The Israeli shooting resulted in the killing of 2 Palestinian civilians, including a paramedic, in eastern Rafah. The abovementioned civilians were wounded at approximately 18:15, while they were around 50-100 meters away from the border fence when an Israeli tank heavily opened fire at the demonstrators, east of the city. In less than an hour of their injury, medical sources at the European Hospital declared their death. Those civilians killed were identified as:

‘Abdullah Sabri ‘Atiyiah al-Qitati ( 22), a volunteer paramedic in pulse of life youth team, from Rafah. ‘Abdullah was hit with a live bullet that entered and exited his back.

Palestinian medical sources in Hebron, in the southern part of the occupied West Bank, said a young man died, Sunday, from very serious complications resulting from wounds, he suffered in 2009, after Israeli soldiers shot him.

The Palestinian, Ya’coub Fayeq Nassar, 18, was just a child, 9 years of age, when the soldiers shot him in his spine, in the al-Fawwar refugee camp, south of Hebron in the southern part of the West Bank, and suffered ongoing complications.

His injury caused paralysis, and he spent years being transferred to various Palestinian hospitals in West Bank, and was eventually moved to an Israeli hospital where he underwent many surgeries and medical procedures.

In February of last year, the doctors at Ichilov Hospital had to amputate his legs, but his condition continued to deteriorate, and he suffered a renal failure, before eventually succumbed to his wounds.

    • U.S. Ambassador Dean Ambushed in Lebanon, Escapes Attack Unhurt - The Washington Post

      1980

U.S. Ambassador John Gunther Dean escaped unharmed tonight after gunmen in a speeding Mercedes attacked his bulletproof limousine as he was leaving his Hazmieh residence in a convoy.

The ensuing battle between the ambasador’s bodyguards and the gunmen left the embassy car demolished on the passenger side, with window glass shattered and tires flat, embassy sources said.

Later this evening, Dean appeared at the gate of the embassy and waved to bystanders but refused to make a statement on the incident. He showed no signs of injury. [The Associate Press, quoting security sources, said Dean’s wife Martine and daughter Catherine also were unharmed.]

It was the first attempt on an American ambassador’s life in Lebanon since June 16, 1976, when ambassador Francis E. Eloy, economic counselor Robert O. Waring and their chauffeur were kidnaped and killed on their way from West Beirut to East Beirut during the civil war.

[Several hours after the attack on Dean, gunmen with automatic rifles dragged the Spanish ambassador and his wife from their car and drove away in the embasy vehicle. Ambassador Luis Jordana Pozas told the Associated Press. Jordana said five men pushed them from the car in mostly Moslem West Beirut. There was no indication whether the theft of Jordana’s car was related to the attack on the American diplomat.]

Today’s attack came just hours after Dean said the United States was working with Israel and the United Nations to end the violence among Christian militiamen and Palestinian guerrillas in southern Lebanon. It was his first public statement since Aug. 21, when he created an uproar by condemning an Israeli raid on Palestinian guerilla strongholds in the area. The U.S. State Department later disavowed the statement.

There were conflicting reports about the kind of explosive that was aimed at the ambassador’s car. Some local radio stations said it was a rocket, while others said it was a rifle grenade. None of the reports could be confirmed.

The shooting took place as Dean was driving to Beirut. Excited security guards outside the U.S. Embassy told reporters that a spurt of machine-gun fire followed the explosion.

The attackers, who abandoned their car, fled into the woods on the side of the highway, Beirut’s official radio said.

Lebanese Army troops and internal security forces were quickly moved to the ambush site and an all-night search was begun to track down the would-be killers. Reliable police sources said two Lebanese suspected of being linked to the assassination attermpt were taken in for questioning.

Following a meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Fuad Butros today, Dean stressed that "American policy includes opposition to all acts of violence which ignore or violate the internationally recognized border between Lebanon and Israel.

Did Israel try to kill the U.S. ambassador in Lebanon in the early 1980s?Haggai Hadas’ experience is not necessarily an advantage in the talks over Gilad Shalit’s release The Israeli intelligence community has committed quite a number of crimes against the United States during its 60-year lifetime. In the early 1950s it recruited agents from among Arab officers serving in Washington (with the help of military attache Chaim Herzog). In the 1960s it stole uranium through Rafi Eitan and the Scientific Liaison Bureau in what came to be known as the Apollo Affair, when uranium was smuggled to Israel from Dr. Zalman Shapira’s Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation - in Apollo, Pennsylvania). In the 1980s it operated spies (Jonathan Pollard and Ben-Ami Kadish), and used businessmen (such as Arnon Milchan) to steal secrets, technology and equipment for its nuclear program and other purposes.

Now the Israeli government is being accused of attempted murder. John Gunther Dean, a former U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, claims in a memoir released last week that Israeli intelligence agents attempted to assassinate him. Dean was born in 1926 in Breslau, Germany (today Wroclaw, Poland), as John Gunther Dienstfertig. His father was a Jewish lawyer who described himself as a German citizen of the Jewish religion who is not a Zionist. The family immigrated to the U.S. before World War II. As an adult Dean joined the State Department and served as a diplomat in Vietnam, Afghanistan and India, among other states.

    Once again: Stop shooting
    – Haaretz Editorial - Israel News | Haaretz.com
    https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/editorial/once-again-stop-shooting-1.6032762

This Friday the “March of Return” demonstrators in the Gaza Strip will once again face off with Israel Defense Forces soldiers. But this Friday must not, for the fifth time in a row, become the last day in the lives of yet more desperate but unarmed young men who aren’t endangering anyone, or the day on which more and more young demonstrators become disabled for the rest of their lives.
Whether this happens is in the hands of the IDF and its officers. This fifth Friday in the ongoing series of demonstrations must finally bring the cessation of the IDF’s use of potentially lethal fire at unarmed demonstrators. It must end without casualties.
    >> Hamas hijacked the Gaza protests ■ Killing of Gaza protesters undermines Israel’s claims of self-defense >>
On Wednesday, the 40th victim of this shooting at demonstrators died of his wounds. The victim was press photographer Ahmed Abu Hussein, who was severely wounded in the stomach two weeks ago by a sniper’s bullet.
Abu Hussein was one of only four casualties, including an 11-year-old boy who lost his leg, whom Israel allowed to be sent to a hospital in Ramallah. And even those four were allowed to be transferred only after a petition to the High Court of Justice. Of the 5,511 people who have so far been wounded in the demonstrations along the Gaza-Israel border fence, some 1,700 were wounded by live bullets.

According to doctors in Gaza, the wounds during these demonstrations have been especially severe. Thousands of wounded is a frightening statistic considering that the demonstrators whom the army is confronting are unarmed and, as a rule, nonviolent. Given the collapse of Gaza’s health system, the fact that the defense establishment, on orders from Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, isn’t letting more of the casualties receive treatment in Ramallah or Israel adds insult to injury. Abu Hussein ultimately died in an Israeli hospital, after his condition deteriorated.

The 40 people who have been killed in the demonstrations were all young, and two were children. Their deaths could have been avoided had restrictions been imposed on the IDF’s use of live fire against the protesters.
The consistent, ongoing decline in the number of casualties from week to week isn’t only due to the decline in the number of demonstrators from week to week. It also attests to relative restraint in the conduct of IDF soldiers. But this isn’t enough. Starting on Friday, the IDF must set itself a clear goal – zero Palestinian casualties as long as they aren’t endangering anyone’s life.

    Saturday 03 March 2018:
In a new crime, the Israeli forces killed a Palestinian farmer after opening fire at him when he was in his agricultural land near the border fence with Israel in Khuza’ah village, east of Kahn Younis. Investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) revealed that the shooting occurred in light of full calmness in the area and the farmer was in an agricultural area without posing any threat to the life of Israeli soldiers stationed along the border fence adjacent to the land.

According to PCHR’s investigations, at approximately 12:30 on Saturday, 03 March 2018, the Israeli forces stationed along the border fence with Israel near the Military gate next to al-Najjar neighborhood in Khuza’ah village, east of Khan Younis, fired 2 bullets at farmer Mohammed ‘Ata ‘Abed al-Mawla Abu Jame’a (59) while he was working in his land that is 200 meters away from the border fence. As a result, he was hit with a bullet to the right thigh and taken by an ambulance to the Gaza European Hospital. He was then admitted to the Operation Room for internal bleeding. At approximately 17:30, medical sources at the hospital declared he succumbed to his injury.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot and killed after he carried out an alleged vehicular attack on Israeli soldiers, lightly injuring one, at a junction near the village of Tuqu and the illegal Israeli settlement Maale Amos in the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem.

An Israeli army spokesperson claimed that the alleged assailant rammed his car at Israeli forces stationed at the junction, leaving one Israeli soldier lightly wounded. The driver then allegedly exited his vehicle armed with a knife and attempted to stab the soldier, when another soldier fatally shot the Palestinian.

Israel’s emergency medical service Magen David Adom said it evacuated the 20-year-old Israeli soldier in a moderate condition to Israel’s Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem for treatment, while the Palestinian driver was “neutralized” and treated by the Israeli army at the scene before being declared dead.

An eyewitness told Ma’an that he saw the Palestinian, who was wearing a red shirt, lying motionless on the ground, and claimed that he saw two wounded Israeli soldiers — one suffering from a serious injury and unable to move, and another with a minor injury. However, the Israeli army spokespersonsaid just one soldier had been wounded.

Another witness said that an Israeli ambulance later evacuated the body, after Israeli forces preventing Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances from approaching the scene.

Locals sources in Tuqu identified the slain man to Ma’an as 24-year-old Muhammad Ibrahim Jibril , from Tuqu. Palestinian security sources had said he was 25, while other local media outlets said he was 23.

In a new crime of excessive use of force, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian from Taqou’ village, east of Bethlehem. They claimed that he attempted to carry out a run-over and stab attack against Israeli soldiers, who were present in the bypass street (60) near Taqou’ settlement.

According to PCHR’s investigations, at approximately 12:47 on the same day, Israeli forces opened fire at Mohammed Ibrahim Jabrin (23) from Taqou’ village, east of Bethlehem. They claimed that Mohammed attempted to carry out stab and run-over attack against Israeli soldiers, who were present in Street (60) near “Taqou” settlement, south of the city. As a result, Mohammed sustained several live bullet wounds and died immediately. Following that, the spokesperson of the Israeli forces said in a statement: “A run-over attack happened near Taqou’ village, causing the injury of an Israeli soldier with minor wounds. The attacker stepped out of the car and attempted to stab soldiers, so he was shot dead.” Jabrin family refused the Israeli claims regarding their son’s attempt to carry out a stab attack. They instead considered what happened as a car accident. They added that the Israeli soldiers immediately opened fire at Mohammed. PCHR’s investigations in previous shooting incidents show that the Israeli forces used to open fire against Palestinian civilians once they have suspicions on their attempt to carry out run-over attacks against their soldiers. On the same day evening, 17 military jeeps moved into Taqou’ village and surrounded Jabrin house. A number of the soldiers raided and searched the house. They then interrogated dozens of civilians in the village before they withdrew on Tuesday dawn, 11 July 2017.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli forces at a junction near the illegal Israeli settlement of Gush Etzion in the southern occupied West Bank on Wednesday afternoon.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that a Palestinian vehicle hit a bus stop at the junction, injuring an Israeli civilian, adding that Israeli forces in the area shot at the driver, who they described as an “assailant.”

However, photographs of the scene published by Israeli media showed that the Palestinian vehicle had seemingly collided with the back of a bus.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed later in the afternoon that the Palestinian succumbed to wounds sustained when he was shot by soldiers at the scene, identifying him as Suhaib Moussa Mashour Mashahra, 21, from the Jerusalem-district village of al-Sawahira.

Official Palestinian news agency Wafa quoted Palestinian Red Crescent emergency services head Muhammad Awwad as saying that Israeli forces prevented Palestinian medics from reaching Mashahra and treating him, while the army spokesperson told Ma’an that the Palestinian had been treated by army medics on the scene and evacuated to an unspecified hospital. LEBANON (Ma’an) — Armed clashes in Lebanon’s Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp continued to rage on as of Sunday morning, having left at least five dead and dozens more injured since Friday.

Lebanese news sites reported that after a new joint Palestinian force deployed in the camp, Islamist militants led by Bilal Badr — who has alleged links to al-Qaeda and lives in the camp’s al-Tira neighborhood — attacked members of the new security force with live fire and shelling, sparking clashes.

Badr and his followers are among non-Palestinian militants who reside in the Palestinian refugee camp, which also include Lebanese fugitives wanted by Lebanese security forces, that PLO factions have long sought to expel from the camp.

As of Saturday morning, one member of the joint Palestinian forces and a member of the Fatah were declared dead, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).

Clashes caused a major fire Saturday night, resulting in the injury of at least one person.

The joint Palestinian force advanced further into al-Tira on Sunday morning, with NNA reporting as of Sunday afternoon that five had been killed and 37 other injured. It remained unclear whether the five were in addition to the two individuals declared dead Saturday, or if five men had been killed in total during the three-day period.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot and killed a 19-year-old Palestinian and injured several others early Sunday morning in Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank, after clashes erupted following an Israeli army raid into the camp.

Locals identified the slain young man as 19-year-old Muhammad Mahmoud Abu Khalifa, with sources saying he was shot with a live bullet in the lower back that went through his body, emerging from his abdomen.

Medical sources could not immediately be reached to confirm the nature of his injuries.

State-run Palestinian news agency Wafa said that Abu Khalifa was left on the ground for hours before paramedics were able to evacuate his body.

At least five other Palestinian youth were injured, including one seriously, and were evacuated to Jenin hospital for treatment.

After undercover Israeli forces in a civilian vehicle infiltrated the camp, dozens of military vehicles stormed the area, sparking violent clashes that continued for several hours, according to reports.

Israeli forces heavily fired live ammunition, stun grenades, and tear gas into the camp as youth threw stones and Molotov cocktails.

Shortly after, a funeral procession was held for Abu Khalifa, with hundreds of mourners carrying his body through the streets of the camp.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed the clashes to Ma’an via telephone, saying that “violent rioters attacked and hurled pipe bombs” at Israeli forces, with no injuries reported among Israeli forces.

“Responding to the threat, forces fired toward main instigators,” the spokesperson added. She said that “hits were confirmed,” but did not directly confirm Abu Khalifa’s killing or the number of Palestinians to be injured.

The purpose of the hours-long raid remained unclear, as the Israeli army spokesperson said that no detentions were made in the camp. However, Muhammad’s cousins were detained in a raid into Jenin refugee camp on Thursday, with the Israeli army claiming brothers Muhammad and Ahmad Abu Khalifa were “Hamas operatives.”(...)

As a result, Mohammed Mahmoud Abu Khalifah (16) was hit with a bullet that entered his lower back and exited the abdomen. He was transferred to Dr Khalil Suleiman Hospital where he was announced dead. The shooting also caused the injury of 4 other civilians, including a child and his brother. The wounded civilians were transferred to the abovementioned hospital, where the Medical sources classified the child’s injury as serious. It should be mentioned that, the Israeli forces prevented Palestinian ambulances from approaching the wounded civilians until they withdrew at approximately 05:30, but no arrests were reported (PCHR keeps the names of the wounded civilians).

An Israeli soldier facing trial for the killing of an unarmed Palestinian teenager that was shown on TV screens around the world may now get away with a slap on the wrist.

Israeli Border Police combatant Ben Dery is charged with manslaughter in the slaying of 17-year-old Nadim Nuwara on 15 May 2014 – Nakba Day, when Palestinians commemorate their 1948 ethnic cleansing from much of their homeland.

But Israeli media are reporting that the manslaughter charge may now be dropped.

Dery’s lawyer told the Tel Aviv newspaper Haaretz this week that prosecutors are discussing a plea bargain in which his client would admit only to “negligence” – that a live round, instead of a rubber-coated bullet, found its way into his magazine unintentionally.

The charges against Dery represent one of the exceptionally rare instances of Israeli soldiers being prosecuted for the killing or injury of a Palestinian.

“Reports of a potential plea agreement are unsurprising given that Israeli forces enjoy near complete impunity for killing and violence against Palestinian children,” Brad Parker, attorney and international advocacy officer with Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCIP), told The Electronic Intifada.

    • Neural activity promotes long-distance, target-specific regeneration of adult retinal axons : Nature Neuroscience : Nature Publishing Group
      http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nn.4340.html

      Abstract
Axons in the mammalian CNS fail to regenerate after injury. Here we show that if the activity of mouse retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) is increased by visual stimulation or using chemogenetics, their axons regenerate. We also show that if enhancement of neural activity is combined with elevation of the cell-growth-promoting pathway involving mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), RGC axons regenerate long distances and re-innervate the brain. Analysis of genetically labeled RGCs revealed that this regrowth can be target specific: RGC axons navigated back to their correct visual targets and avoided targets incorrect for their function. Moreover, these regenerated connections were successful in partially rescuing a subset of visual behaviors. Our findings indicate that combining neural activity with activation of mTOR can serve as powerful tool for enhancing axon regeneration, and they highlight the remarkable capacity of CNS neurons to re-establish accurate circuit connections in adulthood.
