On Friday 2nd May 2014, over 150 detainees went on hunger strike and staged a sit down protest in the exercise yard of Harmondsworth immigration removal centre - europe’s largest detention centre, located near Heathrow airport, London.
They signed a petition demanding access to legal aid, better medical care, travel documents for detainees who wanted to leave the UK voluntarily, and an end to the fast track system, whereby asylum seekers are immediately detained and held indefinitely while their asylum claim is being processed.
As day turned into night, the British immigration officials agreed to negotiate with the detainees on Tuesday.
Over the weekend, supporters rallied outside Harmondsworth to show solidarity with the people locked inside.
