An in-depth review of randomised trials on screening for breast, colo-rectal, cervical, prostate and lung cancers, published today in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, shows that the benefits of mammographic screening are likely to have been over-estimated. “This overestimation results from the use of an unconventional statistical method which differs from that used for other cancer screening trials,” according to Professor Philippe Autier, lead author of the study.
