« As I was preparing images for the upcoming book, Tokyo Unseen, I came across a few shots of drunken people. The first one in particular I knew would have to be in the book. It was a no-brainer for me as it is one of my favorite photos that I’ve taken. However, like my last post about homelessness, these images raise an ethical dilemma. So, I also treat publicly drunk people with heightened consideration. In the same vein, it is not my intention to embarrass or mock. Nonetheless, these moments exist in the public sphere and so I am compelled to photograph them when I feel they convey a worthwhile narrative or mood. The first shot is the best such example, but I feel the others also work on that level. And, to put my money where my mouth is, the last shot is a fun one. It is yours truly, drunk and asleep in a flower bed at Roppongi crossing in 2008. Although I completely blacked out, the friends who were with me (one of whom took this photo) assured me that several passing salarymen also got a picture. So, it can happen to anyone and that is okay. 😊 #tokyo #japan #streetphotography #tokyounseen #street #photography #night #nightstreet #noctopolis #urban #metropolis »
