Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Many of the approximately 150,000 (PDF) Rohingya who live in Malaysia came here hoping to be relocated to other countries through UNHCR programmes, but some of them have made Malaysia their home, despite the fact that they have no legal status and face many hardships as a result.
Many Rohingya refugee children are born in Malaysia, and remain stateless owing to the undocumented status of their parents.
According to Chia Wei, founder of The Berani Project, the main consequences of this undefined status and lack of identification documents is that the children are “cut off [from] the basic child’s rights to education [and] healthcare.”
The Berani Project is a social enterprise advocating and creating opportunities for the Rohingya communities and other marginalised people in Kuala Lumpur. Wei explains that “many [children] are forced to work from a young age to help their families”.

The legally blind photographer capturing refugee life
A legally blind Syrian refugee photographs life in the camps of Lebanon and his family’s new start in Canada.
But what Hani’s photos don’t reveal is that he is legally blind.
He struggles to recognise people standing more than 10 feet away from him and doesn’t see all colours. Photographing moving objects is difficult, so he mostly focuses on still subjects and has memorised more than 10 exposure settings.

Vivre à Gaza avec trois heures d’électricité par jour

Depuis le mois d’avril, le territoire palestinien, qui compte deux millions d’habitants, fait face à une crise énergétique sans précédent dûe aux dissensions entre le Hamas et Mahmoud Abbas.
Honteux sous titre qui exempte complètement Israël du rationnement en question, alors que l’article sous-entend pourtant qu’il n’y est pas pour rien :
Quant à la seule centrale électrique de Gaza, qui fournit en temps normal 23 % des besoins, elle est à l’arrêt depuis avril. Son manager général, Rafiq Maliha, est un homme massif, compétent, au rire nerveux.
« La situation est catastrophique, dit-il. Je travaille ici depuis 1994. C’est comme une boule de neige qui roule et grossit. Depuis l’aide d’urgence du Qatar et de la Turquie en janvier, assurant du fuel pour trois mois, Ramallah et Gaza se disputent au sujet des taxes payées sur ce fuel. Israël les a fixées à 300 %. »
La centrale a été bombardée en 2006, entraînant quatre mois de fermeture, puis en 2014, six mois de fermeture. Aujourd’hui, elle n’a aucune réserve de fuel, faute de capacité de stockage. Sa conversion au gaz naturel permettrait d’énormes économies, mais elle nécessiterait du temps et des investissements.
Une ligne à haute tension est aussi en projet avec Israël, mais la volonté politique fait défaut. Quand rien ne presse, le gouvernement israélien gère, plutôt que de prendre des initiatives. La demande énergétique à Gaza pourrait doubler d’ici à 2030, avertit la Banque mondiale.

  In September 2015, the president of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, King Abdullah of Jordan and David Cameron, then Prime Minister of the UK, met to discuss the so called Compact Model, to create jobs for refugees in Jordan. The Jordan Compact was agreed in early 2016 and a similar, but smaller scale Lebanon Compact followed.
  Was the Compact Model the win-win solution everyone has been waiting for? In this episode I talk to journalists Daniel Howden and Charlotte Alfred at Refugees Deeply. They have investigated the impact of the Compact Models in Jordan and Lebanon and found that what was meant to work in certain ways on paper, turned out quite differently in practice.

From Gambia to Italy: a refugee’s perilous journey
When Malick Jeng, 19, left Banjul, his hometown and capital of Gambia, on March 14, 2016, he never imagined the risks he would face on his way to Europe.
Malick crossed the desert in Mali inside an oil tank where he almost suffocated. He was later held in a Libyan prison, where he witnessed the murder of some of his fellow travellers and only gained his freedom thanks to a payment sent by his family.
On the night of August 1, after a month in Libya, he was transferred by smugglers to a beach near Tripoli, where he clambered into a rubber boat with 120 people on board to cross the Mediterranean. Hours later, the rescue vessel Iuventa, from the NGO Jugend Rettet, rescued them 20 nautical miles off the Libyan coast.
Malick was first transferred to Catania, Sicily, and later to Biella, a city in the north of Italy, where he has lived ever since, in a temporary reception centre called Hotel Colibri - an old hotel that had been closed for 10 years. The hotel was turned into a reception centre for migrants in August 2016. The cooperative that manages it, which has other centres in the area, receives 35 euros ($37.7) per migrant per day from the Italian state. Malick and other migrants receive their basic necessities, including three meals per day and a bed, as well as monthly pocket money of 75 euros ($80.8).
Malick is awaiting a response to his asylum application to find out if he can begin a life in Europe legally, as a refugee, or whether he will be forced to keep fighting for his future.

In 1999, when Myanmar was ruled by a repressive military regime, the government laid out a plan for development which included an aggressive expansion of palm oil in its southern provinces.
Since then, 44 large-scale palm oil companies have transformed 350,000 hectares of pristine jungle into a series of plantations.
Although the inception of the palm oil sector in Myanmar has provided regular jobs to unskilled labourers seeking regular employment and is increasing the internal supply of cooking oil within the country, the industry at large is being criticised on a number of fronts.
Environmentalists decry the ecological devastation and habitat loss associated with clear cutting rainforest and implementing a monoculture system of palm oil.

When international donors and the Afghan government convene in Brussels next week, the EU secretly plans to threaten Afghanistan with a reduction in aid if the war-torn country does not accept at least 80,000 deported asylum seekers.

Meanwhile, the Afghan government is also struggling with internal turmoil, and has failed to revive the economy or produce jobs for the young who leave the country in droves.
It would be challenging for Afghanistan to absorb 80,000 deportations. So far, in 2016, about 5,000 Afghans have returned voluntarily from Europe.
“This is putting unreasonable pressure on the Afghan government, which is not able to respond to such numbers,” said Timor Sharan, senior analyst for the International Crisis Group in Afghanistan.
Afghans make up the second largest group of migrants arriving in Europe, with 196,170 applying for asylum (pdf) last year.
At the two-day summit in Brussels, which begins on 4 October, international donors are expected to roughly match the $4bn (£3bn) annually pledged at the 2012 Tokyo conference over the next four years.
The pressure on Afghanistan is part of a broader EU strategy of making aid to poor countries conditional on them accepting deported migrants.
The best known example is the €6bn deal (£5.2bn) offered to Turkey in exchange for taking back asylum seekers and improving border controls. Other targeted countries include Niger, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Lebanon and Libya. The EU has also considered similar deals with Eritrea and Sudan, the governments of which are accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

  It’s the world’s untold migration crisis. Every day, up to 1,000 dazed and confused Afghan migrants, some carrying serious injuries, arrive on buses from Iran at the remote Islam Qala border crossing. Over 250,000 have crossed since the start of 2016. They tell stories of theft, beatings, exploitation and abuse. Some labour migrants have been paid in heroin and are now addicted, cast off by their employers. Some are mere kids: teenagers turned breadwinners. There are single women, elderly people, and Afghans born as refugees in Iran. IOM and the Afghan Government help them to get back to their home towns, but most are going back to abject poverty, joblessness and the horrors of war.

  At a conference in Brussels this week, world powers including the EU, US and Japan pledged $15 billion towards development aid and peace building in Afghanistan over the next four years. The day before the start of the conference, the EU signed an agreement with the Afghan government allowing its member states to deport an unlimited number of the country’s asylum seekers, which the Afghan government are obliged to receive.

There are a total of 43 families living in tents in Pedion tou Areos park in central Athens, according to the Greek Refugee Forum.
The non-governmental organization said on Friday that a total of 202 refugees are living in the park. Of those, 103 are children.

Philippines’ generation of sex tourism children
Weekends are busy on Fields Avenue in Balibago. Young women greet meandering men and invite them into the bars that line the street. Known as the “supermarket of sex”, Angeles City’s red light district has fast become a top destination for sex tourism.
Male travellers from Asia, Australia, the US, Europe and the Middle East constitute the bulk of the arrivals at Clark Airport, a former US military airbase. From there, many flock to the bars and clubs of Fields Avenue - and to the impoverished young women who work there.
Acquiring their company for the night is straightforward. For a small fee, the men obtain what is known as an “early work release” that permits them to take the woman of their choice back to their hotel.

The battle for Beirut’s skyline

Civil activists have long lamented the government’s lack of concern over preserving Beirut’s architectural heritage, accusing it of prioritising lucrative real estate deals over the more expensive task of conserving the remaining Ottoman and French mandate-era buildings across the city.
The most recent statistic from 2013 showed that 80 percent of the buildings, originally listed as historical landmarks after the war ended in 1990, have since been destroyed.
Yet calls by NGOs such as Save Beirut Heritage and the Association for the Protection of Lebanese Heritage for the state to spend more money and time on the issue have largely fallen on deaf ears.
Instead, the task of keeping such houses from ruin and demolition has fallen to individuals and non-state actors.

  Libya’s coasts continue to be packed with migrants trying to leave the country for passage across the Mediterranean Sea.
  On May 18 European Union ministers, in response to large scale emergencies, decided to launch an air and sea mission in Libya that could destroy the human traffickers’ boats that transport people across the Mediterranean to Europe.
  Just last week the Libyan Coastguard rescued 700 migrants from five rafts with unsafe standards. These migrants have been detained in the Alguaiha detention centre, that currently holds 400 men, women, and children, many of whom are from Eritrea, Somalia and Niger.
  The men are held in group cells, each containing up to 60 people. They are allowed to exit their cells only to eat a meagre meal, always under the watchful eye of guards armed with plastic and metal batons.
  Al-Zawiyha detention centre, meanwhile, is located near Tripoli and houses 821 adult men and adolescent boys. They are also locked in large and unclean cells, each with as many as 100 people, without enough space to lay down at night.
  Many of the men are sick with scabies and malaria. Due to the war in Libya, it has become too risky for doctors to reach this isolated facility.
  Some of the detainees said they were held by the traffickers for three months in a cave, before they were able to depart for Europe.
  The raft broke shortly after they left the coast, they say. Though they lost everything during their initial attempt to reach Europe, many say they are planning to ask their families for money to try to cross the sea again.
  One detained migrant said that every attempt to cross the sea is a gamble with their lives; a gamble they are willing to make.
