Israel-friendly framing of news was commonplace at the #BBC during the two decades I worked there, but one colleague stood out for his single-minded promotion of Zionist narratives. He has since risen to an influential editorial position and gained a rare degree of notoriety on social media. I worked with this person for eight years, from his recruitment to the News Online World team in 2001, until I moved on from being a senior broadcast journalist on the Middle East online desk in 2009, and he took my place.

    #propagande

I was on #BBC last night, following a clip with voices from Iran. All the selected voices welcomed war, saying they cheered every time they heard an explosion.

Those views exist. But when you ONLY air those voices, you are doing war propaganda.

And I told BBC that live on air.

Footage: Israeli soldiers executing two Palestinians

Today (Thursday), during an Israeli military raid on the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank, soldiers were filmed shooting two Palestinians at point-blank range, killing Yusef ’Asa’sah, 39 years old, and al-Muntaser bel-lah ‘Abdallah, 26 years old. The footage shows the two Palestinians, defined by the military as wanted, being brought out of the building by soldiers and surrendering to them. The soldiers then order them to go back inside and sit on the ground – and then execute them, apparently while posing no threat to the forces.

B’Tselem’s Executive Director, Yuli Novak, said:
“The execution documented today is the result of an accelerated process of dehumanization of Palestinians and the complete abandonment of their lives by the Israeli regime. In Israel, there is no mechanism that acts to stop the killing of Palestinians or is capable of prosecuting those responsible. It is therefore the duty of the international community to end Israel’s impunity and hold accountable those responsible for planning and carrying out its criminal policies against the Palestinian people.”

Since October 2023, Israeli forces and settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank. The perpetrators, whether soldiers or settlers, are granted full impunity by Israel’s legal and law-enforcement systems.

In a statement, the Israeli military said the two men were wanted militants in the northern town of Jenin who had thrown explosives and opened fire at troops.

It said that after the men surrendered and exited a building, “fire was directed toward the suspects.” It said was the incident was “under review” and would be referred “to the relevant professional bodies.”

Palestinians and human rights groups say such investigations yield few results, and Israeli troops are rarely prosecuted.

Raffi Berg menacé de mort après des accusations de parti pris pro-Israël à la BBC - The Times of Israël
    ▻https://fr.timesofisrael.com/raffi-berg-menace-de-mort-apres-des-accusations-de-parti-pris-pro-

#BBC Ignored Internal Request to Correct Claim Anas Al-Sharif Worked With Hamas | Novara Media
    ▻https://novaramedia.com/2025/09/10/bbc-ignored-internal-plea-to-correct-claim-anas-al-sharif-worked-with-h

The leaked email, dated 18 August, was sent by BBC Global News to around 1,200 BBC journalists via a distribution address called “collective newsroom editorial”. It singled out a line in a BBC News article for correction: “The BBC understands Sharif did some work with a Hamas media team in Gaza before the current war”.

The email said the sentence “should be amended” to: “A source has told the BBC that Sharif had worked for a Hamas media team in Gaza before the current conflict, but Al Jazeera has denied this and the BBC News Arabic correspondent also says that he has seen no evidence.”

The email is signed by the BBC Global News team, as well as BBC News’ senior controller of news content and the deputy CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs.

At the time of reporting, the line in question remains uncorrected on the BBC News article, last updated 13 August. The same claim was also presented as fact on the BBC News liveblog on 11 August in reporting by Jon Donnison from Jerusalem, as well as cropping up in BBC Verify reporting on TikTok.

A BBC employee told Novara Media: “This leaked email […] exposes from the inside the culture of intimidation, fear and political control that journalists are subjected to within the corporation.

“The email admits a reported line that should never have made it onto the BBC’s front page was published without evidence, yet the error [sic] remains uncorrected and no one has been held accountable.

“In any other newsroom, such a grave editorial breach on a matter of major public interest, the targeted killing of a fellow journalist, would have led to senior resignations.”

That’s probably the biggest conclusion to draw from Donald Trump’s stunning proposal for the US to take over Gaza and turn it into a resort for all the people of the world to enjoy – a “Riviera of the Middle East”, in his words.
It also presents the latest iteration of a question that has persisted as long as Trump has been involved at the highest level of American politics.
Should Trump’s Gaza development plan, which includes the resettlement of more than two million Palestinians and US “ownership” of the contested lands be taken literally or seriously? Both, or neither?

La population palestinienne de Gaza victime d’un génocide - Amnesty International France
    ▻https://www.amnesty.fr/actualites/rapport-genocide-palestiniens-gaza-commis-par-etat-israel

    Application du plan #génocidaire (“controversé” pour la #BBC) de Giora #Eiland à #Gaza;

’Surrender or starve’: Attack on Jabalia hints at controversial Israeli plan for northern Gaza
    ▻https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1e82yy0wxno

    https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/1024/branded_news/41ce/live/e7d36fc0-888b-11ef-81f8-1f28bcc5be15.jpg

The suspicion among Palestinians, the UN and relief agencies is that the IDF is gradually adopting some or all of a new tactic to clear northern Gaza known as the “Generals’ Plan”. It was proposed by a group of retired senior officers led by Maj-Gen (ret) Giora Eiland, who is a former national security adviser.

Like most Israelis they are frustrated and angry that a year into the war Israel still has not achieved its war aims of destroying Hamas and freeing the hostages. The Generals’ Plan is a new idea that its instigators believe can, from Israel’s perspective, break the deadlock.

At its heart is the idea that Israel can force the surrender of Hamas and its leader Yahya Sinwar by increasing the pressure on the entire population of the north. The first step is to order civilians to leave along evacuation corridors that will take them south of Wadi Gaza, an east-west stream that has become a dividing line in Gaza since the Israeli invasion last October.

    […]

“Since we already encircled the northern part of Gaza in the past nine or 10 months, what we should do is the following thing to tell all the 300,000 residents [that the UN estimates is 400,000] who still live in the northern part of Gaza that they have to leave this area and they should be given 10 days to leave through safe corridors that Israel will provide.

    […]

In his office in central Israel, [Giora Eiland] laid out the heart of the plan.

“And after that time, all this area will become to be a military zone. And all the Hamas people will still, though, whether some of them are fighters, some of them are civilians… will have two choices either to surrender or to starve.”

Eiland wants Israel to seal the areas once the evacuation corridors are closed. Anyone left behind would be treated as an enemy combatant. The area would be under siege, with the army blocking all supplies of food, water or other necessities of life from going in. He believes the pressure would become unbearable and what is left of Hamas would rapidly crumble, freeing the surviving hostages and giving Israel the victory it craves.
    […]
It is not clear whether the IDF has adopted the Generals’ Plan in part or in full, but the circumstantial evidence of what is being done in Gaza suggests it is at the very least a strong influence on the tactics being used against the population.

Failing Gaza: Pro-Israel bias uncovered behind the lens of Western media | Israel-Palestine conflict News | Al Jazeera

Ten journalists who have covered the war on Gaza for two of the world’s leading news networks, #CNN and the #BBC, have revealed the inner workings of those outlets’ newsrooms from October 7 onward, alleging pro-Israel bias in coverage, systematic double standards and frequent violations of journalistic principles.

In several cases, they accused senior newsroom figures of failing to hold Israeli officials to account and of interfering in reporting to downplay Israeli atrocities. In one instance at CNN, false Israeli propaganda was put on air despite advance warnings from staff members.

The journalists spoke to Al Jazeera’s The Listening Post, a weekly programme dissecting the world’s media, for its documentary Failing Gaza: Behind the Lens of Western Media.

Ten journalists who have covered the war on Gaza for two of the world’s leading news networks, CNN and the BBC, have revealed the inner workings of those outlets’ newsrooms from October 7 onward, alleging pro-Israel bias in coverage, systematic double standards and frequent violations of journalistic principles.

Adam*, a journalist at CNN, said before October 7, he “hand on heart” trusted the network’s journalistic practices.

“But after October 7, the ease with which I saw news lines that supported the Israeli narrative come out really shook me,” he said in the film. “There were times where CNN was happy to push hard. But on balance, it’s very clear where we lie, regrettably. And it’s not entirely with the truth.”

In November, CNN International Diplomatic Editor Nic Robertson embedded with the Israeli army to visit Gaza’s bombed-out al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital.

Once inside, military spokesperson Daniel Hagari claimed to have found proof Hamas was using the hospital to hide Israeli captives.

Hagari showed Robertson a document on the wall written in Arabic, which he said was a roster of Hamas members watching over the captives.

“This is a guarding list. Every terrorist has his own shift,” Hagari told Robertson.

Adam recalled the broadcast as “an embarrassing moment” for CNN.

“It wasn’t a Hamas roster at all,” he said. “It was a calendar, and written in Arabic were the days of the week. But the report that came out from Nic Robertson just swallowed up Israel’s claim.”

To make matters worse, the Israeli claim had already been debunked by Arabic speakers on social media before the CNN footage aired, and, according to multiple CNN journalists and an internal WhatsApp chat seen by Al Jazeera, a Palestinian producer alerted her colleagues, including Robertson, but was ignored. After the report aired on television, they said, another producer tried to get it corrected before it was posted online.

“One colleague saw the report and flagged to Nic, [saying,] ‘Hold on, people are saying that this is not accurate,’” Adam said. “And apparently, Nic said, ‘ Are you meaning to say that Hagari is lying to us? ’

“There was a chance for this to get stopped. But Nic was adamant, and it went out. He’s a very experienced correspondent. If you are trusting the Israeli government over your own colleagues, then you need to have your wrist slapped at the very least because your reporting has given cover to the Israeli operation.”

No proof ever emerged of captives being held at al-Rantisi hospital.

Adam also said there was a period of time when CNN journalists “couldn’t call air strikes in Gaza air strikes unless we had confirmation from the Israelis”.

“We would not be doing this in any other place. We would not tolerate the need to ask, say, the Russians whether they bombed a hospital in Kyiv.”

Recently, when health officials in Gaza announced that Israeli attacks had killed more than 40,000 people, CNN Managing Editor Mike McCarthy ordered his team to “contextualise and hold Hamas accountable”, Adam said.

“That was reflected in the framing from the shows,” he added.

Informing viewers of the grim milestone in August, CNN presenter Becky Anderson said in a news show, “The Gaza health ministry says more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the October 7 Hamas massacre in Israel that triggered the war,” and cautioned that CNN could not verify the toll. Leading experts have said the figure is likely an undercount.

Sara*, a former BBC journalist, accused the British broadcaster of a double standard in interviewing guests.

She told Al Jazeera that she no longer saw her future at the BBC in part because of a “sort of unwillingness among the executive” to address concerns around editorial bias.

In the days after October 7, the BBC set up an internal group chat in which producers could screen potential interviewees based on their online footprint.

Al Jazeera has obtained messages from that chat.

“It was overwhelmingly guests on the Palestinian side of things who were being looked into,” she said. “Palestinians [were] being flagged up for using the word Zionist, which isn’t something to flag necessarily.”

She said that “now and again” Israeli guests were vetted.

“But there was no balance in what was going on. Israeli spokespeople who we did have on were given a lot of free rein to say whatever they wanted with very little pushback,” she said.

For example, Israeli politician Idan Roll on October 17 told BBC presenter Maryam Moshiri that “babies were set on fire” and “babies were shot in the head” during the Hamas incursion into southern Israel, claims that Israel has not proved and Hamas rejects.

Moshiri did not challenge or probe his claim.

Over the past year, experts and veteran journalists have increasingly accused top Western media outlets of maintaining a pro-Israel bias while dehumanising Palestinians and minimising their suffering.

A small number of journalists at The New York Times and the BBC have resigned publicly, citing their consciences. Others have tried to change things from the inside with campaigns and internal meetings.

“This is a moment in history that we don’t often see where we actually see #genocide being perpetrated as it’s happening,” Craig Mokhiber, a United Nations human rights official who resigned last year over the organisation’s response to Israel’s war in Gaza, told Al Jazeera.

“In a situation where Western governments like the United States, the UK and others have been complicit, you’ve got Western media that have actually become a part of the mechanism of genocide. That’s what’s different. That’s what’s frightening.”

The BBC and CNN denied allegations of bias.
