Human rights advocates accuse her of condoning a military campaign designed to drive the Rohingya, a Muslim minority in this majority-Buddhist nation, off their land in Rakhine State and out of the country. The United Nations human rights agency has said the abuses may amount to crimes against humanity.
The use of helicopter gunships and the “wholesale burning of villages” amounted to “gross violations of human rights,” said Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and an early supporter of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi.

The ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya is visible from space

The imagery below comes from Planet, a satellite imaging company that photographs the entire landmass of earth daily. It shows #Kutupalong refugee camp, spreading over an area a little larger than ten square miles. The left side of the photo is Bangladesh; the right side, Myanmar.

For nearly 200 years, Rohingya Muslims have lived alongside Buddhists in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state, despite generations of ethnic tensions. A military crackdown after an Aug. 25 Rohingya militant attack, caused around 655,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh, and has left much of northern Rakhine burnt-out and empty. A Myanmar military investigation released on Nov. 13 cleared security forces of all accusations of atrocities. The United Nations has denounced the crackdown as a classic example of ethnic cleansing. Myanmar’s military did not respond to Reuters’ questions about its role in the atrocities against the Rohingya described in this graphic.

New satellite imagery reveals the Burmese government has been bulldozing scores of depopulated Rohingya villages in northern Rakhine State, Human Rights Watch said today. The United Nations Security Council, the UN and its agencies, and Burma’s donors should demand the Burmese government immediately halt the demolition of Rohingya villages, which should be treated as crime scenes that should be preserved until the UN Fact-Finding Mission is given access to the area to carry out investigations.
