The right to asylum: Why Europe has to take in migrants fleeing persecution
Thousands of migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean this year attempting to reach Europe, including as many as 800 who died over the weekend when their ship capsized off the coast of Libya. Thousands more are probably going to drown before the end of this year. Many of the migrants who cross the Mediterranean — often without pilots or seaworthy boats — are Syrians fleeing their country’s civil war; others are Eritreans fleeing a brutal dictatorship that would have shot them if caught trying to escape.
