It’s that time of year again: the season for introspection & hibernation. ’Round these parts, we’re apt to hunker down with our favorite records on the turntable and reflect on another year gone by. 2024 was filled with, to borrow a phrase from the late, great Townes Van Zandt, highs, lows, & in-betweens.

But let’s focus on the highs today, shall we? Here at Light in the Attic, we have a long-standing tradition of celebrating the year’s end with our top ten (or twelve, or fifteen) things that really got us going this year. The things that turned us on, changed our lives, and blew our minds, be it music, libations, places, faces, or experiences. So without further ado, we give you our 2024 End of Year Lists!

Saxophonist #Peter_Brötzmann is well-know for his fierce marathon performances with a wide range of collaborators. His best-known album, 1968’s Machine Gun, is regarded as a landmark in European #free_jazz. On his latest solo album, I Surrender Dear, recorded in a Vienna studio in 2017, he journeys deep into the past—jazz’s, and his own. Sticking to the tenor sax for the album’s full 57 minutes, he explores standards which have been recorded dozens if not hundreds of times since the 1930s and ’40s, like the title track (which appears in two versions), “Lover Come Back To Me,” “Con Alma,” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” He also turns out versions of slightly later pieces, like the 1957 Sonny Rollins composition “Sumphin,” Dutch pianist Misha Mengelberg’s “Brozziman,” and two of his own compositions, “Dark Blues” and “Churchsong.”

Born in 1936 in the Ghanaian city of Cape Coast, Ebo Taylor is a living avatar of two great West African musical traditions: Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian Afrobeat.

Highlife, with its bright, ecstatic, guitar-driven melodies, encompasses the joy and optimism of the African people in the face of global anti-Blackness. On the other hand, the driving funk rhythms and revolutionary themes of Afrobeat characterize the emotional temperature and political ambitions of Black people around the world. By expressing all of these complex sociopolitical dynamics, highlife and Afrobeat represent two musically distinct but historically interrelated sides of the African cultural experience.

Despite its tiny size, the island republic of São Tomé and Príncipe boasts a rich and diverse blend of traditions and cultures. Located a few hundred kilometers off the Western coast of Africa, opposite Gabon, the small volcanic islands were uninhabited before the Portuguese “discovered” them in 1471, but were soon settled by a ragtag bunch of explorers, traders, and convicts. Later, the Portuguese brought thousands of enslaved Africans to the islands to work on the sugar, coffee, and cocoa plantations. As a result São Tomé and Príncipe’s musical tapestry is a rich and complex one that has much in common with other African Lusophone countries, but is set apart by its own idiosyncratic elements.

Chumbawamba is as punk as it GETS. No, really: Chumbawamba, the band that was on MTV and the radio every 37 seconds, the band that had the one-hit-wonder jam “tubthumping” about drinking whisky and getting knocked down, the band that was played at your junior prom, was actually rooted in anarcho-politics and wrecking the system the entire time that they enveloped pop consciousness. In fact, they had been pumping out the #anarcho_punk tunes and supporting direct action measures for 15 years before their massive smash!

By blending elements of punk, folk, dance, and pop into a singular racket, they established a distinctive sound with disruptive appeal that snuck into the mainstream without anyone noticing their anarcho-punk bona fides before it was too late! And now, 2022 marks four decades since the band first began their radical mission and you can still hear “tubthumping” on the radio…and most people still don’t know about the band’s punk rock platform.

So, to mark the group’s 40th anniversary, Bandcamp spoke to Chumbawamba’s Dunstan Bruce, Danbert Nobacon, Alice Nutter, and Boff Whalley about the band’s early anarcho days.

If there were ever a Chumbawamba manifesto, it would read in the inconsistent, contradictory language of the Dadaists - part strident belligerence and part foolishness. This ending is no different; it comes almost as much of a surprise to us as it may do to you. Always more clown than politician, the band trips over its outsize feet and performs its final tumble.

Nearly 50 years ago, a queer, Marxist country band out of Seattle released one of the rawest and most revolutionary records of its era or any other. Lavender Country’s eponymous 1973 debut is the earliest known album solely devoted to reflecting gay and lesbian lives in wake of Stonewall. Self-released and distributed almost exclusively through mail order because no retail outfits besides a few underground gay bookstores would dare carry it, Lavender Country sold out its 1000-copy pressing and then vanished from history. In the early ’10s, “Cryin’ These Cocksucking Tears” resurfaced on YouTube, prompting the album’s 2014 reissue on Paradise of Bachelors—and now Don GIovanni Records has released Blackberry Rose, a similarly bold sequel almost 40 years in the making.
