The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier arrived at a port in Crete on Monday after it had to leave the Middle East — and the war against Iran — when a fire broke out in its laundry area. But the massive ship’s problems run a lot deeper than that.

Delivered years late in May 2017, the Ford is the most expensive American warship ever built, at $13.2 billion.

The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford had to leave the Middle East after a laundry fire. A new Pentagon report says its problems go much deeper according to Bloomberg News.

Key systems like radar, weapons elevators, and jet launch systems may not work reliably, and the ship hasn’t been fully tested in real combat. It’s unclear if the ship can detect or intercept enemy aircraft, anti-ship missiles or small aircraft attacks.

It’s also the most expensive warship ever built at $13.2 billion, yet issues remain unfixed and it is not clear when these will be fixed.

The US aircraft carrier that left West Asia operations following a fire faces broader technical and operational issues, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, arrived at Crete’s Naval Support Activity Souda Bay in Greece on Monday for maintenance and repairs following operations in the Red Sea, the US Navy said.

The vessel’s departure from West Asia came after a fire broke out earlier this month in its main laundry area, prompting a large damage control response aboard the ship. US officials claimed the blaze was not combat-related and was contained, but reports indicated that more than 600 sailors were displaced from their sleeping quarters as a result of the incident.

      Pentagon concerned over operational readiness
Bloomberg reported that concerns surrounding the aircraft carrier range from minor issues to potentially serious flaws, based on a new assessment from the Pentagon testing office. Many of these issues emerged after the ship began combat testing in October 2022.

The report highlighted a lack of sufficient current test data to properly assess the carrier’s “operational suitability", including the reliability of key systems such as its jet launch and recovery system, radar, ability to sustain operations under enemy fire, and elevators used to transport weapons and munitions from the hold to the flight deck.

A recent Pentagon testing assessment further found that, nearly a decade after the ship’s delivery, there is still insufficient data to determine its “operational effectiveness” under realistic combat conditions.

      Deployment context and forced withdrawal
The USS Gerald R. Ford has been deployed for an extended period, having originally set sail in June 2025 and remaining at sea for roughly nine months, longer than the typical seven-month deployment.

Its operations have spanned multiple regions, including the Caribbean, to support US efforts to kidnap Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, and then redirected again to West Asia as support to the US as it prepared to launch its aggression on Iran.

What the report failed to mention was that on March 13, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said that the fire that occurred on the carrier was deliberately started by its crew.

According to a statement, the vessel, reportedly redeployed from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Oman to reinforce US forces, sustained a fire allegedly started deliberately by several US soldiers due to fear among the carrier’s crew.

Tensions in the region have escalated since the US and “Israel” launched a joint offensive on Iran on February 28. Iranian authorities said that more than 1,300 people have been martyred since the start of the war, including senior officials such as Leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei and top security official Ali Larijani.

Tehran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting “Israel”, as well as US military bases in Gulf countries. These strikes have resulted in casualties and infrastructure damage, successfully disrupting global markets and aviation.

Growing doubts are emerging within US forces over the war, with troops raising concerns about unclear objectives, rising casualties, and the danger of a ground invasion. Reports indicate increasing frustration and stress among troops, with some questioning their role and considering leaving the military.

IRGC to US 82nd: You will face fate of USS Gerald Ford
In a related context, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) earlier issued a direct warning to the US 82nd Airborne Division, cautioning that it could face the same fate as US aircraft carriers previously forced to withdraw under Iranian pressure.

Commenting on reports of an imminent US troop deployment to West Asia, the IRGC addressed American forces, stating: “Do you remember Gerald Ford and Abraham Lincoln?”

The statement referenced the withdrawal of US naval assets from the region following Iranian strikes and threats, signaling Tehran’s readiness to confront any new deployment.

The IRGC emphasized that the 82nd Airborne Division, one of the US Army’s most prominent rapid-response units, is being closely monitored as part of the evolving strategy.

UN experts on Tuesday called on “Israel” to immediately release detained Palestinian Doctor Hussam Abu Safiya from the Gaza Strip, warning that he faces torture, worsening health conditions, and serious violations of international law, Anadolu reported.

The statement, issued by UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Physical and Mental Health Tialeng Mofokeng, and Ben Saul, UN special rapporteur on protection of human rights while countering terrorism, said they had received reports that the doctor had been subjected to abuse and remains in critical condition.

Abu Safiya, the former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been abducted and detained by “Israel” since December 27, 2024, despite his status as a civilian medical practitioner.

The experts described his detention as “flagrantly arbitrary” and inconsistent with international standards, including the Mandela Rules, which guarantee detainees access to adequate medical care. • Iran signals upper hand as the US-Israeli war reaches third week | Al Mayadeen English

    Un point de vue iraien.

Iran is signaling that it is winning and has the power to impose a settlement on Washington that would cement Tehran’s influence over Middle East energy resources for decades, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ notes that Iranian officials appear to see time as working in their favor, suggesting they are not in a rush to end hostilities.

Despite repeated US and Israeli claims of successfully targeting missile launchers and stockpiles, the WSJ reported that Iran has retained the capacity to fire dozens of ballistic missiles and a large number of drones daily across the region.

In fact, the rate of attacks has increased in recent days compared with 10 days ago. Iranian strikes reportedly inflicted severe damage this week on US-linked energy infrastructure in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, while Iran’s own oil exports continued to flourish.

The WSJ added that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains contingent on Iranian permission, and that rising oil and gas prices are exerting pressure on the US administration to end the war.

    Low-cost, high-impact disruptions
The Wall Street Journal cited analyst Dina Esfandiary, who said that Iran has learned it can inflict large-scale disruption at relatively low cost.

“The Iranians aren’t ready to end the war because they have learned an important lesson: They can, comparatively easily and cheaply, cause a lot of damage and disruption. They now want the whole world to learn that lesson, too,” she told the newspaper.

Iranian leaders appear to be leveraging this capability to set conditions for a ceasefire. As cited by WSJ, Esmail Rezaei, spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s foreign affairs and defense committee, stated after a recent meeting with military commanders that any talks with the US are currently off the agenda, as Tehran “focuses on punishing the aggressors.” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, has described Iran’s position in the war as comparable to Vietnam for the US.

The Wall Street Journal notes that Iran’s demands for ending the war reportedly include massive reparations from the US and its allies and the removal of American military forces from the region.

Iranian officials have also suggested transforming the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic international waterway, into an Iranian-controlled passage where ships would pay fees to transit.

Expediency Council member Mohammad Mokhber, advisor to the supreme leader on economic affairs, told Mehr News Agency that Iran intends to “turn its position from a sanctioned country to an enhanced power in the region and the world.”

US officials, experts, express doubt despite the facts
US officials and military experts, the WSJ reports, have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such an arrangement, highlighting the difficulty of US decision-makers coming to terms with the demands at this stage.

In a statement addressed to the Iranian nation, the IRGC extended greetings on the occasions of Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz, saying its forces carried out a “first crushing blow” at the start of the Iranian calendar year.

According to the statement, a rapid and sustained assault was carried out immediately following the previous wave of attacks. The operation targeted Tel Aviv, in the heart of the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as areas in Rishon LeZion, using “super-heavy, precision-guided Emad missiles,” multi-warhead Qadr missiles, and loitering munitions.

The IRGC also reported that additional targets listed in its aerospace division’s target list, including US military bases at Ali Al Salem in Kuwait, Al-Kharj in Saudi Arabia, and Victory in Iraq, were struck again using attack drones and heavy missiles as part of a “phased attrition campaign.”

The statement added that, following three weeks of monitoring and assessing enemy vulnerabilities, IRGC intelligence and operational commanders have introduced new offensive tactics and more advanced systems in this latest round of “impact-oriented operations.”

Iran has signaled it may allow Japanese-linked vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, in what appears to be a calibrated move aimed at maintaining essential energy flows for non-hostile states while continuing to impose pressure on countries involved in the ongoing aggression against it.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a phone interview with Kyodo news that Tehran is prepared to facilitate transit for Japanese ships, with discussions already underway with Tokyo. The development comes as maritime traffic through the strategic waterway remains severely limited following weeks of US-Israeli attacks on Iran, which triggered a broader regional confrontation and prompted Tehran to impose restrictions on shipping.

Iran has maintained that the Strait of Hormuz has not been universally closed, but rather restricted in response to an unprovoked war. Araghchi stressed this distinction, stating: “We have not closed the strait. It is open.”
