Les bilans diffèrent. Mais il est maintenant sûr que l’évacuation des places occupées par les pro-Morsi au Caire a fait des victimes. Selon les dires de témoins, 17 morts seraient pour l’heure à déplorer - dont certaines personnes tuées par balles. Mais les Frères musulmans, eux, avancent des chiffres bien plus élevés : 250 morts et près de 5000 blessés.

Le pouvoir aurait interrompu tous les trains en Égypte.

Le ministre de la défense prétend que des tireurs ont tiré sur les forces de sécurité et tué un officier et des soldats, provoquant la riposte. (via Tayyar)

An AFP correspondent counted 43 bodies at a makeshift morgue at Rabaa al-Adawiya, adding that many appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.

There were no women or children among the dead, the correspondent said.

Gehad El-Haddad, Muslim Brotherhood spokesman, continues to revise his death toll estimate upwards. It now stands at 600. So far most reliable number is 43 dead, coming from AFP reporter in a morgue, although that will no doubt increase.

ALERTE - Egypte : au moins 124 manifestants pro-Morsi tués au Caire

LE CAIRE (Qahirah) - Au moins 124 partisans du président islamiste déchu Mohamed Morsi ont été tués mercredi sur l’une des deux places évacuées de force au Caire, a rapporté un journaliste de l’AFP qui a pu compter les cadavres dans trois morgues improvisées.

Ce bilan, sur la place Rabaa al-Adawiya, le QG des manifestants qui l’occupent depuis plus d’un mois, ne tient pas compte des morts éventuels sur l’autre sit-in des pro-Morsi au Caire, la place Nahda, ni de ceux d’autres affrontements en cours dans le pays. Les manifestants parlent, eux, de plus de 2.200 morts et 10.000 blessés, des chiffres impossible à confirmer de sources indépendantes.

The death toll, which stood at 525, according to the latest Health Ministry figures, makes Wednesday by far the deadliest day since the 2011 popular uprising that toppled longtime ruler and autocrat Hosni Mubarak - a grim milestone that does not bode well for the future of a nation roiled in turmoil and divisions for the past 2 ½ years.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled el-Khateeb put the number of the injured on Wednesday at 3,717.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which ousted President Mohammed Morsi hails, put the death toll at a staggering 2,600 and the injured at around 10,000 - figures that are extremely high in light of footage by regional and local TV networks, as well as The Associated Press.

Selon l’auteur, non seulement une insurrection est possible, mais elle est fortement désirée par les « anti-islamistes » comme moyen d’éradiquer politiquement les Frères Musulmans.

Those who nurture such eradicateur sentiment do not so much actually want to physically eradicate all Islamists as to provoke them into a situation where their political existence will be eradicated because they will have opted for violence. They are willing to endure that violence, even a return to the counter-insurgency of the 1990s, and sporadic sectarian and terrorist attacks, because they believe it will strengthen their camp and enable them to permanently block most Islamists from politics. This is why I believe I think that analyses (...) that argue that such an insurgency is not possible any more are wrong – not only is it possible, but it is desired .

Their thinking is cynical in the extreme, not unlike Bashar al-Assad’s push towards militarizing the political conflict he faced in 2011. They are willing to live with the violence, impact on the economy, and other downsides if it strengthens their own power and legitimacy. An Islamist camp that, as elements of it are apparently beginning to, sets fire to churches and attacks police stations is one that becomes much easier to demonize domestically and internationally. But it is also much more unpredictable than Egypt’s homegrown violent Islamist movements were in the 1980s and 1990s, because there is a context of a globalized jihadi movement that barely existed then, and because the region as a whole is turmoil and Egypt’s borders are not nearly as well controlled as they were then (and today’s Libya is a far less reliable neighbor than even the erratic Colonel Qadhafi was then.) 

In their strategy against the July 3 coup, the Brothers and their allies have relied on an implicit threat of violence or social breakdown (and the riling of their camp through sectarian discourse pitting the coup as a war on Islam, conveniently absolving themselves for their responsibility for a disastrous year) , combined with the notion of democratic legitimacy, i.e. that they were after all elected and that, even if popular, it was still a coup. On the latter argument, they may have gained some ground over time both at home and abroad. But on the former, they got things very, very wrong: their opponents will welcome their camp’s rhetorical and actual violence, and use it to whitewash their own.

RIYADH, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Saudi King Abdullah called on Arabs on Friday to stand together against “attempts to destabilise” Egypt, in a message of support for the military leadership and an attack on the Muslim Brotherhood.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its people and government, stood and stands today with its brothers in Egypt against terrorism,” he said in a message read out on Saudi television, in an apparent reference to continuing clashes between the Muslim Brotherhood and police.

“I call on the honest men of Egypt and the Arab and Muslim nations ... to stand as one man and with one heart in the face of attempts to destabilise a country that is at the forefront of Arab and Muslim history,” he added.
