The Power of the Russian State vs. a Librarian

There is something particularly Orwellian about accusing a librarian of hate crimes because books under her care don’t jibe with government propaganda. That, in essence, is what a Russian court did in giving to Natalia Sharina a four-year suspended sentence because the Moscow Library of Ukrainian Literature, which she formerly headed, purportedly carried literature that didn’t match Russia’s official version of what’s happening in #Ukraine.

The director of a Ukrainian-language library in Moscow was placed under house arrest on Monday by a Russian court that accused her of allowing public access to banned literature. The director, Natalia Sharina, could face as much as five years in prison for what Russian law enforcement agencies said was the dissemination of books by a Ukrainian nationalist writer, Dmytro Korchynsky, that are banned in Russia for promoting anti-Russian propaganda. Ms. Sharina denied the charges, saying the banned books were “planted during the searches,” a claim that was repeated by staff members. “Books cannot constitute extremism, because in my opinion extremism is an action,” she said in the courtroom, the Kommersant newspaper reported. Ms. Sharina’s lawyers have appealed the decision, the Interfax news agency said, and Human Rights Watch called for her immediate release in a statement.

Russian court convicts man for Ukraine flag protest
A court has jailed a man over a stunt in which an iconic Moscow rooftop was painted to resemble the Ukrainian flag. Vladimir Podrezov was sentenced to more than two years for being an accomplice to vandalism.

Moscow’s Tagansky district court on Thursday sentenced Podrezov to two years and three months in prison for “hatred-motivated vandalism.”
The 20-year-old “roofer” - a Russian term for an extreme urban sportsman - was convicted over a stunt in which a yellow Soviet-era star was painted half-blue to resemble the Ukrainian flag.
The conviction came despite the fact that a Ukrainian daredevil known as Mustang claimed credit for the deed, saying it was an “art performance.” Podrezov was found guilty of supplying the paint to Mustang, and taking him to the roof.
Four other people, who were on the roof when the incident happened, were acquitted amid doubts about their guilt. The four young Russians, base jumpers who parachute from high rise buildings for fun, spent months under house arrest ahead of the court case. The defense claimed it had been a coincidence that they had been there at the same time.

’A surge of sentiment’
Mustang, whose real name is Pavel Ushivets, said all those arrested were innocent, and posted a picture of himself standing by the painted star with a Ukrainian flag.
“I did not see the Russian citizens on the roof and I don’t even know them,” said Ushivets, a one-time member of a Ukrainian volunteer battalion. Ushivets, who lives in Ukraine, said he painted the star due to a “surge of sincere patriotic sentiments” amid the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
The AFP news agency reported one of the acquitted, Anna Lepeshkina, as telling journalists that the result had come as a surprise. “We have a small percentage of acquittals, we didn’t believe it till the end,” said Lepeshinka. “The investigation, unlike the court, was unfair. They constantly put pressure on us,” she said.

Russian authorities have decreed that a soldier arrested in the murders of all seven members of an Armenian family will be tried in a Russian military court, not in an Armenian court.

The dictate is a slap in the face to the Armenian people.

Thousands of us had demonstrated after the murders in mid-January to demand that 19-year-old Valeri Permyakov be tried in Armenia. Russian officials rubbed salt in the wound by declaring that the offense Permyakov is accused of is a “military crime.”

It is nothing of the sort, many Armenians contend.

The murders were committed off Russia’s military base at #Gyumri, where Permyakov was stationed, and had nothing to do with any military matter. Russia’s defiance of Armenian popular will in refusing to hand Permyakov over for trial in Armenia has prompted many of us to contend that our government’s kowtowing to this powerful neighbor has gone too far.

One thing the skeptics have asked is why the government handed Permyakov over to Russia in the first place. Armenian border guards arrested him the day after the murders as he was trying to slip across the border into Turkey.

Rather than surrender the soldier to Armenian police, the border guards gave him to Russian authorities. He is now in confinement on the base at Gyumri, where Russian authorities said he will be tried.
