Aujourd’hui, il a tiré un trait sur le réseau social, au point d’interdire à ses enfants de l’utiliser. « Je peux contrôler ce que font mes enfants, et ils ne sont pas autorisés à utiliser cette merde ! » C’est un discours sévère qu’a tenu, en novembre, un ancien cadre de Facebook à l’encontre des réseaux sociaux en général, et de l’entreprise de Mark Zuckerberg en particulier. Lors d’une conférence à la Stanford Graduate School of Business, dont la vidéo a été repérée lundi 11 décembre par le site spécialisé The Verge, Chamath Palihapitiya, qui fut chez Facebook vice-président chargé de la croissance de l’audience, exprime ses regrets d’avoir participé au succès de l’entreprise.

« Chamath ne travaille plus chez Facebook depuis plus de six ans. (...) Facebook était alors une entreprise très différente, et en grandissant, nous avons pris conscience que nos responsabilités s’étaient elles aussi étendues », explique Facebook. « Nous prenons notre rôle très au sérieux et nous travaillons dur pour nous améliorer », ajoute l’entreprise, qui souligne avoir collaboré avec des chercheurs « pour comprendre les effets de notre service sur le bien-être ».

But in recent years, as lives have become increasingly sedentary, the idea has been put to the test. The precise physiology is unknown, but professors and therapists are turning what was once an unquestioned instinct into a certainty: Walking influences our thinking, and somehow improves creativity.

Last year, researchers at Stanford found that people perform better on creative divergent thinking tests during and immediately after walking. The effect was similar regardless of whether participants took a stroll inside or stayed inside, walking on a treadmill and staring at a wall. The act of walking itself, rather than the sights encountered on a saunter, was key to improving creativity, they found.

Dan Schwartz, who conducted the study and is Dean of Stanford Graduate School of Education, says in an interview that there are “very complicated” physiological changes associated with walking. It’s not exactly clear why walking is helpful to so many thinkers, but “it could be that the brain is focusing on doing a task it’s quite good at,” he adds, which then allows it to free up and relax.
