Cigna plays God with your health. The company refuses to cover medical expenses for treatments other insurance companies have covered for years. Cigna does not consider how well your chronic conditions have been managed in the past, or what your doctor may order to monitor your condition. I’ve had rheumatoid arthritis for years, and under United and Blue Cross coverage was able to receive the treatments I need to manage my condition well. My husband has a severe case of myasthenia gravis that we have been able to manage with Blue Cross and United. Cigna does not care if people suffer; nor do the company’s doctors respect their highly reputable colleagues in the field of medicine. The doctors spend no time understanding your medical history; they simply follow standard black and white written protocols, without regard for patients’ well-being.

Carl Icahn Cigna: Billionaire Slams Express Scripts Deal | Fortune
    ▻http://fortune.com/2018/08/07/carl-icahn-cigna-express-scripts

“Purchasing Express Scripts may well become one of the worst blunders in corporate history, ranking up there with the Time Warner/AOL fiasco and General Electric’s long-running string of value destruction,” wrote Icahn, citing one of the most heavily criticized mergers of the past few decades. Icahn reportedly has acquired a “sizable” stake in Cigna, according to the Wall Street Journal, but the precise extent of that stake is unclear.

Icahn also mentioned the specter of Amazon entering the prescription drug business as a key reason why the Cigna-Express Scripts merger would amount to a “$60 billion folly,” adding that recent federal government actions scrutinizing the largely opaque benefits management industry are also a major red flag. PBMs have been accused of being one of the key reasons why prescription drug prices remain so high.

“When Amazon starts to compete as we believe they will, with their 100 million Prime users and scale distribution system, they will have no trouble breaking into the so called ‘ecosystem.’ With lower prices, the beneficiary will be American consumer, not the owners of Express Scripts,” wrote Icahn in an underlined section of the letter. Icahn also disclosed that he has taken a short position on Express Scripts, expecting the stock to fall.

The insurance industry gives lucrative commissions and bonuses to independent brokers who advise employers. Critics call the payments a “classic conflict of interest” that drive up costs.

#Amazon Not Paying Federal Income Taxes on $11.2 Billion Profits | Fortune

But even though Trump previously blasted Amazon for its limited state taxes—a single presidential tweet caused the company’s shares to fall by 9%—ITEP notes that its non-existent federal tax payment is a result of the Trump Administration’s corporation-friendly tax cuts. The think tank writes that the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act not only decreased corporate tax rates from 35% to 21%, but it also didn’t close “a slew of tax loopholes that allow profitable companies to routinely avoid paying federal and state income taxes on almost half of their #profits.”

Cape Town, South Africa to become first city in the developed world to run out of water
    By Genevieve Leigh
    29 January 2018

Authorities in South Africa’s drought stricken city of Cape Town are predicting that only 74 days are left until it becomes the first major city in the developed world to run out of water. The countdown to what is being called “Day Zero” is based on calculations for when the water supply in the dams will collectively drop below 13.5 percent, rendering the water system unusable.

Commentary: Cape Town Is Running out of Water. Could More Cities Be Next?

After more than three years of severe drought, Cape Town, a city of nearly 4 million people, is running out of water. “#Day_Zero”—the day city officials estimate the water system will be unable to provide drinking water for the taps—is less than three months away, and substantial rains are not expected before then.

Cholera Is Slaughtering Yemen and We’re Letting It Happen, by Laurie Garrett | Fortune.com
    ▻http://fortune.com/2017/07/20/cholera-is-slaughtering-yemen-and-were-letting-it-happen
    ▻https://fortunedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/gettyimages-815606282.jpg?w=720

This is the worst #cholera epidemic in modern history, and it has already spread well beyond the borders of Yemen, though neighboring nations decline to officially report “cholera,” preferring the ambiguous phrase, “acute watery diarrhea.” Even the new director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, plays the name game (…)

Confronting this catastrophe commands honesty: Cholera is now rampant not only in Yemen, but South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, and in refugee camps across the Middle East. Last month, the disease broke out in a luxury hotel in Nairobi, sickening attendees to a health conference. By that time, UNICEF head Anthony Lake said, the #Yemen disaster was growing by 5,000 new cases per day—a pace it has since well exceeded. The true toll may well reach half a million before July ends, and the agony is evident everywhere one looks.

The horrible irony is that cholera is spreading primarily because Saudi Arabia and its Gulf state allies have been bombing Yemen’s infrastructure to smithereens for months, rendering every water supply contaminated. The reluctance of Ethiopia and other cholera-afflicted nations to truthfully state their health plights is due to the same countries’—Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies—policies of boycotting all trade and food from nations that admit to having the disease. And historically the greatest scourge of the annual Hajj is—you guessed it—cholera.

Fraud in #Silicon_Valley : Startups Show Their Unethical Underside
    ▻http://fortune.com/silicon-valley-startups-fraud-venture-capital
    ▻https://fortunedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/silopener3_web.png?w=820&h=570&crop=1

Silicon Valley has always seen itself as the virtuous outlier, a place where altruistic nerds tolerate capitalism in order to make the world a better place. Suddenly the Valley looks as crooked and greedy as the rest of the business world. And the growing roster of scandal-tainted startups share a theme. Faking it, from marketing exaggerations to outright fraud, feels more prevalent than ever—so much so that it’s time to ask whether startup culture itself is becoming a problem.

Google’s Waymo Pressures Uber Self-Driving Cars in Court

The ride-services company is contesting a lawsuit by Alphabet Inc’s self-driving car unit, Waymo, which accused former Waymo engineer and current Uber executive Anthony Levandowski of taking technical secrets from Waymo and using them to help Uber’s self-driving car development.
If it were proven that Levandowski and Uber conspired in taking the information, that could have dire consequences for Uber, say legal and ride-hailing industry experts. Uber’s $68 billion valuation is propped up in part by investors’ belief it will be a dominant player in the emerging business of self-driving cars.

Bose Headphones Secretly Collected User Data - Lawsuit | Fortune.com

The audio maker Bose, whose wireless headphones sell for up to $350, uses an app to collect the listening habits of its customers and provide that information to third parties—all without the knowledge and permission of the users, according to a lawsuit filed in Chicago on Tuesday.

According to the complaint, Bose created detailed profiles of customers’ listening histories and habits, and shared it with marketing companies, including a San Francisco firm called Segment whose website offers to “collect all or your customer customer data and send it anywhere.”

Last month, for instance, a “smart sex toy” maker called We-Vibe agreed to pay around $3.75 million to settle claims its app had illegally collected information about how its customers used the product.
According to Jay Edelson, the privacy lawyer who filed the Bose lawsuit, companies should not be able to help themselves to consumer data just because they can.
“Companies need to be transparent about the data they take and what they are doing with it, and get consent from their customers before monetizing their personal information,” said Edelson.

Bitcoin : Price in Jeopardy After SEC Bitcoin ETF Decision | Fortune.com
    ►http://fortune.com/2017/03/10/bitcoin-price-etf-winklevoss-approval
    ▻https://fortunedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/493353504.jpg?w=720

For a fleeting moment at about 8:27 a.m.—more than an hour before the U.S. stock market even opened—the price of Bitcoin spiked more than 10% from the day before. The blockchain-based virtual currency briefly touched a new record price of $1325, continuing its recent surge amid anticipated SEC approval of the first Bitcoin ETF. A week ago, Bitcoin even surpassed the price of gold.

But in a reminder of just how fickle the market for such newfangled assets can be, just after 4 p.m. Friday, the Bitcoin price took a U-turn and plummeted to lows not seen in months, dipping below $1000 to as low as $980, after Bitcoin investors received some bad news from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. That’s a 35% swing in the Bitcoin price in the span of a day.

Bitcoin buyers were hoping that the so-called cryptocurrency, created through digital “mining,” would soon become available on the open stock market in the form of an exchange-traded fund (ETF). That way, mainstream investors could purchase Bitcoin as easily as they can now buy Snap (snap, -2.69%) stock following Snapchat’s IPO, theoretically pushing the Bitcoin price higher.

Bitcoin : Price in Jeopardy After SEC Bitcoin ETF Decision | Fortune.com
    ►http://fortune.com/2017/03/10/bitcoin-price-etf-winklevoss-approval

Bitcoin buyers were hoping that the so-called cryptocurrency, created through digital “mining,” would soon become available on the open stock market in the form of an exchange-traded fund (ETF). That way, mainstream investors could purchase Bitcoin as easily as they can now buy Snap stock following Snapchat’s IPO, theoretically pushing the Bitcoin price higher.

But the SEC made a decision Friday to prevent the proposed ETF, the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust, from joining a stock exchange, citing “concerns about the potential for fraudulent or manipulative acts and practices” in Bitcoin trading. The sponsors of the ETF, the Winklevoss twins known for their controversial role in the founding of Facebook (FB, +0.40%)), had proposed that the Bitcoin-only fund would trade like a regular stock under the ticker symbol “COIN.”

Or consider the strategy of Sean Everett, an entrepreneur specializing in artificial intelligence who recently launched a very small hedge fund called the Base Code fund. Last week, Everett sold all of his stocks in the fund as well as in his personal accounts, including Apple, Nvidia and Amazon stock.

Instead, Everett says he will invest a third of his assets directly in Bitcoin, a third in Ethereum (another type of cryptocurrency that is cheaper than Bitcoin but has surged even more recently), and keep the rest in cash. “Now that gold is the same price as bitcoin, we believe that an investor will have a choice between the two and might end up choosing things like crypto during the next market downturn,” Everett says.

This Chart Shows How Quickly Wind Power Has Caught On

Yes, wind power is “green,” but it didn’t become a force on the energy landscape until it also became cheap. Over the past decade, that has begun to happen, thanks to a combination of improvements in technology and federal and state tax incentives. As Stephen Gandel and Katie Fehrenbacher report this week in Fortune, the average cost of wind energy dropped by about a third between 2008 and 2013; in some parts of the country, it’s the cheapest electricity source available. Not coincidentally, as the chart below shows, wind’s share of renewable-energy output has soared. The Department of Energy expects wind to generate 10% of America’s electricity by 2020, up from about 7% today. (By comparison, coal and natural gas today each account for about a third.)

This Is Some Very Bad News for #Fast-Food Eaters
    ▻http://fortune.com/2016/04/13/fast-food-industrial-chemicals

An analysis of people who ate fast food over the previous 24 hours found that they had elevated levels of #phthalates, a chemical used to make plastics more pliable, reported Bloomberg.

The study by researchers at the George Washington University looked at federal nutrition survey data 2003 to 2010 from more than 9,000 people, who provided urine samples and a log of what they ate over a 24 hour period. The urine samples were analyzed for byproducts and two distinct industrial chemicals were linked with higher fast-food consumption: DEHP and DiNP, two types of phthalates.

Hanjin Ships Get Stranded in High Seas, Roiling Supply Chain - Bloomberg
    ▻http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-09-01/hanjin-s-ships-get-stranded-in-high-seas-roiling-supply-chain

Hanjin Shipping Co.’s vessels are getting stranded at sea after the South Korean container mover filed for court protection, roiling the supply chain of televisions and consumer goods ahead of the holiday season.
LG Electronics Inc. is trying to find new carriers for its goods, the world’s second-largest manufacturer of televisions said. Shipments through Hanjin account for between 15 percent and 20 percent of LG’s deliveries to America. Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., the nation’s second-biggest container line, stepped in, saying it plans to add 13 more vessels to ease the squeeze.

Marooned Hanjin vessels spark shipping crisis | Daily Mail Online
      ▻http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-3770319/Marooned-Hanjin-vessels-spark-shipping-crisis.html

“Forty-five of our 144 vessels are unable to operate in the normal fashion in some 10 countries,” a Hanjin spokesman told AFP.

“Some of them are being impounded, others being barred from docking or discharging,” he said.

Hanjin’s vessels, sailors and cargo are stuck in a maritime limbo as ports, wary they will not be paid for their services, refuse to let them dock, as well as refusing to handle or free cargo already landed.

Also effected are ships not owned by Hanjin but contracted by it or those belonging to its alliance members, along with cargo and containers on board those vessels.

US retailers, bracing for fall-out from Hanjin’s woes as they stock up for the crucial Christmas holiday sales season, have asked Washington to step in and help resolve a growing crisis, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

10 Hanjin vessels were either seized or denied access at Chinese terminals in Shanghai and Tianjin over the past 48 hours, according to local media reports, with another vessel seized in Singapore earlier the week.

An estimated 540,000 containers are expected to face delivery delays, according to the reports.

Hanjin bankruptcy causes global shipping chaos, retail fears | Daily Mail Online
      ▻http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-3770081/Hanjin-bankruptcy-causes-global-shipping-chaos-retail-fears.html

Three Hanjin container ships, ranging from about 700 feet to 1,100 feet (213 meters to 304 meters) long, were either drifting offshore or anchored away from terminals on Thursday. A fourth vessel that was supposed to leave Long Beach on Thursday morning remained anchored inside the breakwater.

The Seoul-based company said Friday that one ship in Singapore had been seized by the ship’s owner. Hanjin Shipping spokesman Park Min did not confirm any other seizures.

As of Friday, 27 ships had been refused entry to ports or terminals, she said.

That left cargo headed to and from Asia in limbo, much to the distress of merchants looking to stock shelves with fall fashions or Christmas toys. “Someone from the garment industry called earlier today asking: ’How long is this going to go on, because I’ve got clothing out there,’” Louttit said.

U.S. Firms Take Action Against Hanjin As Vessels Are Denied at Ports
      ▻http://fortune.com/2016/09/02/hanjin-shipping-ports-us-firms

Roughly half of Hanjin Shipping’s container vessels have been blocked from ports since the South Korean firm’s collapse, putting manufacturers and their customers increasingly on edge about the fate of cargo and spikes in freight costs.

Woes for world’s seventh-largest container shipper have only deepened since its banks withdrew support and it filed for court receivership this week. One vessel has also been seized by a creditor in Singapore while firms in the U.S. have launched legal action against Hanjin to seize vessels and other assets over unpaid bills.

The potential for cargo to be stranded, perhaps indefinitely, is unnerving for many – particularly as industry insiders and analysts believe that Hanjin has little chance of being rehabilitated and its assets will eventually be liquidated.
      […]
Hanjin accounts for 7.8% of trans-Pacific trade volume for the U.S. market and has a global client base. Of 8,281 owners of goods to be transported as of late August, 847 were South Korean firms, according to government data.

Here’s Why Apple Acquired Health Startup Gliimpse
    ▻http://fortune.com/2016/08/22/apple-acquires-gliimpse

Apple has acquired Gliimpse, a personal data collection startup, for an undisclosed sum. The move, which was earlier reported by Fast Company, should bolster Apple’s broader ambitions to expand its presence in the health industry.

Gliimpse was founded in Silicon Valley in 2013. According to its website, the company’s goal is to create “personalized and shareable medical records” for every American across the country. The goal was to offer a product that puts a person’s personally identifiable information—everything from a glucose number to Potassium levels—into a digital archive that both they and their doctors can access.

“You control who sees what and for how long,” the company explains on its website. “Share with physicians. Gain proxy access to aging parent’s data. Get your kid’s immunizations to the school nurse. Even Donate Your Data (DYD) to help find global cures.”

So does this even matter? After all, throwing light on #lobbying conducted by Google (or any other big company) is a good thing. But as I’ve argued before, the practice of “#astro-turfing” — when wealthy companies or individuals pose as a grass-roots group like the so-called “campaign for accountability” project — can confuse news and public relations, and foster public cynicism.

Now #Yahoo Shareholders Want to Know What Happens With #Alibaba Stake - Fortune
    ▻http://fortune.com/2016/07/26/yahoo-shareholders-alibaba

Most of Yahoo’s $36.4 billion market value is derived from its 15% stake in Chinese online commerce company Alibaba Group Holdings and its 35.5% stake in joint venture Yahoo Japan. These are not included in Yahoo’s deal with Verizon.

Investors will be hoping for a quick sale of these stakes, but Yahoo has been looking for years without success for a way to make money from the investments without incurring a huge tax bill. Yahoo declined to comment on potential scenarios on Monday.
