    Automation and the Sharing Economy

Human production is in the midst of a sea-change. The growth in global connectivity, coupled with advancements in automation is giving rise to a new economy, the sharing economy.Sharing #economics is not a new phenomena. In fact, the modern sharing economies catalyzed by #uber and Lyft, often touted as innovative, are a derivation of the most primitive economic structure: trade and barter. The Uber and Lyft S-1s have shed light on the vulnerabilities in the economics that underpin their business model. This has brought about discussion with respect to the long-term viability of these businesses, and at a cursory evaluation of the financials, it makes sense that people would draw that conclusion. The problem with that analysis, however, is that it takes a nearsighted view of a long term (...)

Uberizing Uber — The Rise of BlockchainAn interesting coincidence happened in 2009 surrounding the expansion of the collaborative economy triggered by Uber and the development of distributed ledger technologies aka blockchainCredit: paybase.ioThe Zero Marginal Cost SocietyIn 2014, few months after its release, I read Jeremy Rifkin’s Zero Marginal Cost Society which appeared to me as one of the most far-sighted book I have ever read. In this 400+ pages work, Rifkin highlights the rise of the sharing economy, predicts the development of the Collaborative Commons and the demise of capitalism as we know it. Rifkin forecasts these shifts based on new technologies enabling individuals to work together in a more direct and efficient way. The conclusions drawn were a bit astonishing especially (...)

Over 50 and Winning the Gig EconomyToday, 60% of workers aged 45+ have experienced prejudice and unfairness in the workplace based on their age, sometimes even going far enough to reach termination and replacement. Yet, by the time we reach 2024, around 25% of the US workforce will be aged 55 and over — here’s how older professionals are succeeding.Of all the self-employed individuals in the US, 49% are Baby Boomers. But the freedom and independence of self-employment and entrepreneurship didn’t happen overnight; it’s the sum of experience. “Many baby boomers are not interested in retirement. They’re always interested in building something,” says Sylvia DeWitt, administrator of the Iowa Entrepreneurs Coalition. For older corporate professionals faced with the risks of being replaced with (...)

What’s the Biggest Threat to Scooter Sharing in 2019?While 2018 was the year when the world learned about e-scooters, 2019 may be the year when the world forgets about them. What changes can be made? The winter came. It came together with snowy sidewalks, cold weather and more news about investors’ chilling interest in #scooter-sharing companies. More precisely, VCs are very cautious about startups’ financials. Vandalism, government regulations, charger fraud — these factors pose a significant threat to the bottom line and the whole phenomenon of electric scooters. But initially, expectations were much more optimistic.Envisioned in sci-fiIf you take a wider perspective, electric scooters are the reincarnation of self-moving walkways envisioned by sci-fi writers 100 years ago: efficient and (...)

Bird’s new Platform program and the rise of the “business in a box”

This week, CRV portfolio company Bird publicly announced a new platform for independent operators to manage their own scooter fleets. Bird will sell the scooters and provide access to a marketplace of chargers and mechanics in exchange for a 20% revenue share. We’re incredibly excited about this program, as it allows Bird to quickly expand geographically while giving operators the chance to build a great business on top of a fantastic product. This effort from Bird fits perfectly within a category that we have huge excitement around — the “business in a box.” These platforms give entrepreneurs the opportunity and infrastructure to run a business without the convoluted and expensive process of building a company from scratch. Entrepreneurs also benefit from the brand and budget of the parent (...)

    Tempelhof-Schöneberg weitet Leihfahrrad-Kontrollen aus - Berlin - Aktuelle Nachrichten - Berliner Morgenpost
    ▻https://www.morgenpost.de/berlin/article214337341/Tempelhof-Schoeneberg-weitet-Leihfahrrad-Kontrollen-aus.html

If you’ve taken an Uber to the airport or rented an Airbnb, you’ve been a part of it.We’re even at a point where renting out personal items is a viable business model. For example, Omni Storage stores items you’re not using — just like a normal storage company — but they also rent your items out to people. Skis, guitar, winter jacket. It’s all available for rent (with the owner’s permission) via an app. We all hold onto certain possessions, because we plan to use them eventually. Or so we tell ourselves. Why not make some money off of our stuff instead of letting it go unused? That question is at the heart of the sharing economy, and we’re (...)

A couple of years ago, I published an article entitled “The Sharing Economy: A Social Movement Dying to Become an Economic One.” At the time, I was disenchanted by the direction in which the sharing economy was heading.I’d experienced the joy of connecting without money — sharing meals and homes (including my own home) with complete strangers on Couchsurfing.com, gifting access to my car while I traveled, and experimenting with random acts of generosity, like buying a cup of coffee for someone standing behind me in line. These experiences were so transformational that I volunteered to help shoot a documentary, One Couch at a Time, which highlighted the relational aspects of the burgeoning sharing economy.Collaborators on “One Couch at at Time” & It’s a Shareable LifeWith time, the social (...)
