Palestinian unity government goes ahead

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas swore in a unity government in a major step toward ending a seven-year rift between rival factions Hamas and Fatah.

The two sides negotiated until the last minute on Monday over the composition of the cabinet. Hamas demanded that Abbas reverse a decision to remove the position of prisoner affairs minister from the government.

La mise en place de ce gouvernement aura été menacée jusqu’au dernier moment par un différend entre les nationalistes du Fatah et les islamistes du Hamas.

Les membres de ce cabinet de transition, composé de personnalités indépendantes et de technocrates, ont prêté serment devant le président Abbas lors d’une cérémonie à Ramallah, le siège de l’Autorité palestinienne, en Cisjordanie, retransmise à la télévision.

Trois d’entre eux qui vivent dans la bande de Gaza, que gouverne le Hamas depuis 2007, n’ont pu se déplacer, Israël ayant refusé de les laisser passer.

A Gaza, le Hamas a salué le gouvernement d’union de « tous les Palestiniens » et lui a apporté son soutien.

GAZA (Territoires palestiniens) - Une enfant palestinienne a été tuée et au moins six autres Palestiniens ont été blessés mardi dans des raids israéliens sur la bande de Gaza menés après un tir qui a tué un Israélien travaillant sur la frontière, selon des sources médicales.

Hala Abou Sabikha, 3 ans , a été tuée, et trois membres de sa famille ont été blessés, a précisé à l’AFP une source médicale dans le territoire palestinien gouverné par le Hamas.

Un porte-parole des services d’urgences du territoire palestinien dans la bande de Gaza, Achraf al-Qoudra, a indiqué que le bilan s’établissait à un mort et six blessés.

Le ministère de l’Intérieur du gouvernement du Hamas a précisé que la fillette avait été tuée dans un raid sur le camp de réfugiés de Maghazi, dans le centre de la bande de Gaza, qui a également blessé sa mère et son frère.

Une autre personne a été blessée par des tirs d’artillerie dans le centre du territoire, selon le ministère.

Les frappes israéliennes ont visé des sites à l’est de la ville de Gaza, ainsi que deux positions de la branche armée du Hamas, dans le centre du territoire palestinien et à Khan Younès, dans le sud, selon des témoins.

Salah Abu Latif, 22, is the man who was shot to death near the Gaza border fence on Tuesday. Abu Latif, who was shot by snipers while performing repair work to the border fence, is the first Israeli to die as a result of Gazan terror since Operation Pillar of Defense .

Abu Latif was working for a drilling company that was hired by the Defense Ministry to repair the fence. His grieving family told Ynet that Tuesday was his first day in his job.

“We received the news with great pain,” said Khaled Abu Layef, the victim’s uncle. “He was planning a life and was renovating his house as he was about to get married in the summer. He was a flower picked before its time.”

The uncle said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was to blame for the region’s security escalation due to the stalemate in the peace talks.

“Salah had his trust in the State, but it can’t be trusted. Good job Bibi, another flower was picked because of his stubbornness. We must put an end to this.”

Dozens of friends and family members of the deceased arrived at the emergency room in the Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba, enraged at the fact that no police or IDF representative had arrived to assist with releasing the body for burial.

“Why is this taking so long?” one of his relatives asked, adding that “if he weren’t Bedouin, everyone would help. He’s an Israeli citizen who was working in the border fence in a dangerous place.”

According to the family member, the incident was a testament to why the Bedouin public was disappointed with the Israeli establishment."

Majed Abu Latif, another uncle of the victim also added that the absence of officials was due to the fact that the victim was Bedouin and therefore inferior. “It’s disrespectful,” he said.
