Turkey to complete Syria border wall within 5 months, official says

A concrete wall being built to stop illegal crossings along the length of Turkey’s 900-km (560-mile) border with Syria will be finished by the end of February, an official at a Turkish state institution with knowledge of the project said on Wednesday.

Turkey’s new border wall to stop Syrian refugees

Now Turkish officials say that, within five months, Turkey will build a gigantic wall to seal off the entire 900-kilometer border it shares with Syria, aiming to stop illegal crossings and combat smuggling. A 200-kilometer stretch has already been completed after construction began in 2014.

Syrian border wall to be completed in 2017

Turkey will complete a 911-kilometer-long wall along its border with Syria in the first half of 2017, Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Işık said Nov. 2 during a visit to the border along with the commander of the Land Forces, Salih Zeki Çolak, and Hatay Gov. Erdal Ata.

Turkey-Syria border wall to be completed by end of September

A total of 731 kilometers (454 miles) of the border wall has already been finished, the official told the agency.

The remaining 97 km (60 miles) of the wall will be completed by the end of this month, the official added.

Guards at Turkey’s closed border with Syria are indiscriminately shooting at and summarily returning Syrian asylum seekers attempting to cross into Turkey, Human Rights Watch said today.

Syrians are fleeing heightened violence in Idlib to seek refuge near the Turkish border, which remains closed to all but critical medical cases. According to the UN, 247,000 Syrians were displaced to the border area between December 15, 2017 and January 15, 2018. Refugees who succeeded in crossing to Turkey, using smuggling routes, told Human Rights Watch that Turkish border guards shot at them and others while attempting to cross into Turkey. In some cases, Turkish border guards beat asylum seekers they detained and denied them medical assistance.

“Syrians fleeing to the Turkish border seeking safety and asylum are being forced back with bullets and abuse,” said Lama Fakih, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “As fighting in Idlib and Afrin displaces thousands more, the number of Syrians trapped along the border willing to risk their lives to reach Turkey is only likely to increase.”

En décembre dernier, la Turquie avait achevé près de 800 kilomètres sur les 911 kilomètres prévus d’une muraille destinée à sceller sa frontière avec la Syrie, consistant en un mur de béton et une palissade d’acier capables de résister à un tir de roquette. Les images satellite que Human Rights Watch a obtenues de la zone où les Syriens affirment avoir traversé avec des passeurs clandestins montrent des secteurs non encore murés.

Turkey installs 475 mile security wall on Syria border

Turkey has completed the construction of a 475 mile (764 kilometers) concrete wall along its border with Syria, according to a Turkish official on Saturday

TOKI, the state backed housing developer, built 350 miles of the wall, while the governorates of the border provinces built 125 miles, the official told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.

Ankara had launched the construction project in 2015 to build an 513 mile-long wall on the Syrian border, as part of Turkey’s measures to increase border security and combat smuggling and illegal border crossings.

Turkey shares a 566 mile border with Syria, which has been embroiled in a civil war since 2011.

The wall was sealed along Turkey’s border provinces of Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Kilis, Hatay, Mardin and Sirnak.
