With the Covid-19 pandemic decimating live music and shuttering record shops, many artists have found merch and digital sales to be a last remaining financial lifeline as they confront a very real threat to their livelihoods. So, it’s more important than ever for fans to support musicians by purchasing from them directly. Today, Bandcamp is waiving our revenue share on all sales, and we’re being joined by many artists and labels coming together to support the music community in this time of unprecedented need.

On Friday, March 20th, Sub Pop and Hardly Art will be passing through 100% of revenue from digital sales on Bandcamp to our current artists!

As you are all undoubtedly well aware, working/touring artists are one of the many groups of people currently being hit especially hard by the social distancing requirements of 2020 pandemic reality. In an effort to direct some support their way, Sub Pop and Hardly Art are joining with Bandcamp (and a ton of other labels) to send additional, needed revenue directly to artists.

Following on the heels of their monumental Don’t Need Smoke to Make Myself Disappear 7”, Pissed Jeans drop album number 2 and their Sub Pop debut: Hope for Men (we like to think of it in the “mankind” sense). For those who found a glimmer of the stuff on the aforementioned single (two pressings of which have sold out), the album delivers more, and in abundance. That is to say, if classic, thick-as-glue punk bombast and Aussie sludge stoke the coals of your existence, you have found, not only your new favorite band, but a reason to get up in the morning.

Since 2004 the Jeans have spent many a night playing in their hometown, no-rules hellhole, Allentown’s legendary Jeff the Pigeon (RIP). Their first single, “Throbbing Organ” and album, Shallow (both on Parts Unknown) set many self-styled punk scholars’ hearts a-flutter. Songs like “Ugly Twin” sent jaws floor-ward by including a plaintive piano part in a bruiser of a song. Such touches abound on Hope for Men. The album is diverse, but the Jeans ain’t no dilettantes. Mixing volatility with humor is a damned hard thing to master in music. Pissed Jeans do it with smarts and poignancy. Consider the bar raised.

Like every Seattle band who became superstars when #grunge broke into the mainstream, #Soundgarden began as something much smaller and stranger. Before the major labels caught on and launched them to multiplatinum success, they were signed to Sub Pop, and then to Greg Ginn’s SST Records for debut full-length Ultramega OK. Even on that punk-driven indie label, Soundgarden was a square peg. Guitarist Kim Thayil had become an Iommi-worshiping conjurer of detuned, sludgy blues—punk in ethos, but far more of a metalhead in style. Thayil gave the band a sonic backbone that bridged the metal ’80s with the impending alt-rock boom of the ’90s. But the weapon that made them a mainstream force was singer Chris Cornell, who tragically passed away last week.
