UNHCR TRACKS | A Good Samaritan in Greece
Father Efstratios Dimou – “Papa Stratis” to all and sundry – sits in the front yard of his house, surrounded by flowers in earthenware pots, a small apricot tree and his big bear-like dog, Siba. Overhead on the Greek island of Lesvos, swallows fly in and out of a nest on the wall.
#Vatican to host #Palestine-Israel ’peace prayer’ with Abbas, Peres
Pope Francis on Sunday hosts an unprecedented peace prayer meeting with Israeli President #Shimon_Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas in a symbolic gesture to foster dialogue but unlikely to have any immediate effect. Tensions are running high between the two sides following the formation of a new Palestinian unity government backed by the Hamas and the announcement of Israeli plans for building 3,200 new settler homes. The Vatican is realistic about the effects of the ceremony. read more

#Pope_Francis calls for two-state solution, stops at Israeli apartheid wall

Pope Francis made an unscheduled stop at Israel’s towering West Bank apartheid wall in Bethlehem Sunday after calling for an end to the “increasingly unacceptable” Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The pope has said his three-day visit to the Middle East, which began in Jordan Saturday, has “purely religious” motives, but Palestinians hoped he would show support for statehood, weeks after the collapse of US-brokered peace talks with the Israelis. Francis was to (...)
Pope Francis headed for #Jordan Saturday at the start of a Middle East tour aimed at boosting ties with Muslims and Jews as well as easing an age-old rift within Christianity. The Vatican has billed Francis’ first visit to a region roiled by religious and political differences as a “pilgrimage of prayer,” saying the pope will shun bulletproof vehicles in favor of open-top cars despite security concerns. read more

Fearing disruption by Jewish extremists when #Pope_Francis visits Jerusalem, police said on Friday they would issue restraining orders against 10 more right-wing activists, bringing the total to 15. “Yesterday the head of the Jerusalem district mentioned that there would be a further 10,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP on Friday. He did not give further details. On Wednesday, Israel placed three young Jews under house arrest on suspicion they were planning to disrupt the pontiff’s Sunday-Monday visit. read (...)

Several hundred Christians from the Gaza Strip have been allowed to leave the besieged #Palestinian territory to travel to the West Bank for Pope Francis’s upcoming visit, officials said Thursday. “Israel allowed around 650 Christians in Gaza to travel to the West Bank during the pope’s visit” this weekend, a security official told AFP. Dozens of pilgrims passed through the Erez border crossing Thursday morning, an AFP correspondent said, referring to the Israeli-controlled personnel crossing from the Strip. read more

Samri, who did not elaborate on what it was thought they intended to do, said the restraining order would apply for four days. read more
Israeli vandals spray anti-Christian graffiti ahead of #Pope_Francis visit

Vandals sprayed anti-Christian graffiti on a Jerusalem church on Friday, despite Israeli police stepping up security around religious sites ahead of a visit by Pope Francis later this month. “Price tag... King David for the Jews... Jesus is garbage” was spray-painted in Hebrew on the wall of St George’s, a Romanian Orthodox church near an ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. “Price tag” is a euphemism for hate attacks by Zionist extremists. read (...)

Donor card or not, the #pope's organs are going nowhere | World news | The Guardian
Instead of providing a liver or kidney to a needy recipient, pope Benedict’s body will belong to the church when he dies, said one #Vatican official, who suggested that veneration of the pontiff’s remains would be complicated if they were not all in the same place.

So it was with a little hope that opposition leaders asked to meet Archbishop Martin Vidovic, the papal nuncio in #Belarus. They carried a letter to the Pope, which said: “Today Belarus is enshrouded in darkness. Arrests of activists, raids and pogroms at independent websites and newspaper offices, searches of apartments continue. The authorities are blackmailing the political prisoners using their little children. We are seeking your help.” The nuncio refused to meet them. Later he relented, but Ratzinger has not protested against the oppression or promised to break diplomatic relations with the outlaw state.
