emir, were “conspiring to topple the regime”. The tweeter was held for more than a month before he was released.

The hype around the story and the involvement of high profile figures led the prosecutor to issue a blanket gag order on the issue later that month, saying it was “undermining the public order”.
Al Khorafi has appeared before the public prosecution a number of times in connection with the case, his lawyers confirmed.
Al Watan and another newspaper, Alam Al Youm, were suspended in April and June for two weeks and five days respectively for covering the story and violating the gag order.
Ebrahim Al Kandari, Al Khorafi’s lawyer, said that the former speaker initially appeared before the public prosecution after having filed a complaint against those who spread the news about the alleged tape on Twitter, accusing them of publishing false news.
Al Khorafi also went to the public prosecution to give his statement as a complainant against Shaikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, accusing him of inciting the Twitter users to publish information about the alleged tape, of defamation, perjury and fabricating evidence, as per Al Kandari.
A third visit to the public prosecution by Al Khorafi was to give his testimony following a complaint by Shaikh Ahmad Al Fahad against him.
Al Kandari stressed that Al Khorafi was not charged, contrary to media reports.
“We want the truth to come out. Al Khorafi has filed a legal complaint against Shaikh Ahamd because his accusations undermine national security,” he added.
In April, the prosecutor summoned Shaikh Ahmad as a witness to hear his version about what happened and about the alleged audio tape. Shaikh Ahmad denied there was any tape, according to Al Kandari and Mishaal Al Othman, another lawyer of Al Khorafi. However, he added that he did receive scattered recording on “local, parliamentary, [ruling] family, financial and regional issues” and that he dealt with them “in accordance with my patriotic duties”.
The report about Al Khorafi being charged is said to have only appeared on Al Watan’s website, and not in print. News sites in the country are not governed by the same laws that regulate print media. The gag order however encompassed all news outlets, including online media and social media.
The former speaker has filed a complaint against Al Watan for publishing what his lawyers say is a false news report.

Manama: A court in Kuwait on Sunday suspended two national newspapers for two weeks after they breached a gag ordered by the public prosecutor on publishing information in a highly controversial leaked tape.
The suspension occurred days after the information ministry warned that it would temporarily shut down the Al Watan and Alem Al Youm for not complying with the gag.
Al Watan on its website said there have been reports about the suspension, but it did not receive a formal notice.
Both dailies on Sunday published articles and views by several lawmakers opposing the idea of suspending newspapers for publishing articles.

  • Egypt, Sami Anan and Presidency : Let the games start - Par Zeinobia, blog Egyptian chronicles

    http://egyptianchronicles.blogspot.fr/2013/09/sami-anan-and-presidency-let-games-start.html

Al Watan newspaper claimed that Former Chief of Staff and deputy commander of SCAF Sami Anan announced today that he was going to for presidency in Egypt. (...)

According to Al Watan General Anan announced this during some public conference in North Coast attended allegedly by thousands of Matrouh’s tribesmen. It is quite interesting because Matrouh is considered an Islamist voting bloc, a Salafist voting bloc to be accurate.

Hours later Al Masry Al Youm claimed that it spoke to the general and he denied that he intended to run for presidency !! He did not explain the reason behind that meeting though.

When I made a quick search online, I found interesting news like for instance how in several shady news websites on how the his support campaign claim that he was the main financier of Tamaroud campaign and how he reconciled with the so-called revolutionary youth.

    (...)
So yes we got two possible presidential hopeful : Sami Anan and Abdel Fatah El Sisi.

“Sources to Al-Watan: Al-Qaradawi Left as Previously Planned, Was Not Asked To Leave”]

An official source at the International Islamic Charitable Organization denied what had been circulated that board member Dr Yusuf al-Qaradawi left Kuwait upon request by official authorities.

The source confirmed to Al-Watan that Al-Qaradawi left with his family at 2030 [1730 gmt] on Monday, 16 September, as already pre-planned, and that he did not change his booking to an earlier date.

The source said to Al-Watan that in all the previous meetings Dr Al-Qaradawi did not stay long in the country due to his old age and his busy schedule.

The source affirmed that the organization did not receive any request from any government body asking for Al-Qaradawi to leave the country as was circulated on the social media websites; “we only knew about it from Al-Watan,” stressing that the airline booking had already been made earlier.

“Walid al-Tabtaba’i Tells Al-Watan: I am planning to fight in Syria.”

Former MP Walid al-Tabtaba’i has stated that he is planning to join the fighting raging in Syria alongside the Free Syrian Army [FSA] to liberate this country, as he put it, from the armies of Iran, Hezbollah, and Bashar al-Asad.

In a statement to Al-Watan, Al-Tabtaba’i reported that he had attended the meeting held by the Union of Muslim Scholars in Cairo, which called for waging jihad with oneself and one’s money and fighting against the tyrants.

Al-Tabtaba’i will take part, as he said, in organizing convoys from outside Syria for jihad. He stressed that he will personally join in the convoys for the purpose of fighting.

Commenting on a picture posted on certain websites showing him wearing military uniform, Al-Tabtaba’i said that the snap goes back to last September, when he visited the liberated areas in northern Syria, more specifically Idlib Governorate.

During this visit, Al-Tabtaba’i met with FSA commanders in liberated Syrian territory that the warplanes of Bashar al-Asad were bombarding at the same time.

The purpose of that meeting was reportedly to “discuss the ways to sever the Egyptian relations with Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah because of their continuous attacks against the Sunni people and the fact that Iran has been rocking the security of the Arab, Islamic, and Sunni countries.”

“The sources indicated that “President Morsi showed a great deal of responsiveness with the ideas of his guests… He also told the delegation of the clerics about Iran’s repeated attempts at infiltrating Egypt culturally, financially and religiously.” The sources said that “during the meeting, President Morsi was completely convinced with the ideas of the clerics including the need to confront the Iranian threats and its politics of expansion in addition to the need of halting the politics of exporting the [Iranian] revolution…” Morsi also “revealed that the Iranian Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, made some tempting financial offers to Morsi during an earlier meeting in return of facilitating the Iranian actions in Egypt on the media related, cultural, and religious levels.”

  • Fifty injured in attack on Saudi student protest: report
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/50-students-hurt-attack-saudi-student-protest-report

Over 50 female Saudi students were injured when security guards and Saudi police attacked a peaceful protest in a university, a local newspaper has claimed.

The 1,000-strong all-women protest, which was calling for an end to corruption and ill-treatment at the King Khaled University (KKU) in Abha, was attacked on Wednesday by security services wielding batons, the Al Watan newspaper said.

The students had begun a protest on Tuesday to criticize the university management for allowing the campus to deteriorate and against ongoing corruption in the country.

Security forces stormed the campus on Wednesday and attacked the protesters with batons, fire extinguishers, and water hoses, activists said.
