Forensic Oceanography (FO) is an investigation into the conditions that have caused the death of more than 1500 persons fleeing Libya across the Central Mediterranean in the Spring of 2011 (estimate by UNHCR). FO has so far provided its expertise in spatial analysis to a number of organisations and institutions who have conducting inquiries into these deaths. The project will further seek to devise ways in which a wide range of technologies and media might be used to document violations of human rights at sea and increase accountability in the future.

Forensic Oceanography (FO) is an investigation into the conditions that have caused the death of more than 1500 persons fleeing Libya across the Central Mediterranean in the Spring of 2011 (estimate by UNHCR). FO has so far provided its expertise in spatial analysis to a number of organisations and institutions who have conducting inquiries into these deaths. The project will further seek to devise ways in which a wide range of technologies and media might be used to document violations of human rights at sea and increase accountability in the future.

Alors que le bateau Oloferne de Boats4People est en mer, de nombreux autres participants à la campagne contribuent depuis la terre, et ce à travers l’Afrique, l’Europe et même les USA. Parmi eux, les initiateurs du projet de recherche Forensic Oceanography de l’Université de Goldsmiths, Londres, qui, dans le cadre de B4P, ont lancé une nouvelle plateforme en ligne pour cartographier en temps presque réel les morts des migrants ainsi que les violations de leurs droits aux frontières maritimes de l’UE.

Une « Tour de contrôle civile » (aussi appelée « WatchTheMed ») pour observer la Méditerranée, WatchTheMed tente de documenter les incidents en mer en puisant dans de nombreuses sources tels que des images satellites, les signaux de détresse envoyés par les gardes côtes, les informations fournies par les marins, la presse et les témoignages des migrants. Ces incidents sont inscrits dans la structure complexe de la Méditerranée : zones SAR qui se chevauches, patrouilles maritimes, couvertures des radars, routes maritimes, zones de pêche, plateformes pétrolières.

En assemblant ces différentes sources en spatialisant les données, la plateforme WatchTheMed vise à devenir un nouvel outil pour exercer un droit de regard en Méditerranée et mettre un terme à l’impunité qui y reigne concernant le traitement des migrants.

WatchTheMed est un projet pilote qui sera testé et affiné durant les trois semaines en mer de B4P.
