Why Jim Kim’s Critics are Wrong, by Gregg Gonsalves | Groundup

Our work in AIDS, Jim Kim’s work in AIDS, on TB has been about transforming the world for the better, not out of some charitable impulse, sneered at by Dr. Pritchett, but because we have a vision for what the world should look like, about what governments should and should not do for their people; about what to expect from, what we can demand in terms of delivery of public services; about our role as active citizens, not waiting for experts or politicians to come and save us. This is national development, about polity, administration, and society.
le projet de Jim Kim pour la Banque mondiale commence à se dessiner :

IPS – Birth Control – Roping in Pakistan’s Men | Inter Press Service

“People confuse vasectomy with castration (surgical removal of the testicles) and that scares them away,” Sudhayao, who works for the government’s population welfare department, tells IPS.
Vasectomy involves a minor procedure to snip the sperm ducts. Sudhayao himself resorted to the method when he decided that his family was complete. “We had two daughters and wished for a son, and the third time, my wife delivered twin boys.”
But Khosa accepted vasectomy only after begetting 22 children from two wives. “In between pregnancies, my wives were miscarrying and they were getting weaker – I was scared of losing them.”
Khosa waited three years, to make sure that the procedure had not impaired his sexual functioning, before recommending it to friends and relatives. He has even referred several of his fellow clerics to Sudhayao.

A new report by the Oakland Institute, Lives on Hold, exposes the consequences of Iowa-based AgriSol Energy LLC’s plans to lease more than 800,000 acres in Tanzania. The project initiated in 2007-2008 has moved forward without public debate or consent, and will evict more than 160,000 long-term residents of Katumba and Mishamo, who remain in the dark over compensation and relocation plans. The AgriSol land deal is a part of Kilimo Kwanza, or Agriculture First, the Tanzanian government’s scheme to promote agricultural development through public-private partnerships.
In June 2011, the Oakland Institute revealed how Iowa-based Bruce Rastetter, CEO of AgriSol Energy, leveraged the involvement of Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to provide legitimacy to this deal. Initially masquerading the project as responsible agricultural investment, the university completely withdrew any support or association with it in February 2012 under growing public pressure. While AgriSol claims to have halted operations in Katumba and Mishamo until the refugees have been relocated, Lives on Hold depicts how the relocation is to be accomplished.

#Haiti : Funding Dries Up Even as Rains Worsen #Cholera Deaths - IPS

A decrease in funding for the fight against cholera, lack of funding for the ministry of health, challenges with coordination and the failure to adequately address the underlying causes of the disease’s spread have meant that Haiti is now enduring one of the world’s worst epidemics in decades.
Calais Draws More Refugees, And Trouble - IPS ipsnews.net
►http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=107157
In the last few weeks there has been a noticeable escalation in the frequency and intensity of these activities. Last Thursday police evicted 35 migrants from the dilapidated prefab buildings in the avenue Blériot known as Africa House, under the supervision of the sub-prefect of the Calais region Alain Gérard.
The following night police raided the food distribution centre where some of the evicted migrants had camped, destroying their tents and confiscating their belongings.
Since then there have been two more evictions from various squats and camps around the city. The authorities have also increased their checks and controls along the truck depots beyond the city near Dunkerque, where a shifting population of some 400-odd migrants en route to the UK have attempted to stay in order to escape the police harassment in the city.
Few people expect them to stop coming to a city that has become a symbol of Europe’s ruthless and dysfunctional response to 21st century migration. And with a president determined to mobilise anti- immigrant sentiment to stay in power, and the Pas-de-Calais region offering training facilities to Olympic athletes for the London games, the city’s migrants are clearly even more unwanted and superfluous than usual, and repression is the order of the day.

#Côte_d'Ivoire: Toxic Waste Victims Wait Years for Compensation - IPS ipsnews.net
►http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=105004
According to a United Nations report published in 2009, toxic waste from a tanker chartered by the international commodities trading firm Trafigura Beheer BV affected more than 100,000 people, who sought medical attention for a range of health problems. The incident has been linked to the deaths of 15 people.
Since 2007, Trafigura has paid 260 million dollars in several payouts, but much of the money remains unaccounted for and thousands of victims still have not received any economic compensation that would, if paid, be equal in some cases to a year’s worth of wages.
