The US Air Force (USAF) is to upgrade its Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bombers to “significantly” increase the type’s weapons payload, the service disclosed on 23 September.
The 1760 Internal Weapons Bay Upgrade (IWBU), as the enhancement is dubbed, will enable the B-52 to augment the 12 Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) it currently carries on exterior weapons pylons with a further eight carried internally.
According to the USAF, the 1760 IWBU (named after Military Standard 1760 which relates to aircraft wiring) involves reformatting the B-52’s existing internal Common Rotary Launcher so that the storage management overlay will be able to digitally communicate with the JDAM. This enhancement will also allow for the integration of future weapon systems, such as the JASSM-Extended Range missile and the MALD-J decoy, the air force noted.
