28 jours plus tôt. Selon une étude publiée le 13 novembre dans la revue PLOS Computational Biology, l’augmentation du nombre de consultations sur les pages Wikipédia de certaines épidémies pourrait permettre de prédire le déclenchement d’une épidémie.

En analysant le déroulement de quatorze épidémies dans neuf pays entre 2010 et 2013, ils ont réussi à déceler une augmentation des requêtes dans les zones touchées près de quatre semaines avant le détection officielle de ces maladies. Probablement parce que les malades se renseignent sur le Web dès qu’ils remarquent les premiers symptômes.

Seul bémol : la méthode ne fonctionne pas dans les zones peu connectées ou pour des épidémies plus lentes comme celle du sida.

ith the Centers for Disease Control now forecasting up to 1.4 million new infections from the current Ebola outbreak, what could “big data” do to help us identify the earliest warnings of future outbreaks and track the movements of the current outbreak in realtime? It turns out that monitoring the spread of Ebola can teach us a lot about what we missed — and how data mining, translation, and the non-Western world can help to provide better early warning tools.

Earlier this month, Harvard’s HealthMap service made world headlines for monitoring early mentions of the current Ebola outbreak on March 14, 2014, “nine days before the World Health Organization formally announced the epidemic,” and issuing its first alert on March 19. Much of the coverage of HealthMap’s success has emphasized that its early warning came from using massive computing power to sift out early indicators from millions of social media posts and other informal media.

An algorithm on HealthMap, an international mapping tool that detects and tracks diseases, found Ebola, called a “mystery hemorrhagic fever,” just over a week before it spread, though the founders didn’t initially realize the importance of what they discovered.

Eight people reported the mysterious disease in March. It caught the HealthMap team’s attention, but they didn’t call out a massive issue until it was confirmed as Ebola on March 22.
