Britain refuses to help immigrants adrift in the Mediterranean because it could encourage more to flee North Africa

Ministers are withdrawing support for rescue operations that save thousands of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe, amid fears traffickers use them as a ‘taxi service’.

In the past year around 150,000 people making the treacherous crossing from North Africa, many in ramshackle boats, have been picked up by the Italian navy.

But Britain, along with other EU countries, is refusing to pay for further rescue missions due to concerns they encourage more migrants to attempt the journey.

Opting out of Mediterranean rescue condemns desperate migrants to death

The UK government is seeking to defend its decision not to support rescue missions for migrants making the dangerous crossing to Europe via the central Mediterranean. And even though Europe professes to be stepping up to the plate, the emphasis is now being placed on monitoring European waters rather than actually helping those in trouble.
