A group of Israel supporters have attacked anti-war protesters at UCLA university in Los Angeles in the US. The group was filmed carrying out assaults and using fireworks and pepper spray on demonstrators at the Gaza war protest encampment.

Footage from the early hours showed mostly male counter-demonstrators, many of them masked and some apparently older than students, throwing objects and trying to smash or pull down the wooden and steel barriers erected to shield the encampment.

Some screamed pro-Jewish comments as pro-Palestinian protesters tried to fight them off.

“They were coming up here and just violently attacking us,” said pro-Palestinian protester Kaia Shah, a researcher at UCLA.

“I just didn’t think they would ever get to this, escalate to this level, where our protest is met by counter-protesters who are violently hurting us, inflicting pain on us, when we are not doing anything to them.”

Demonstrators on both sides sprayed each other and fights broke out.

Another pro-Palestinian student protester, Sophia Sandino, said: “We had people (spraying) us, beating us with bats and sticks, throwing whatever they could to us and none of this law enforcement was here at all. So it’s kind of disappointing that we’re seen as the perpetrators here.”

Around 11 p.m., a group of masked counter-demonstrators made their way to the Royce Quad in the heart of campus and began to attack the encampment set up last week by demonstrators opposing the war in Gaza. They threw a firecracker into the encampment, tore down its outer walls, threw heavy objects at demonstrators and instigated direct physical confrontations. Those in the encampment were left to fend for themselves against a violent band of thugs intent on inflicting damage.

The incident marked a total systems failure by the university, the city of Los Angeles and the state of California.

Over the course of our hours on the front lines, I estimate that more than 90% of the verbal and physical instigation came from the agitated counter-demonstrators, a fair number of whom spoke Hebrew and appeared to come from outside campus. The anti-war group had yellow-vested personnel who maintained discipline and sought to de-escalate when the threat of violence arose.

But even they were greeted with insulting words from the other side, as were members of a small contingent of a local chapter of Standing Together who came bearing signs calling for peace and equality for Palestinians and Jews.

I do not know whether there was overlap between the counter-demonstrators on Sunday and those who provoked last night’s violence, who carried Israeli and American flags, as well as at least one Chabad flag celebrating “Mashiach,” or the Messiah. But the behavior of the two groups bore striking similarities, making it all the more unsettling that UCLA wasn’t better prepared.

That’s especially true because, on Sunday, I observed a contingent of university police officers standing passively a couple hundred yards from one of the main hot spots. When I went over to ask them why they weren’t helping to keep the peace, one officer told me that they were game-planning their strategy.

And no LAPD officers arrived to help us diffuse the situation over a period of more than two hours — even though we had been told that they were on their way.

That no police or skilled de-escalators intervened on Sunday was, at best, a bad mistake; a cohort of trained personnel could have made a big difference. That none appeared for hours Tuesday night, especially after observing the tension on Sunday, was unconscionable.

This piece by my @UCLA colleague, Prof. David Myers, accurately describes what I also witnessed on UCLA’s campus on Sunday. To keep the peace, we both put ourselves between some pro-Palestinian protesters (who were mostly disciplined and non-confrontational) and a small contingent of very aggressive and provocative pro-Israel counter-protesters. Meanwhile, campus security and LAPD largely stood by and looked on. It was clear then that outside agitators were looking to cause trouble, which is why there should have been more done to prevent the mob violence that took place last night or at least to quickly stop it.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, says the resolution failed to demand a ceasefire without “conditioning” it on the release of captives in Gaza, saying it “undermines the efforts to secure their release”.

“It is harmful to these efforts because it gives Hamas terrorists hope to get a ceasefire without releasing the hostages. All members of the council … should have voted against this shameless resolution,” he said.

“The resolution says that taking civilians is in violation of international law. Yet on the other hand, despite the fact that you know Hamas won’t listen to your calls and release the hostages, you demand a ceasefire. Take a moment and think about this moral contradiction,” he continued.

The res adopted by the UN today is for a ceasefire of only about 2 weeks, humanitarian aid, lawful treatment of detainees & release of hostages. Weak as it is, the U.S. is already undercutting it by saying (falsely) that the ceasefire is conditional & that the res is non-binding.

A convoy of 31 trucks carrying food entered northern Gaza on Wednesday, the Israeli military office that oversees Palestinian civilian affairs said.

The office, known by the acronym COGAT, said nearly 20 other lorries entered the north on Monday and Tuesday.

Associated Press footage showed people carrying sacks of flour from the distribution site.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the deliveries.

The UN was not involved, said a spokesman for the UN’s humanitarian co-ordination office, Eri Keneko.

One Palestinian man told Quds News Network the military attack was a “crime”.

“I have been waiting since yesterday. At about 4:30 this morning, trucks started to come through. Once we approached the aid trucks, the Israeli tanks and warplanes started firing at us, as if it was a trap.

“To the Arab states I say, if you want to have us killed, why are you sending relief aid? If this continues, we do not want any aid delivered at all. Every convoy coming means another massacre.”

The Zionist are deliberately starving Palestinians.

But this is even worse.

The killing today was not by chance. I do not believe that it was unintentional. The food deliveries were under Israeli controls. So were the troops who killed the Palestinians who tried to collect the ’aid’.

This is not the first time that a food convoy or aid distribution has been used by the Zionists to attract and then kill starving Palestinians.

This is an extremely brutal and cynical way to genocide them.

وقد حمّل الإعلام الحكومي في غزة الإدارة الأميركية والمجتمع الدولي والاحتلال الإسرائيلي المسؤولية عن المجزرة.

وقال المدير العام للمكتب الإعلامي الحكومي إسماعيل الثوابتة إن الاحتلال كان يعلم بوصول الضحايا إلى المنطقة للحصول على مساعدات، لكنه قتلهم بدم بارد.

من جانبها، دعت حركة المقاومة الإسلامية (حماس)، في بيان، مجلس الأمن الدولي وجامعة الدول العربية إلى الانعقاد العاجل واتخاذ ما يُلزم إسرائيل بوقف القتل الجماعي والتطهير العرقي في غزة.

كما حثت الحركة الدول العربية على الخروج من “مربع الصمت” إزاء ما يتعرض له الفلسطينيون من جريمة إبادة، ودعت الشعوب العربية والإسلامية وأحرار العالم إلى التظاهر بشكل واسع تنديدا بالمجزرة.

من جهة أخرى، قال وكيل الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة للشؤون الإنسانية مارتن غريفيث إنه يشعر بالفزع إزاء تقارير عن مقتل وإصابة المئات في أثناء نقل المساعدات غربي مدينة غزة.

في المقابل، أصدر جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي بيانا قال فيه إن حشودا من الفلسطينيين تجمعت و"نهبت" المساعدات الإنسانية لدى إدخالها على متن شاحنات إلى شمال قطاع غزة الليلة الماضية.

وأضاف البيان أن عشرات الفلسطينيين أصيبوا نتيجة الازدحام الشديد والدهس في أثناء احتشادهم حول الشاحنات المحملة بالمساعدات.

وذكر مصدر عسكري إسرائيلي أن مئات الفلسطينيين اقتربوا من القوات الإسرائيلية بطريقة “شكلت خطرا عليها”، وأن هذه القوات ردت بإطلاق النار، حسب ادعائه.

وقال بيان الجيش إن التحقيق جار في الحادثة التي وقعت عند دوار النابلسي بمدينة غزة.

في الوقت نفسه، وصف وزير الأمن القومي الإسرائيلي إيتمار بن غفير جنود الاحتلال الذين ارتكبوا المجزرة بالأبطال، وقال إنهم “تصرفوا بشكل ممتاز ضد الغوغاء الغزيين الذين حاولوا إيذاءهم”.

وأضاف -في منشور على منصة إكس- أن ما حدث يثبت أن إدخال المساعدات الإنسانية إلى غزة في ظل احتجاز إسرائيليين هناك “ليس مجرد جنون”، بل إنه “يعرض جنود الجيش الإسرائيلي للخطر”، وهو بمثابة الأكسجين لحركة حماس، حسب تعبيره.

وفي الولايات المتحدة، علق الرئيس جو بايدن على المجزرة بالقول إن “حادث المساعدات الغذائية في غزة سيعقّد المفاوضات بشأن الرهائن”.

وفي رده على سؤال عما إن كانت غزة ستشهد وقفا لإطلاق النار بدءا من الاثنين المقبل حسبما صرح بذلك سابقا، قال الرئيس الأميركي “ربما لا يكون يوم الاثنين”.

من جانبه، قال متحدث باسم مجلس الأمن القومي بالبيت الأبيض إن ما وقع في غزة “حادث خطير”، معربا عن تعازيه “لفقدان أرواح الأبرياء”.

وأضاف المتحدث أن الولايات المتحدة تقر بالوضع الإنساني السيئ في غزة، حيث “يحاول الفلسطينيون الأبرياء إطعام أسرهم”، مشيرا إلى أن الأمر “يسلط الضوء على أهمية توسيع تدفق المساعدات الإنسانية إلى غزة واستمرارها، ولا سيما من خلال وقف مؤقت محتمل لإطلاق النار”.

من جهة أخرى، نقل موقع أكسيوس عن مسؤول أميركي أن الولايات المتحدة طلبت من إسرائيل “توضيحات بشأن حادثة قافلة المساعدات في غزة”.

Guerre au Proche-Orient : à Gaza, lourd bilan après une distribution de vivres

Le Hamas annonce que plus de 100 personnes ont été tuées jeudi après que l’armée israélienne a ouvert le feu sur une foule qui entourait des camions d’aide humanitaire à Gaza City. Israël ne dément pas les tirs mais affirme que les morts ont été provoquées par des mouvements de foule.

Plus de cent Palestiniens ont été tués jeudi 29 février à Gaza pendant une distribution d’aide humanitaire qui a tourné au chaos, a annoncé le Hamas en accusant les soldats israéliens d’avoir ouvert le feu sur une foule affamée, alors que la guerre a déjà fait plus de 30 000 morts dans le territoire menacé de famine.

Des sources israéliennes ont confirmé que des soldats, se sentant « menacés », avaient tiré à balles réelles mais nié que ces tirs soient responsables de ce bilan. L’armée a fait état de « dizaines de morts et de blessés », bousculés ou piétinés par la foule qui a « encerclé les camions et pillé » les cargaisons.

Les détails précis de l’incident restent flous et il n’a pas été possible pour les journalistes de vérifier de manière indépendante les chiffres des victimes publiés.

Jeudi, un médecin de l’hôpital Al-Chifa de Gaza City, dans le Nord, a annoncé que les soldats avaient tiré sur « des milliers de citoyens » qui se précipitaient vers des camions d’aide. « Le bilan du massacre de la rue Al-Rashid à Gaza City s’élève désormais à 104 morts et 760 blessés », a déclaré le ministère de la santé du Hamas.

Des témoins ont raconté à l’AFP des scènes pendant lesquelles des milliers de personnes se sont précipitées vers des camions d’aide à un rond-point de l’ouest de la ville.

Après bientôt cinq mois de guerre, l’ONU estime que 2,2 millions de personnes, soit l’immense majorité de la population, sont menacées de famine dans la bande de Gaza, en particulier dans le Nord, où les destructions, les combats et les pillages rendent presque impossible l’acheminement de l’aide humanitaire.

Le ministère de la santé du Hamas avait annoncé tôt jeudi que « plus de 30 000 » personnes ont été tuées dans les opérations militaires israéliennes à Gaza depuis le début de la guerre le 7 octobre, après des bombardements dans la nuit qui ont fait 79 morts.

L’armée israélienne nie pour sa part avoir tiré en direction du convoi. Elle évoque « des dizaines de morts et de blessés (…) dans une bousculade ». Elle affirme aussi que des conducteurs des camions ont forcé le passage, en écrasant des civils. Elle reconnaît cependant que des soldats ont tiré sur des Gazaouis qui s’approchaient de leurs positions.

L’hôpital Al-Awda, l’un des établissements de la ville, a reçu 176 blessés, selon son directeur par intérim, le docteur Mohamed Salha. « Les blessures que nous avons observées étaient des blessures par balle, sur toutes les zones du corps, les mains, les jambes, l’abdomen ou la poitrine », décrit-il au Monde par téléphone. Il précise ne pas avoir constaté de blessures laissant penser à une bousculade.

En milieu d’après-midi, Mahmoud Basal, le porte-parole de la défense civile, l’une des organisations de secouristes de Gaza, a également affirmé au Monde que ses équipes n’arrivaient toujours pas à atteindre certains corps abandonnés sur place, « car les forces d’occupation [israéliennes] tirent sur tous ceux qui s’avancent vers cet endroit. Il y a aussi des blessés, nous essayons d’organiser une coordination [avec l’armée] pour aller les chercher ».
